Farmland left idle and dormant is creating an unhealthy dust problem in California.
Over 1 million acres of fallow farmland are contributing to the growing dust, which has health and climate implications in the state's Central Valley.
What's happening?
According to the University of California, Merced, approximately 77% of fallowed land in California is connected to 88% of the human-caused dust events.
UC Merced professors studied this phenomenon and published their findings in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
The issue is especially prevalent in Fresno, Kern, and King counties, where corn, wheat, and cotton fields are routinely fallowed. Here, unplanted farm fields are susceptible to wind erosion, resulting in dust that is often contaminated with chemicals and pathogens.
This effect is linked to human respiratory diseases and even death. Certain fungal diseases spread through dust and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
The particulate matter may contribute to everything from cardiovascular issues to dementia, as well as traffic fatalities due to reduced visibility on roads.
California's Central Valley is a significant source of dust, as it is a major agricultural production region in the U.S.
Researchers are studying the impacts of dust on local snowmelt and water resources.
"Because our study points to fallowed or idled farmlands as a dominant contributor, that may change how we estimate overall dust impact," said one of the researchers, Adeyemi Adebiyi.

Why is farmland dust significant?
Unfarmed lands have been expanding in recent years due to limited water resources and economic decisions. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act has also limited the amount of water that farmers can use annually.
When these lands remain exposed and uncultivated, they produce more dust, which impacts the environment and surrounding communities. Increased dust activity is affecting the health of people and natural ecosystems.
More dust in our atmosphere creates ripple effects and hinders plant growth. Overmining, overgrazing, and extended agricultural breaks are creating conditions where degrading land is fueling our changing climate and threatening the global food supply.
What's being done to control harmful dust?
In the study, the UC Merced researchers recommended that farmers plant cover crops and ground cover plants to reduce dust and improve soil health. They also suggested land transitions to use fallowed farmlands for habitats and renewable energy.
To mitigate public health risks and regional climate change associated with precipitation and snowmelt, agricultural practices in the Central Valley must shift.
Fortunately, there are many natural solutions to address air pollution issues, like the increase in dust.
Some communities have explored organic and water-based dust suppressants containing biodegradable surfactants to address dust issues.
Preventing the spread of dust may also involve reducing vehicle exhaust fumes, maintaining proactive air quality monitoring, and promoting sustainable land use.

A Dark Mirror Universe May Be Hiding Right Next Door, Scientists Say

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: We have not been able to detect dark matter yet, even though there are many aspects of the universe that suggest the existence of invisible matter. In one new theory, it is possible that dark matter exists in a mirror universe where there are only dark versions of forces that hold the universe together. Another new theory suggests that dark matter may have been created at the edge of the universe right after the Big Bang, then radiated into space as the universe expanded. Hypothetically, dark matter is supposed to exist, even though it has managed to elude every single detection attempt so far. It neither absorbs nor reflects light. Still, something has to be generating enough gravity to hold together immense galaxies that rotate so fast, they would otherwise end up annihilating themselves. We keep searching for it—but we might be searching in the wrong universe. There might be more exotic explanations for invisible matter that is supposedly right in front of us. Physicist Stefano Profumo of the University of California, Santa Cruz, suggests it could have come from one of two origins. It might be lurking in a dark mirror universe contained within the visible universe. The merging of dark matter black holes in that realm may cause gravitational waves which can be detected. If this is starting to sound like one of the multiple mirrorverses in Stephen King's The Dark Tower, think of it as a shadow version of the same rogue chasing the same man in black through space and time. 'The nature of dark matter remains one of the most pressing mysteries in modern cosmology and particle physics,' Profumo said in a study recently published in Physical Review D. 'While numerous candidates have been proposed, from weakly interacting massive particles to axions, the search for the fundamental nature of the dark matter and of the 'dark sector' it resides in continues.' Alternately, dark matter particles might have formed at the edge of the observable universe, or the cosmic horizon, as it expanded at breakneck speed right after the Big Bang. Profumo thinks these particles might still be radiated into space similarly to how Hawking radiation describes particles evaporating from right outside the event horizon of a black hole. The cosmic horizon is something like the universe's equivalent to a black hole's event horizon. Though Profumo admits both of his theories are highly speculative, they are not impossible. He was inspired by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which explains how the strong force of gravity binds together the quarks and gluons which make up protons and neutrons. The dark mirror universe he envisions has its own versions of particles and forces that operate just like those in the universe we exist in. Dark quarks (which create protons) and gluons (which glue quarks together into protons) should be able to bind and create baryons such as protons and neutrons, which are the dark reflection of the baryons we can detect. Black holes (or at least objects that behave much like them) could have formed from dark baryons in the nascent universe. While there have been theories about primordial black holes forming as dark matter, researchers have seen them as the product of density fluctuations rather than emerging from a mirror universe. If clouds of dark baryons became dense and massive enough, they would have collapsed into themselves and formed nano-black hole. Enough of these black holes can contain all the dark matter in existence. With such a behemoth amount of gravity, they would also have a profound effect on the shape of the universe. Another possibility that Profumo explores is dark matter particles radiating from the cosmic horizon. The universe is already thought to have fast-forwarded through a period of inflation after its birth, and he argues that in the beginning, because it expanded faster than the speed of light, dark matter particles were released from its edges. While inflation has slowed down dramatically since then, the universe and the very fabric of spacetime are still expanding, which can be seen by the increasing distance between objects that are not gravitationally bound. That means dark matter should keep radiating for as long as expansion continues. 'The underlying mechanism leading to the production of the cosmological dark matter (DM) is at present an open question and a matter of ongoing, intense scrutiny,' Profumo said in a second study also published in Physical Review D. If a mirror universe controlled by the dark side of physics really does exist, is there a portal into it? Maybe the answer to that question will see the light someday. Meta AI takes first step to superintelligence — and Zuckerberg will no longer release the most powerful systems to the public

Researchers at Meta claim to have observed the company's artificial intelligence (AI) systems improving themselves without human input. "Over the last few months we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a policy paper published July 30 on the company's website. "The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable." Zuckerberg added that self-improving AI is the first step towards achieving artificial superintelligence (ASI) — an artificial intelligence that is capable of surpassing the cognitive abilities of humans. Broadly speaking, AI researchers consider AI's capabilities in three strata. While current AI models can achieve extraordinary superhuman feats, like predicting protein structures, these capabilities are extremely narrow. In such cases, the system can only outpace humans in one specific area but lacks general intelligence for this capability to apply across different disciplines. The next tier is called artificial general intelligence (AGI), and refers to models that can understand, learn and adapt in much the same way as the human brain. ASI is the final state that Zuckerberg referenced in the blog post, and concerns models that have evolved to far exceed human potential — and could improve themselves at an exponential rate, leading to an "intelligence explosion." Scientists refer to the hypothetical moment that we achieve AGI as the technological singularity. Related: AI is entering an 'unprecedented regime.' Should we stop it — and can we — before it destroys us? Zuckerberg's reference to catching sight of AI self-improvement is not the first time this phenomenon has been spotted. In October 2024, researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara published a paper to the preprint arXiv database centered on the notion of self-improvement. In it, they defined, created and tested an AI framework based on the idea of a Gödel Machine — a theoretical device capable of improving itself by rewriting its own code and instructions. Importantly, the machine would only implement a change if it could produce a formal proof that the change would be beneficial. Almost all models are not typically empowered to rewrite their own code. The Gödel Agent could not only access its entire codebase but also the code used to develop improvements, while showing that those improvements were beneficial. The AI consistently showed better performance in key areas than the human-designed agents to which it was compared, according to the said that ASI could represent a transformative step in humanity's technological progress, and that it could lead to the "discovery of new things that aren't imaginable today." "I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose," Zuckerberg wrote. "As profound as the abundance produced by AI may one day be, an even more meaningful impact on our lives will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, be a better friend to those you care about, and grow to become the person you aspire to be."

Should You Take a Vitamin B12 Supplement?

Everyone needs vitamin B12: It helps the body produce red blood cells and maintain healthy brain function, along with so many other things. But are you getting enough of it? Here's what to know about vitamin B12 and whether you should consider upping your levels. A boon for brain health 'Vitamin B12 is important for brain health because it helps protect nerve cells in the brain, which support memory and thinking skills,' says Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian and certified diabetes educator in New York. It's water-soluble, so the body does not store it in large amounts, and daily intake is essential. The current federal recommendations are for adults to get 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 per day. Great food sources of B12 include seafood like oysters, salmon and tuna, beef, and fortified products like nutritional yeast, plant-based milks, some breads and breakfast cereals, says Routhenstein. But some recent research suggests that some people may need even more than that. Vitamin B12 deficiencies can impact your brain function even when your intake levels are considered normal, says Dr. Ari J. Green, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco's department of ophthalmology. In a recent study, Green and his colleagues found that people with B12 levels that were technically normal but on the lower end of the range had impaired brain function. 'We could detect neurological impairment at levels currently considered 'normal,' independently of other factors like years of education," particularly in older people, says Dr. Alexandra Beaudry-Richard, a resident at McGill University and co-author of the study. 'To us, this should reinvigorate a conversation about how much B12 is needed for optimal neurological function.' Read More: Should You Take a Vitamin D Supplement? Other studies have found that people with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment tend to have lower B12 levels—and supplementation with B12 can reduce the rate of brain atrophy. However, on the opposite end, the study showed signs of a possible detrimental effect on the brain when people had high B12 levels in their blood. 'This warrants further studies to evaluate what healthy B12 levels are on both ends of the spectrum,' says Dr. Ahmed Abdelhak, one of the study's authors and a clinical instructor in neurology at UCSF School of Medicine. Should you take a B12 supplement? You can (and should) get B12 from your diet, but some people may have a tough time getting adequate levels of the nutrient from food alone. Older adults are more likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiencies because the vitamin requires stomach acid to be absorbed, and stomach acid production starts to decline with age. Routhenstein recommends people look closer into their B12 status starting around age 50 or if they are at higher risk of a B12 deficiency. This category includes vegans and vegetarians, people taking specific medications that interfere with B12 absorption such as metformin or proton pump inhibitors, and those who have gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn's, celiac, or atrophic gastritis. You can get tested for a vitamin B12 deficiency at your annual physical. If you are deficient, your doctor might recommend supplementation. Read More: 7 Surprising Symptoms of Lyme Disease The UCSF study authors recommend checking levels starting at age 70, but you can get it checked on a standard blood test at any age through your primary care physician. Dr. Ralph Green, a professor of pathology and lab medicine at the University of California, Davis—and another author on that recent study—says that checking B12 may also be valuable for people who have unexplained symptoms that have been linked to B12 deficiency. For those with declining gastric function, he says taking supplements is likely the best way to promote absorption, and the level of supplementation a person should consume depends on whether their absorption is normal or not. Pregnant women, too, need higher B12 intake to support fetal brain development; if you're pregnant, consult with your ob-gyn about optimal B12 levels for you. What kind of B12 supplement is best? B12 in supplements and fortified foods can be more easily absorbed than from food, especially for older adults and those with absorption issues, says Routhenstein. If your doctor has advised you to take a B12 supplement, it's best to ask them to recommend specific dosages and brands. But Routhenstein recommends following these general guidelines when selecting a B12 supplement. Of course, no supplement is a cure-all, and there are other ways to support brain health, including maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Activities that stimulate multiple brain areas simultaneously are excellent at promoting cognitive longevity, Beaudry-Richard says. Practicing a musical instrument, dancing, and studying a foreign language daily, for example, all recruit 'brain circuits responsible for vision, hearing, movement, emotions' and more. 'It's like a full-body workout for the brain,' she says.
