Samar Khan says Kay Kay Menon's viral clip from 'Shaurya' was taken out of context: ‘It's like calling Gabbar Singh from Sholay a hero'
Samar Khan
is all set to return to the spotlight with 'Chhal Kapat – The Deception', a murder mystery premiering on OTT on June 6. His 2008 release 'Shaurya' continues to remain in the spotlight after a courtroom scene featuring
Kay Kay Menon
went viral online.
However, the video was taken out of context—something Samar has never liked to address. Nonetheless, he has now opened up about the intention behind the scene and how it went viral with a completely different interpretation.

Shaurya is a courtroom drama starring Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Deepak Dobriyal, and Jaaved Jaaferi. The film made waves for its powerful themes and explosive climax.
At the centre of the storm was a searing monologue delivered by Kay Kay Menon's character, Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Khan expressed his discomfort over how the essence of the film has been misrepresented online. He admitted that he had outgrown Shaurya many years ago but still feels proud of the film. 'But what people make of it is out of my control. People ask me about it on Twitter and other platforms, but I never respond.

Anything I say would be taken out of context,' he shared.
Samar about clickbait culture
The clip featuring Rudra's monologue is often portrayed as a moment of righteous heroism. But for Khan, this popular interpretation completely misses the point. 'Unfortunately, many of those who share that scene haven't watched the scenes before or after. It's like isolating
Gabbar Singh
from Sholay and calling him a hero. Villains often come off as more attractive. Even with someone like
Shah Rukh Khan
, who has done countless romantic roles, people still remember him for Darr or Baazigar.
As creators, we have to detach ourselves from how our work is received or reinterpreted,' he explained.
He didn't hold back while discussing the role social media plays in reshaping narratives. He called it a clickbait culture driven by short attention spans.
About Samar's recent production venture Chhal Kapat
'Chhal Kapat – The Deception' is directed by Ajay Bhuyan and features Shriya Pilgaonkar, Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva in key roles.

Your Type by Tanya George: When signs become sounding boards
Weird things happen when you make words work across scripts. The letter W gets its name from the French double vé (pronounced doo-bluh-vay), which translates to 'double v', which is exactly what it looks like. Now try and match that sound in Marathi. It requires some more letterforms and some matras that don't connect well if you don't have a good font. These connections used to be easier to write and paint. But these days, even hand-painters are influenced by digital font templates. This is more likely to crop up in North Indian languages, as in the Hussunally and Company sign in Hindi and Bangla, where the shirorekha does not connect. The letters were carved into wood separately and then arranged on site. Rocky Malaviya and Hanif Kureshi's homage to the I Heart NY sign is clever and deeply-rooted. In this Hindi and Bangla sign, the shirorekha doesn't connect because the letters were carved separately. Similar issues crop up when using a letterpress. Though I have a soft spot for sweet signs like the one for plumber where the ma and the ba don't connect. One intriguing side-effect when languages intersect is transliteration (replicating the sounds of one language into another, rather than the meaning), especially when English words are rendered in Devanagari. Hindi or Marathi words that end in a consonant ending are naturally pronounced without the short, neutral, and relaxed 'uh' sound. So, the halant (that trailing foot at the end of the script) just creates clutter. But in Odia, the halant at the end of House makes perfect sense. It actually captures the accent of the speaker, and does a good job of communicating. Here the Odia and Hindi spellings for 'Guest' capture the speaker's accent. The signs that grate on me the most? Ironically, ones that proclaim love. Across the country, neighbourhoods have been setting up public signs declaring: I Heart [insert location]. As someone who's lived in Kalina, I've grown fond of many things. But the I Heart Kalina installation rings hollow. In Kolkata, the Municipal Corporation has installed 'I Love [Ward No.]' signs across all 120 wards. Do they promote genuine affection, or contribute to visual and light pollution? The cheap Indian imitations of Glaser's I Heart NY sign are neither genuine nor attractive. The trend sprung in 2016, when Rocky Malaviya and Hanif Kureshi designed a sign proclaiming love for Mumbai. Theirs was a homage to Milton Glaser's 1976 I Heart NY sign. And they tweaked the Marathi La (in Love) to form a heart shape above the English text and also form the M in Mumbai. It feels tender, clever, deeply rooted. Glaser has said that his design was meant to be 'a declaration of love carved into a tree trunk'. It was sincere, grounded, and purposeful, while also being commissioned by the New York State Department of Commerce. By contrast, these cheap Indian imitations feel more like declarations of love one spots defacing monuments. Performative rather than heartfelt. From HT Brunch, August 23, 2025 Follow us on

Anita Advani says Rajesh Khanna's family abandoned him yet inherited his entire property while she got nothing: 'You can't escape Karma'
Anita Advani, who recently revealed that she was secretly married to India's first superstar Rajesh Khanna and lived together for nearly 12 years, has revealed new details about his final years, his family's absence, and the property battle that continues to this day. 'Everyone had left him' When asked why his family did not support him despite having such a 'beautiful family' — two actress daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, son-in-law Akshay Kumar , and wife Dimple Kapadia — Anita said on REEL Meet REAL, 'She (Dimple) had left him in 1982, and for 30 years, she had no connection with him. He had already lost everything by then; everyone had left him. He was stuck in between. He wasn't even getting a divorce, so he remained trapped. No divorce, no resolution.' Family inherited property, not her Despite years of togetherness, Anita said she was left with nothing. 'The discussion did take place but in the end, when he was not even conscious, everything was done in such a way that it went completely out of control — beyond anyone's reach, including his own. Yet, the family got his entire property. That in itself is a big story.' She added that she has been locked in legal battles ever since, with the case still ongoing in the High Court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'Recently, I even received a statement from the Supreme Court. Anita Advani claims right over Rajesh Khanna's bungalow 'No one takes anything with them' Reflecting on greed and betrayal, Anita said, 'No one takes anything with them when they go. So why cheat like this? No one can eat or carry so much money after death. Then why such greed? Every relationship deserves respect. In my heart, I know — everyone should get what they rightfully deserve. Karma comes around on its own. No matter how smart you think you are, you can't escape karma.' Bond with Anju Mahendru The conversation also touched upon Rajesh Khanna's past relationships, particularly with actress Anju Mahendru, who was in his life before his marriage to Dimple. Clarifying her equation with Anju, Anita said, 'Anju is a very good friend of mine. I often visit her; we've known each other for years now. She never asked for anything. She told me herself she didn't want anything. She is a wonderful human being, like a sister to me. ' On whether injustice was done to Anju too, Anita responded, 'She herself said she didn't want to marry him. The truth is, he was a very difficult man. A difficult person, no doubt about it. Ask any woman who was in his life, and she will say the same. That's why Anju ultimately decided not to marry him.'
