Dubai joins South Africa, Europe to launch global AI hub
Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), through the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DCAI), has partnered with the South African Artificial Intelligence Association (SAAIA) to help launch a dedicated AI trade & investment hub.
The hub aims to fast track cross-border collaboration and unlocking new avenues for AI startups and investors across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
There are various regional partners behind the initiative, including from Europe. DCAI, established by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and overseen by DFF, is the Middle East launch partner. By addressing barriers around market access and capital, the hub will serve as a catalyst for trade, innovation exchange, and responsible AI development in high-potential, emerging markets.
Saeed Al Falasi, Director of the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, said: 'AI is redrawing the map of global opportunity, and cross-continental collaboration is key to navigating it. This partnership is designed to help ideas, talent, and capital flow freely across borders. By connecting dynamic and fast-growing ecosystems, we're supporting startups in emerging markets and shaping a more inclusive future in AI. As a global crossroads of trade, capital, and talent, Dubai is a place where bold ideas can take root and be exported to the world.'
Dr Nick Bradshaw, Founder and Chairman of SAAIA, said: 'AI investment is growing rapidly across Europe and the Middle East, but Africa's innovation landscape is underrepresented—despite being home to some of the most dynamic startups in the world. Our partnership with the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence and other partners is a strategic step to help close that gap by giving African startups greater access to global capital, markets, and networks.'
Recent success stories such as the $628 million acquisition of Tunisian AI startup InstaDeep highlight Africa's untapped AI potential. The new hub will matchmake startups and investors, support business expansion, and amplify the voices of emerging AI ecosystems.

Dubai Aims for 30K Gaming Jobs in $200B Global Market
Dubai has flicked the switch on its developing gaming industry as it targets 30,000 new jobs and a $1bn GDP boost from the sector by 2033. The Dubai Programme for Gaming 2033 'DPG33' has announced that Dubai is home to more than 350 gaming companies, with 260 of them categorised as specialised game developers, contributing overall to a global industry valued at $200bn globally. Since the programme's launch in November 2023, more than 60 new companies have been established in Dubai of which 12 per cent are large global companies — marking a growth rate of 16.6 percent since the launch of the programme. The gaming industry has emerged as one of Dubai's most promising economic sectors in recent years. Chad Suspends U.S. Visas After Trump Revives Travel Ban on 12 Countries
Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Déby announced on Thursday that his government will suspend the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens. The decision comes a day after U.S. President Donald Trump reintroduced a travel ban targeting 12 countries, including Chad, citing national security concerns. President Trump's policy—which echoes a controversial hallmark of his first term—targets countries he claims have 'deficient' screening and vetting procedures or have historically failed to repatriate their citizens who overstay U.S. visas. The list includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Additional travel restrictions will be imposed on visitors from seven other nations. Chad's President, in a strongly worded statement posted on Facebook, declared the suspension of U.S. visa processing in Chad, framing it as an issue of national dignity and sovereignty. 'Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give—but Chad has his dignity and pride,' Déby wrote, making a pointed reference to a $400 million luxury aircraft gifted by Qatar to his administration. The announcement has added to a wave of criticism from African nations affected by the ban. In the Republic of Congo, government spokesperson Thierry Moungalla called the U.S. decision a 'mistake,' attributing it to a misunderstanding involving an armed attack in the United States. He asserted that Congo is neither a terrorist hub nor associated with any extremist activities, and expects diplomatic clarification soon. Sierra Leone, which faces heightened travel restrictions rather than a full ban, also responded diplomatically. Information Minister Chernor Bah affirmed the country's commitment to working with U.S. authorities to address concerns and ensure progress on bilateral relations. The renewed travel ban is expected to take effect Monday at 12:01 a.m. Washington time. Analysts predict this move will further strain U.S. relations with several African and Middle Eastern nations, especially as they voice concerns about fairness, transparency, and the implications for diplomacy and migration.

Hedera Africa Hackathon Launches with $1M Prize Pool to Accelerate Africa's Digital Future
The Hashgraph Association, a Swiss non-profit organisation driving global adoption of Hedera-powered solutions by funding innovation, training, certification, and venture building programs, in collaboration with Exponential Science Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation accelerating responsible tech adoption, via research, education, and innovation activities, today announces the launch of the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 to enable the next generation of Web developers and empower economic inclusion in Africa with a digital future for all. This biggest Web3 Hackathon initiative combines online participation with onsite events in over 20 African cities, with a goal of attracting over 10,000 participants across more than 15 countries on the African continent. Developers, students, and entrepreneurs are invited to collaborate to build decentralized solutions on Hedera across industries such as Finance, Healthcare, Telecoms, Sustainability, Agriculture, and Manufacturing, while leveraging the convergence of other deep technologies such as AI, IoT, Robotics, and Quantum Computing, with a prize pool of more than $1 million on offer for the winning teams and projects. With global participation officially open from August 1 to September 30, 2025, the hackathon tasks applicants to develop blockchain/distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based, scalable solutions tailored to the continent's most urgent challenges and needs.
