Shriya Pilgaonkar is making some really interesting choices as an actress. She has acted in both films and OTT and especially on the streaming platform, she has titles like The Broken News, Taaza Khabar, and Guilty Minds, which became one of the best reviewed shows of 2022.
Pilgaonkar's new web-series 'Chhal Kapat' drops on Zee5 today and is a whodunnit where the actress plays the investigative officer. In an exclusive interview, she speaks about this show, her reaction to Guilty Minds not being renewed for another season, and the evolution of content in the last few years.

Edited excerpts from the interview
How did you prepare for this role of an investigating officer?
It's interesting because Devika Rathore's character is not like the usual aggressive cop or the usual portrayal you may see, as male cops maybe portrayed. Devika is somebody who asserts her authority even through her smile, even through her silences. And for me, it was very interesting to develop a certain kind of a body language to her and also to understand her inner world because she's recently been widowed. She lost her husband in an accident recently, and she wanted to move from a larger town to a smaller place.
She wanted to change her, she she got posted there because she wanted to move away from the big city and the noise. So she is basically at a very interesting juncture in her life. So when you see her when I wanted to play her, I did not want to play her like a typical aggressive cop. So more than watching cop films or trying to copy any mannerisms, for me, it was really about working with my director and writers and creating Devika from scratch.
So do you see any similarities between Shree and Devika?
Devika's character is very instinctive, very, sharp, and she a good she has a very sharp instinctive sense about people. And I think that is something that I can say is common between Devika and I because, more often than not, I'm also very instinctive about people and situations. Of course, sometimes I've been wrong, but, mostly I think I can say that I'm quite sharp with my instincts. So that is one thing that I can say.
And since this is a whodunnit, while you were reading the script or while the script was being narrated to you, were you curious to know what's going to happen next?
That's the reason why I decided to do this because whodunit is my favourite genre. And, I've grown up watching and reading Agatha Christie, Enid Blyton, Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew, and we've grown up watching a lot of murder mysteries and investigative dramas. So the reason that I actually even wanted to do this is because I really like the format of seven episodes, 20-25 minutes each. It's a family entertainer. And the way it's written, it's very crisp, and I could see myself wanting to know more because I was hooked.

You have made some really interesting choices as an actor. I want to ask you ever since the streaming platform has seen a rise, how much do you feel we have seen content evolve or change.
It has. There's no two ways about it. And, see, evolution is a part of showbiz, and they'll constantly be learning and unlearning. And I'm very grateful that makers have trusted me with really good scripts and nuanced characters, whether it was a lawyer in Guilty Minds or Mirzapur or a sex worker in Taaza Khabar or a journalist. I feel like all these parts that I've played have been so beautifully written that I've had so much creative emotional fulfilment in my journey playing these different parts. But like I said, we also have to accept that the industry keeps going through its process.
You know, there's a phase where sometimes there's too much content that's not very good out there, and then there'll be something amazing and inspiring that comes out, and then everyone try to make that. But, eventually, content that really works is content that is authentic, which is original and not trying to be something that it's not. So I feel like actors like me are very grateful to the OTT space because of the way it paved for us to bring our skills to the table, and the hope is for for work on OTT to also bring in more film work.

You just said that there is a lot of content out there, which is not good, and we have seen multiple seasons of that show. But when it comes to Guilty Minds, as you said, it was original. It was inspiring. It was amazing. It was one of the best shows of 2022, and yet we get the heart-breaking news that it will not be renewed for season two.
I was also heartbroken. I don't have any answer to your question. I myself don't know what to say. I don't know what to say to this. I don't know what the reasons were, whether it was a business decision because it was not even a very big show. It was not even a very expensive show. So I don't know, but I also feel like what happens is sometimes shows that people claim that they don't like, are spoken so much about on social media that eventually people are curious and they go watch it and that gives the numbers. So it becomes cringe watching.

Maybe it has to do with their machinery. I guess somewhere good shows need the support of good mounting as well. And I think somewhere, even the media needs to support it. Even the audience needs to support it. Because the same audience who's asking for good content needs to also support it with numbers. I was very emotionally attached to that show, and I felt very sad to know that we wouldn't be doing a season two, and we just have to accept it and then hopefully make others other stuff now. What do I say?
How would you describe the character of Devika?
Devika as a cop is very strong, but in her personal life, she feels disrespected and she knows her husband was very insecure about her. And I think a lot of women in power may be going through the same thing where they don't they have that respect of at work, but they may not be surrounded by people who are secure and respectful to them in their personal life. So I hope when people watch it, they are inspired, especially women, to stay in their power and to stand up for themselves. That is one thing that is a very interesting layer to Devika's character

It's not about just doing this once. I think it's about creating different characters because the cop in Singham to the cop Rani Mukerji in Mardaani to Delhi Crime to Chhal Kapat, they're all different versions of people in the system.

Samar Khan says Kay Kay Menon's viral clip from 'Shaurya' was taken out of context: ‘It's like calling Gabbar Singh from Sholay a hero'

Filmmaker Samar Khan is all set to return to the spotlight with 'Chhal Kapat – The Deception', a murder mystery premiering on OTT on June 6. His 2008 release 'Shaurya' continues to remain in the spotlight after a courtroom scene featuring Kay Kay Menon went viral online. However, the video was taken out of context—something Samar has never liked to address. Nonetheless, he has now opened up about the intention behind the scene and how it went viral with a completely different interpretation. Kay Kay Menon's scene from Shaurya 00:59 Any Director Can Make Mistakes, I Choose Roles Based On Scripts: Kay Kay Menon On Picking Shekhar Home Shaurya is a courtroom drama starring Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Deepak Dobriyal, and Jaaved Jaaferi. The film made waves for its powerful themes and explosive climax. At the centre of the storm was a searing monologue delivered by Kay Kay Menon's character, Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Khan expressed his discomfort over how the essence of the film has been misrepresented online. He admitted that he had outgrown Shaurya many years ago but still feels proud of the film. 'But what people make of it is out of my control. People ask me about it on Twitter and other platforms, but I never respond. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo Anything I say would be taken out of context,' he shared. Samar about clickbait culture The clip featuring Rudra's monologue is often portrayed as a moment of righteous heroism. But for Khan, this popular interpretation completely misses the point. 'Unfortunately, many of those who share that scene haven't watched the scenes before or after. It's like isolating Gabbar Singh from Sholay and calling him a hero. Villains often come off as more attractive. Even with someone like Shah Rukh Khan , who has done countless romantic roles, people still remember him for Darr or Baazigar. As creators, we have to detach ourselves from how our work is received or reinterpreted,' he explained. He didn't hold back while discussing the role social media plays in reshaping narratives. He called it a clickbait culture driven by short attention spans. About Samar's recent production venture Chhal Kapat 'Chhal Kapat – The Deception' is directed by Ajay Bhuyan and features Shriya Pilgaonkar, Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva in key roles. Marathi Horror Series Andhar Maya Unveils Haunting Trailer Ahead Of Premiere

New Delhi: ZEE5 has unveiled the spine-chilling trailer for Andhar Maya, its first-ever Marathi horror original series, set to premiere on May 30. Set against the eerie and atmospheric backdrop of the Konkan region, the series tells a disturbing tale of a family's return to their ancestral home, only to confront horrors that transcend reason, time, and reality. Directed by National Award-winner Bhimrao Mude and produced by Sharmishtha Raut and Tejas Desai under Ericon Telefilms, Andhar Maya stars the acclaimed Kishor Kadam in a mysterious role that promises to be one of his most emotionally complex performances to date. The series has been penned by Pralhad Kudtarkar (story and dialogues) and Kapil Bhopatkar (screenplay), and promises a deeply immersive horror experience. The story follows the Khatu family as they return to their ancestral wada in Konkan for a final ritual. However, what begins as a traditional homecoming quickly descends into a psychological and supernatural nightmare. As time loops and family members begin to vanish, the house itself seems to awaken with a sinister will—reclaiming its own in terrifying fashion. The narrative blurs the lines between memory and myth, reality and illusion, emotion and dread. V.R. Hema, Chief Channel Officer - Zee Marathi and Business Head - ZEE5 Marathi, remarked on the significance of the series: 'This is just the beginning. With Andhar Maya, ZEE proudly launches its first-ever Marathi Original Horror Series on ZEE5. We are all set to explore the world of OTT with a bold new voice. But pioneering has always been part of our DNA. From launching Maharashtra's first private GEC with Zee Marathi, to revolutionizing cinema with Zee Talkies and Zee Studios, we've consistently shaped the landscape of Marathi entertainment. Now, we carry that legacy forward into the digital age—rooted in our culture, stories, and people. Set against the mystic backdrop of Konkan, Andhar Maya is a gripping blend of folklore, familial bonds, and psychological suspense. It represents our deep commitment to investing in local storytelling and creative talent. We believe this is the start of a powerful new chapter—one that brings the dreams and voices of Maharashtra to every screen, everywhere' Producers Sharmishtha Raut and Tejas Desai added, 'Andhar Maya is a project that's extremely close to our heart. It's a compelling story that blends emotion, suspense, and raw human truth. As producers, it's fulfilling to see a Marathi series take such a significant step like being streamed on a global platform like ZEE5. This milestone not only marks a new beginning for Marathi content on digital platforms but also reinforces our commitment to showcase meaningful, high-quality stories. I'm excited for audiences to experience the world of Andhar Maya.' Director Bhimrao Mude said, "With Andhar Maya, my vision was to craft a world that feels deeply rooted yet disturbingly unfamiliar—a space where emotions, memories, and the supernatural coexist. Launching the trailer feels like opening the first door to that world, and I couldn't be more thrilled to finally share it. This story is as much about the ghosts of the past as it is about the fears we carry within us. The Konkan region, with all its texture and mystique, gave us the perfect canvas to build something visually rich and emotionally layered. I hope viewers find themselves intrigued, moved, and thoroughly spooked—because this is just the beginning of what the show has to offer.' Lead actor Kishor Kadam described his role as deeply moving and psychologically intense: "Playing Gonya in Andhar Maya has been one of the most hauntingly beautiful journeys of my career. He's a man of few words but carries centuries of silence and secrets within him. The trailer offers just a glimpse into the world we've built—but trust me, the real chills begin when the story unfolds. It's not just emotionally rich, it's deeply unsettling, keeping you on edge every second. Working with Bhimrao Mude and such an honest, passionate team made it even more special. This isn't your typical horror—it lingers, it whispers, and it stays with you. I'm genuinely excited to see how audiences respond once they step inside this world with us.' Andhar Maya premieres May 30 exclusively on ZEE5, promising a gripping blend of folklore, psychological tension, and emotional resonance. Step into the shadows—some stories are meant to be heard in whispers.

Shaurya Director Samar Khan On Viral Kay Kay Menon Clip: 'Like Calling Gabbar A Hero'

Last Updated: Shaurya director Samar Khan says the viral scene featuring Kay Kay Menon is misunderstood and compares it to calling Gabbar Singh from Sholay a hero. Filmmaker Samar Khan, known for acclaimed web series like The Test Case and Avrodh, is returning with a brand-new murder mystery, Chhal Kapat – The Deception, set to premiere on ZEE5 on June 6. But while he readies for this gripping new chapter, the shadow of his most iconic work as a director—Shaurya (2008)—continues to follow him in the digital age. Shaurya, a courtroom drama starring Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Deepak Dobriyal, and Jaaved Jaaferi, was India's response to A Few Good Men. Much like Jack Nicholson's unforgettable 'You can't handle the truth" moment, Shaurya featured a fiery monologue by Kay Kay Menon's Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh in the climax. But while the scene was meant to expose unchecked authority, social media has since spun it into something else entirely—celebrating Rudra as a misunderstood hero. In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, Khan addressed how the film's meaning has been distorted online. 'I have outgrown Shaurya many years ago," he said. 'I'm still proud of the film, but what people make of it is out of my control. People ask me about it on Twitter and other platforms, but I never respond. Anything I say would be taken out of context." He admitted that the viral resurgence of Rudra's monologue troubles him, not because it's being talked about—but because it's being misunderstood. 'Unfortunately, many of those who share that scene haven't watched the scenes before or after. It's like isolating Gabbar Singh from Sholay and calling him a hero. Villains often come off as more attractive. Even with someone like Shah Rukh Khan, who's done countless romantic roles, people still remember him for Darr or Baazigar. As creators, we have to detach ourselves from how our work is received or reinterpreted," he explained. Khan also weighed in on social media's role in amplifying out-of-context moments. 'It's all about clickbait and short attention spans now. That's how people engage—quick clips, loud monologues, and controversy." As Shaurya continues to provoke debate years after its release, Khan is focused on his next project. Chhal Kapat – The Deception is a murder mystery led by Shriya Pilgaonkar and directed by Ajay Bhuyan. The series also stars Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva. With Chhal Kapat, Khan steps into darker, twistier territory—this time hoping that the audience sticks around for the full story, not just a viral slice. First Published:
