AB Majlis podcast: e& accelerates AI push with 900 projects as telco economics shift rapidly

e& is advancing its artificial intelligence strategy with more than 900 AI-related projects underway, as the technology company positions itself for growth beyond traditional telecommunications.
Speaking on the sidelines of the World Government Summit in Dubai, as part of a special series by AB Majlis, e& Group CEO Hatem Dowidar outlined how AI is reshaping the company's operations.
'AI now is different because AI has moved from being something that only a data scientist or a specialist can work with to something that is touching everybody's work, touching everybody's life every day', Dowidar said.
The company's transformation comes at a critical juncture for the industry.
e& UAE CEO Masood M. Sharif Mahmood highlighted the fundamental challenge facing traditional telcos: 'The billions that we're pouring in the infrastructure, we have to continue pouring billions. So the investments go like this, but the price that our customers are willing to pay is going like this. Two forces moving in the opposite direction.'
This pressure has catalysed e&'s evolution from a traditional telecom provider to a technology company.
The transformation is already showing results, with customer complaint volumes dropping 40 per cent and satisfaction indices rising by 20 per cent over the past three years, according to Mahmood.
The company's AI initiatives span from network operations to customer service. 'Normally now we are solving customers issues even before the customer knows there's an issue', Dowidar noted.
The push into AI aligns with the UAE's broader technology ambitions, which saw the country become the first to appoint a minister of AI in 2017.

Murena's /e/OS 3.0 Enhances Privacy and Parental Oversight

Murena has unveiled /e/OS 3.0, the latest iteration of its open-source, privacy-centric mobile operating system. This update introduces a suite of features aimed at bolstering user privacy and providing enhanced parental controls, positioning /e/OS as a compelling alternative for those seeking to minimize reliance on mainstream tech ecosystems. A notable addition is the integration of Murena Find, a search engine powered by Qwant. Operating in a default 'no tracking' mode, it ensures that user search activities remain private, aligning with /e/OS's commitment to data protection. The update also brings a speech-to-text messaging feature, allowing users to dictate messages hands-free. This functionality is particularly beneficial for users engaged in activities where manual typing is impractical. ADVERTISEMENT Addressing concerns about device loss, /e/OS 3.0 introduces a Find My Device feature that operates via SMS. This allows users to locate their devices without requiring an internet connection, enhancing the practicality of device recovery in various scenarios. Parental controls have been significantly refined in this release. Guardians can now set restrictions on app installations and screen time, with applications rated as 'PG' necessitating a security code for installation. This added layer of control aids in managing children's digital interactions more effectively. For users utilizing larger screens, the new Tablet Mode offers an optimized interface, improving navigation and multitasking capabilities. This enhancement ensures that the user experience remains consistent across different device formats. The Advanced Privacy feature has been upgraded to provide weekly reports on app tracking behaviors and an overall Privacy Score. Users can also customize geolocation access on a per-app basis, choosing to share either their actual location or a fabricated one, thereby exercising greater control over their personal data. Murena Vault, an experimental cloud storage solution powered by CryptPad, is introduced in this update. Offering end-to-end encryption, it facilitates secure file storage and real-time collaboration, underscoring Murena's dedication to user data security. Gaël Duval, founder of /e/OS and CEO of Murena, emphasized the company's ethos, stating, 'We believe that technology should serve people, not the other way around. With this new version of /e/OS, we are raising the bar even higher in our powerful proposition for a healthier, more ethical, and user-first digital life.'

India's Modi says he's received invitation for G7 summit in Canada

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he looked forward to meeting his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney during the Group of Seven summit, after the latter invited him to the gathering over a phone call on Friday. India is not a part of the grouping but can be invited as a guest to its annual gathering, which will be held this year in Kananaskis in the Canadian province of Alberta, from June 15-17. "Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister (Carney)...thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this forward to our meeting at the Summit," Modi said in a post on X. The invitation suggests that both sides want to rebuild ties, which have nosedived in the last two years after Canada accused India of involvement undefined in a Sikh separatist leader's murder, and of attempting to interfere in the country's 2019 and 2021 elections. New Delhi denied both allegations. Modi also stated in his post that India and Canada would work together "with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests". India is Canada's 10th largest trading partner and Canada is the biggest exporter of pulses, including lentils, to India. Ottawa holds the rotational G7 presidency this year.
