Homophobia in men's football caused by ‘selfishness', says France international Jonathan Clauss
Clauss, 32, has featured regularly for Lens, Marseille and Nice in Ligue 1 over the past five seasons since his move from German club Arminia Bielefeld in 2020. There has yet to be an openly gay male player in the French top-flight and Clauss attributed that to a perceived lack of empathy, causing players to 'hide'.

'If there are homosexual players, they hide,' Clauss said in an interview with L'Equipe. 'They don't dare to discuss it, because people are selfish. As long as it doesn't concern them, they don't put themselves in other people's shoes.
'But just because discrimination doesn't concern you, doesn't mean you shouldn't pay attention to it. I haven't experienced racism, but I'm still interested in saying it's not cool for the people who suffer it. Come on, we're getting involved on all subjects.'
Clauss was speaking ahead of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, which is on May 17. The defender said he had never witnessed homophobia in his own footballing environment, adding that if he had, it would have 'affected' him.
'I didn't really like it when others were treated badly because of things they can't do anything about,' Clauss said. 'On homophobia as on other subjects, I have always been on the side of those who were not very popular in the playground.'
While openly gay players in women's football are far more common, there are currently only two examples in major top-flight football around the world — Jakub Jankto of Italian side Cagliari and Josh Cavallo of Adelaide in Australia. Jake Daniels, meanwhile, became the first active openly gay footballer in English football since Justin Fashanu, when the Blackpool striker came out in 2022. There have also been several players to come out after retirement, such as former West Ham United midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger and former Leeds midfielder Robbie Rogers.
Despite the growing representation of gay, male footballers, Clauss said challenges still lie with the heteronormative climate of the men's game.
'It's very complicated to change mentalities, because, for most players, the world is 'a man with a woman', and it has to stop there.' he said. 'I think it's a never-ending fight, because there will never be 100 per cent people who agree (with the fight against homophobia). And the mere fact that there is a debate is a problem.'

The fullback, who has won 14 caps for France since his debut in 2022, urged education around homophobia to begin 'among young people, starting at school'.
'I'm sure that many people think like me but they don't dare to say it, so they just follow the stereotypes,' he added. 'Raising awareness among a professional group is almost already too late.'
Clauss said he hopes for there to be 'no impact' when future players come out as gay but felt he is unlikely to see it in his environment before he retires.
Players of Ligue 1 teams are set to wear armbands in the campaign against homophobia this weekend, the final match of the French top-flight's regular league campaign.

Jerry Jones: Parsons offer would make him highest-paid non-QB in guaranteed money
Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that he's confident Micah Parsons will be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Judging by Jerry Jones' comments Thursday, there's a good chance that's without a new contract. While joining former Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Irvin on his YouTube channel, the Cowboys owner and general manager sounded completely committed to not renegotiating what he believes was already negotiated back in March with Parsons. Jones said the offer would have made the All-Pro pass rusher the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in guaranteed money. Advertisement 'The world would know that I want Micah if they knew what I had offered him,' Jones told Irvin. 'And he knows what I offered him.' Jones and Parsons met back in March and negotiated without Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, being present. Jones said Thursday that when they sent the contract details over, 'the agent told us to stick it up our ass.' Parsons, who requested a trade Aug. 1, is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. His 2025 salary is just over $24 million. The NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in terms of average annual value is Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt at $41 million per year. Last month, he signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension with $108 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money by a non-quarterback. When Parsons posted his trade request on X, his statement said, 'I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present.' Parsons included details about the March meeting, writing that it was about leadership. 'Somehow the conversation turned into him talking contract with me,' Parsons added. 'Yes I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done.' Jones continued to explain Thursday that Parsons is under contract for this season and the Cowboys have the ability to franchise tag him the next two seasons. 'We really got three years to work this thing out,' Jones said, before explaining how he did the same thing with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who is the NFL's highest-paid player at $60 million per season. 'We couldn't agree so Dak played the last year of his contract and then we franchised him. It's exactly what happened with Dak, so we moved forward and ultimately we got a contact, made Dak the highest-paid player in the NFL. So the precedent is handling it like Dak. And judging by Jones' comments' Thursday, it doesn't sound like he will be the one making the first call. We were going to send it over to the agent, and the agent said don't bother because we have all that to negotiate. Well, I had already negotiated. I already moved off my mark in several areas. So the issue, very frankly, is we've had the negotiation in my mind. And the agent is trying to get his nose in it right now and try to come in there and improve off the mark that we had already set. 'We've got this deal resolved in my mind, for the Dallas Cowboys. We've got it done. And if the agent wants to finish up the details, which he should, and do all the paperwork, he can do that. And we're ready to go. But as far as the amount of money, the years, the guarantees, all of that, we've negotiated that.' Ex-Giants quarterback Daniel Jones wins Colts' starting QB job
NEW YORK — Daniel Jones is an NFL starter once again. Jones won the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback job over Anthony Richardson, head coach Shane Steichen announced Tuesday. 'He's our starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. 'I don't want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities.' Jones signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in March, four months after the Giants released him. The 28-year-old Jones spent the final five weeks of last season on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, and he was added to the active roster for their lone playoff game. But the Colts presented a better opportunity for Jones to compete for a starting job after Richardson's first two NFL seasons were marred by injury and inconsistency. 'I think the guys have taken to him,' Steichen said of Jones. 'He's a great communicator with the guys. You can see that veteran presence out there, so I'm excited for that.' Jones, whom the Giants drafted No. 6 overall in 2019, went 24-44-1 in his six seasons as a starter, including 2-8 last year before his release. Jones owns a career completion percentage of 64.1% and has thrown for 70 touchdowns with 47 interceptions. He is three years removed from his best NFL season, when he threw for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns and ran for 708 yards and seven scores. The Giants went 9-7-1 and earned a wild-card berth that year, and Jones led them to a win over the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. The Giants then signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract, only to release him less than halfway through. Richardson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, is 8-7 as a starter, but he has underwhelmed as a passer, completing 50.6% of his attempts and throwing 11 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. He has rushed for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. 'The operation at the line of scrimmage, the checks, the protection, the ball placement, the completion percentage, all of that played a factor,' Steichen said of the Colts' QB competition. 'Daniel did a great job doing that. I think AR has made strides in that area, but I do feel that he still needs to continue to develop in those areas.' Jones completed 17 of 32 passes for 245 yards this preseason. Richardson is 8 for 14 for 94 yards. The veteran Jones is now tasked with leading an offense that features a star running back in Jonathan Taylor, established wide receivers in Michael Pittman and Josh Downs, and a first-round rookie tight end in Tyler Warren. Jones looks to get his career back on track with the support of Steichen, who helped develop Justin Herbert as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2020 and Jalen Hurts as the Philadelphia Eagles' OC from 2021-23. The Colts are trying to improve on last year's 8-9 record and seek their first trip to the playoffs since 2020. Richardson was also benched for two games last season, with Joe Flacco replacing him. Asked if he sees a future for Richardson as the Colts' starter, Steichen said, 'That's hard to say,' but acknowledged the 23-year-old could get another opportunity if something happens to Jones. 'This league is a year-to-year league,' Steichen said. 'What do I feel is best for the Indianapolis Colts in 2025? I've got to make these decisions. That's what I get paid to do, and I've got to go with what I feel is right.'
