Is AI the Key to UnitedHealth's Market Growth and Cost Control?

Globe and Mail8 hours ago

As the HMO industry navigates regulatory reforms, rising costs and public scrutiny, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated UNH is intensifying efforts to streamline operations, lower expenses and expand its market presence by targeting tech-savvy consumers. A key part of this strategy involves strengthening AI literacy and ethical training programs for its clinicians and data analysts to ensure responsible use of emerging technologies.
According to a May 2025 report from The Wall Street Journal, UNH has now deployed more than 1,000 AI-driven solutions across its insurance, clinical and pharmacy segments. These tools handle a wide range of tasks, from transcribing and summarizing clinical visits to automating claims processing and powering customer service chatbots. The company also revealed that approximately 20,000 of its engineers actively leverage AI to aid in software development.
UnitedHealth's chief digital & technology officer, Sandeep Dadlani, emphasized in a late May 2025 interview with Fortune that the company's aggressive AI investments aim to address broad structural flaws in U.S. healthcare. He noted that around 90% of claims are now auto-adjudicated, signifying a major shift from manual to AI-driven workflows, and hinted at new AI-based products rolling out later this year.
Despite these advancements, UNH faces legal challenges over its AI use. A 2023 class action lawsuit alleged misuse of an AI algorithm in claims evaluation. Although several claims were dismissed, the court allowed the case to proceed on key counts. Overall, UNH's AI strategy signals a decisive shift toward automation and digital transformation across its entire operation.

57 Albertans suffer salmonella infection following recall of bad salami

Alberta has suffered the majority of salmonella cases connected with a recall of salami. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Canadian Food Inspection Agency Alberta has suffered the majority of salmonella cases connected with a recall of salami. Fifty-seven of 72 salmonella cases are within our province. Ontario has 14 and Manitoba has one. In a release issued Tuesday, the Public Health Agency of Canada said seven cases have resulted in hospitalization. It did not specify in which province(s) the hospitalizations occurred. No one has died. The Public Health Agency of Canada previously recalled Rea brand Genoa Salami Sweet (lots 5035 226 and 5049 226), Rea brand Genoa Salami Hot (lots 5020 228 and 5035 228) and Bona brand Mild Genova Salami (lot 5035 226). It advised not to 'consume, use, sell, serve or distribute' the meat, which made its way to grocery stores and specialty markets before the food recall was issued. It also advised the meat 'may have been used in prepared products like sandwiches or sold at deli counters,' as it also made its way to restaurants, cafés, delis and butcher shops before the food recall was issued. The previous release was issued June 11. People started getting sick 'between mid-April and mid-June 2025,″ the Public Health Agency of Canada said, and 'more recent illnesses may continue to be reported.' Symptoms of salmonellosis develop six to 72 hours after eating products infected with the bacteria and can include chills, fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. Most people will recover on their own, but a serious illness may require treatment at a hospital or lead to long-lasting health effects or death. An outbreak investigation is ongoing. B.C. economy will get a kick out of hosting FIFA World Cup games, government says

Workers clear the turf at B.C. Place during a FIFA World Cup 2026 update in Vancouver, Tuesday, April 30, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns There is less than a year to go before Vancouver is on the global stage hosting seven FIFA World Cup soccer games, and leaders are promoting the economic benefits of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the international showcase. A joint statement from B.C. Tourism Minister Spencer Chandra Herbert and Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says one million additional out-of-province visitors are expected between 2026 and 2031, generating more than $1 billion in spending. The statement says more than 18,000 jobs could be generated in that same period. It says FIFA predicts that preparing for and hosting the tournament could contribute $1.7 billion in economic benefits for B.C., including a $980-million increase in gross domestic product and $610 million in 'labour income.' Sim says the city's direct costs of hosting seven games 'remain on track' after the budget ballooned in 2024. Last year, organizers announced the estimated cost of hosting the event more than doubled to between $483 million and $581 million, including costs for the city, the province and stadium upgrades. The province estimates the net core provincial cost of hosting remains similar to earlier predictions, in the range of $85 million to $145 million. Royce Chwin, president of Destination Vancouver, says in the statement that hosting the games will have lasting benefits. 'FIFA World Cup 26 is more than a series of matches. It's a catalyst for economic activity, international visibility, and community pride. Hosting seven games will energize our downtown core, including hotels, restaurants, venues, and surrounding neighbourhoods,' he said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 24, 2025.
