Automakers are going big on in-car subscriptions. Are customers buying it?

Consumers don't want to pay for it. Automakers are still pushing hard.
In-car subscriptions have become a growing obsession for many automakers which see strong revenue potential from recurring customer payments.
But it appears that initial attempts to paywall built-in hardware and software features, such as cameras, sensors or navigation perks, haven't been too successful, with few drivers willing to take on yet another monthly bill. That has brought automakers to their next challenge: convincing customers to subscribe.
An S&P Global Mobility survey this month found the number of respondents who were willing to pay for connected services in their vehicle dropped to 68 per cent this year, compared with 86 per cent in 2024.
'Subscription-based services (navigation, Wi-Fi, etc.) are increasingly being met with resistance from price-sensitive consumers who may not see the value in paying recurring fees for features they do not frequently use,' the report said.
Drivers now have a range of options to subscribe to: semi-autonomous driving, roadside assistance, in-vehicle apps, stolen vehicle assistance and access to Wi-Fi — all at different price tiers.
However, steep subscription costs on top of sticker prices of new vehicles remain one of the biggest barriers for many consumers.
To get past that, some automakers are offering temporary complementary access to connective services in hopes of gaining loyal customers.
Ford Motor Co.'s semi-autonomous driving feature costs between $650 and $900 per year after a 90-day free trial, for example. General Motors Co.'s OnStar subscription can be as high as $39.99 a month after a free trial, according to its website.
Automakers which are known for their affordable prices have also joined the race for subscription-based connected services. Kia Corp., for example, has a three-tier subscription offering for owners following a three-year free trial period, which offers services such as a charging station locator, digital key access via smartphone and roadside emergency services.
The subscription model is in its evolution phase, said Stephanie Brinley, associate director of autointelligence at S&P Global Mobility.
'We're trying to figure out what consumers are willing to pay for, how much they're willing to, (and) how they want it bundled,' she said.
Despite the initial resistance, automakers haven't given up yet. Instead, they're rolling out brand new technology and features in the hopes of enticing drivers to pay for subscriptions.
'They're pivoting to that new tech,' said Daniel Ross, senior manager of industry insights with Canadian Black Book. 'It's more on what's new and what they've never had before.'
Ross said as newer technology comes out, there will be more opportunities for automakers to release new generations of cars with updated software.
And that's one of the pitches for customers to subscribe, he added.
'If you want that type of technology that's advanced, that's the newest age, that's something you can tell your friends about, this is the way you pay for it,' Ross said.
Brinley said automakers are building a road map to help scale this in-car technology and these features to make it more affordable for consumers in the long run — all while keeping personalization at its core.
'Once you have the platform and the service developed, the margin is really high,' Brinley said.
'The fact that it's connected is not really the element that consumers get excited about,' she said.
'It's what does that connectivity do for you as an owner?'
Some customers may find value in GM's OnStar safety and security package that alerts for help during a crash, while others may subscribe to Ford's self-driving feature for a month-long road trip.
'The appeal of a feature is that it makes driving easier,' she said.
Brinley said automakers have started to talk about their revenue expectations from subscription-based services more concretely.
That 'means they're making progress,' she said.
On recent earnings calls, GM projected revenue from its hands-free feature, Super Cruise, will be more than $200 million in 2025 and is expected to more than double in 2026. Meanwhile, Ford said the number of its vehicles equipped with the hands-free driving feature, BlueCruise, have more than doubled in the last year to just under 700,000 units.
'You can see our relationship with our customers no longer ends the point of sale or financing. We're starting to build lasting relationships and creating new avenues for reoccurring growth at Ford,' CEO Jim Farley told analysts during its fourth-quarter earnings call.
Ross said automakers are banking on the trickle-down effect of the connected services subscription.
Often, features first introduced to high-end customers gradually filter their way down to mainstream customers, who are looking for affordable and budget-conscious options, he explained.

Brinley said the subscription model is still in its early stages. As it progresses, so will consumer expectations.
'If you have a car that has some of these features and then you go to buy the next car, you think that it just should be there,' Brinley said.
As consumers get more used to connectivity, their expectation of what comes with a vehicle and what they're going to pay will also evolve, she said.
'There's probably going to be a lot of flexibility over time in how people choose to consume that,' Brinley said.

TORONTO – Toronto FC is close to acquiring attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a cash deal, according to a source. The transfer is not yet finalized, according to the source granted anonymity because they are not authorized to comment on the negotiations. TFC, without a designated player since buying out the contracts of Italians Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi in early July, has been looking for some star power. And Toronto, which sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 5-13-6, needs help in attack. With 25 goals in 24 games, it ranks 26th in the league on offence. Canadian international Theo Corbeanu leads the team with five goals while Honduran Deybi Flores, a defensive-minded midfielder, tops the team with two assists. The 26-year-old Mihailovic has nine goals and seven assists in 24 regular-season outings for Colorado this season. He is making $1.775 million (all figures in U.S. dollars) with the Rapids this season, a bargain compared to the $15.4 million Toronto was paying Insigne and the $6.295 million Bernardeschi was earning. With tariffs piling up over the past few months, economists say Canada's economy is starting to show cracks — but few signs of collapse. TD Bank economist Marc Ercolao conceded it's a 'bit of surprise' to see the economy holding up against a massive disruption from Canada's largest trading partner. 'Many months ago, ourselves — as well as other economic forecasters — had an outlook for a much weaker Canadian economy. Obviously, that isn't manifesting now,' he said in an interview. On Thursday, Statistics Canada gave a glimpse at how the economy wrapped up the second quarter of the year when many of those tariffs came into full effect. While the agency sees a couple of small contractions in real gross domestic product by industry in April and May, its flash estimates show the economy rebounding somewhat in June. If those early readings pan out, StatCan said that would be good enough for flat growth overall on the quarter. Some of those results are distorted by volatility _ businesses rushing to get ahead of tariffs boosted activity in the first quarter, and that's giving way to weakness in the second quarter, for example. 'What we can say over the last six months or so is that economic activity is somewhat flatlining,' he said. Services sectors are holding up relatively well, but Ercolao said export-heavy industries such as manufacturing and transportation are bearing the brunt of the impact. In an attempt to shore up some of that weakness, the federal government has announced various programs to support tariff-affected workers and broader plans to accelerate defence and infrastructure spending. Macklem noted during his press conference Wednesday that business and consumer confidence are still low, but have improved according to the central bank's recent surveys. And while some trade-exposed sectors have faced job losses and the unemployment has generally trended upward to nearly seven per cent, employers elsewhere in the economy continue to expand their payrolls. It's certainly being restrained by the uncertainty caused by tariffs. But it is growing and we expect that to continue through the third and fourth quarters.' Last week the Bank of Canada kept its policy interest rate unchanged at 2.75 per cent in a third consecutive decision. If the central bank were panicked about the Canadian economy's ability to withstand U.S. tariffs, Ercolao argued it would likely have lowered that rate. The past week's GDP readings were good enough for BMO to raise its outlook for the third quarter into positive territory. Forecasters at the bank now expect Canada will avoid a technical recession this year. BMO chief economist Doug Porter said in a note to clients Friday that Ottawa's personal tax cut at the start of the month and robust demand for domestic travel amid the trade war will boost the economy this quarter, as will 'the less-dire sentiment' around economic forecasts. In the Bank of Canada's monetary policy report released alongside the rate decision, it outlined one scenario for the economy assuming the tariff situation remains largely status quo. Canada avoids a recession in that outcome. Growth in 2025 and 2026 remains overall positive, but half a percentage point lower than it would've been without the weight of tariffs. Macklem told reporters that the Bank of Canada would expect the economy to keep growing even with today's tariffs in place, 'but it'll be on a permanently lower path.' 'Unfortunately, the sad reality is that tariffs mean the economy is going to work less efficiently,' he said. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Porter said in his note that the actual impact of Trump's new 35 per cent tariff on Canada's economy could be less than headline figure suggests. Because of a carve-out for Canadian exports that are compliant with CUSMA, BMO sees the effective U.S. tariff rate at roughly seven per cent under the new duties, less than a percentage point higher than where it stood before Friday. But with CUSMA up for renegotiation in 2026, Porter said that 35 per cent tariff rate could loom as a 'cudgel' over negotiations — taking full effect if the trade agreement expires without a new deal in place. The Bank of Canada published a separate 'escalation' scenario this week that would see the United States remove Canada's CUSMA exemption as it ramps up global tariffs. Real GDP would drop an extra 1.25 per cent by 2027 in this more severe case; Porter said that this outcome would be 'serious for sure, but far from disastrous.' Ercolao said much of the tariff doom-and-gloom earlier in the year was tied to the speed at which those import duties would be imposed. But the on-again, off-again nature of U.S. trade restrictions to date has given businesses time to adapt to the new way of doing business and constant delays in implementation, he said. 'If we go back to when Trump began his presidency, had he went 100 per cent on his tariff plan right away, we probably would have seen a deep economic contraction just because it would have been so sudden,' Ercolao explained. 'Now we've been afforded that time to at least try to mitigate some of the negative impacts from what these tariffs were expected to do to the Canadian economy.' Why Netflix Stock Lost 13% in July

The stock still looks like a buy over the long term. 10 stocks we like better than Netflix › Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) has been one of the top-performing stocks in the market over the last few years, but that blistering growth seemed to catch up with it in July, as a strong second-quarter earnings report wasn't enough to push the stock higher. Instead, investors bailed on the stock as valuation concerns seemed to override another round of solid growth. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the streaming stock finished the month down 13%. As you can see from the chart, the stock headed lower over much of July, even as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) finished with a 2.2% gain. NFLX data by YCharts Netflix takes a step back Netflix's pullback last month showcases what happens when a stock is priced to perfection. The stock was already falling heading into the second-quarter report, even though there was no major news out on the company. When it came time for its update, Netflix delivered strong numbers. Revenue rose 16% to $11.08 billion, narrowly topping expectations at $11.04 billion. Netflix no longer reports quarterly subscriber growth, but its growth was broad-based across all four of its regions, with currency-neutral revenue growth of 15% or better in each territory. On the bottom line, its operating margin jumped from 27.2% in the quarter a year ago to 34.1%, and it reported earnings per share of $7.19, up from $4.88 in the quarter a year ago and better than the consensus at $7.06. The company also raised its guidance for the year, upping its revenue forecast from $43.5 billion-$44.5 billion to $44.8 billion-$45.8 billion and its operating margin from 29% to 29.5%. However, that was not enough to push the stock higher, as pressure from valuation and high expectations leading into the report seemed to have overcome the "beat and raise" results. Is Netflix a buy after the pullback? Netflix is now trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 50, which is expensive, even for a growth stock. However, its recent push into advertising is paying off, and its local content strategy is driving growth around the world. Its subscription model should also drive profit margins higher as its subscriber base continues to grow. In the near future, valuation pressure could push the stock lower, but over the longer term, its leadership in streaming and broader growth tailwinds should make the stock a winner.
