5 electrocuted as Janmashtami chariot touches live wire in city
Four others suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
According to Uppal police, the incident took place around 12 am when the devotees — most of them from the local Yadav Sangham — joined the procession to pull Lord Krishna's chariot amid light rainfall. This is a two-decade-old custom organised by the community a day after the festival. Cops said just about 20 metres away from the culmination point, the chariot touched a cable wire hanging loose from a 11 kv high-tension powerline.
Nine people, holding the metal body of the chariot, suffered severe shocks. Five of them died on the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Krishna Yadav (23) a resident of Old Ramanthapur, Rajender Reddy (48) and Rudra Vikas (39) from Hubsiguda, and Srikanth Reddy (35) and Suresh Yadav (34) from Ramanthapur. Four others — Srinivasulu, Ganesh, Ravi, and Mahesh — are being treated for burns. Their condition is said to be stable.
Following protests by the Yadav community members and a complaint from the families of the deceased, Uppal police filed a case under Section 194 (suspicious death) of the BNSS. Alleging negligence, locals also demanded action against officials of the electricity department.
"The procession started around 10.30 pm on Sunday from the Yadav Sangham building. The chariot was to go around the area for two hours before returning to the same spot.
There were close to 500 people when the yatra started," said Krishna Kumar, a resident of Old Ramanthapur, who participated in the event. According to him, the victims started to manually push the chariot as the jeep that was hired for the job ran out of diesel.
"Since this happened only a few metres away from the Sangham building, the devotees volunteered to detach the chariot from the jeep and manually drag it holding the bar of the chariot," he told TOI.
Eyewitnesses said the victims almost immediately fell to the ground unconscious after the chariot touched the live wire. While there were some more people, including the priest, on the chariot, they escaped unhurt.
"The locals tried to administer CPR to the victims, but to no avail. They shifted the injured to a nearby hospital," said S Chakrapani, ACP, Uppal division.

NEW DELHI: Cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill that seeks to ban "online money game", where users pay a fee or deposit money, proposing a maximum three years in jail or fine of up to Rs 1 crore for those involved in offering, encouraging or inducing players to participate, which also extends to banks facilitating these transactions. A regulator body is planned to oversee the functioning of the sector, sources told TOI. The proposed legislation defines "online money game" as an online game played by a user by paying fees, depositing money or other stakes in expectation of winning. 2 years' jail, ₹50L fine likely for those advertising online games Online social games have been defined as those that don't involve exchange of money, although users may be allowed to pay a subscription or one-time access fee. Govt has proposed the new law considering unregulated online money gaming platforms pose threats to national and economic security as they use digital wallets and cryptocurrencies for money laundering and illicit money transfer, cross-border data flows without compliance of data protection law, sources said. Moreover, offshore entities are seen to be circumventing tax and legal obligations. The suspects looted valuables worth at least ₹6 crores in the heist, as per the firm officials. ACP (crime) Mukesh Kumar said that at least eight to 10 more suspects are still at large. 'Five armed suspects impersonating auditors entered the branch at 5.20pm on Saturday and looted gold ornaments weighing 8.54 kilograms worth several crores and ₹8.56 lakh in cash. Some also stood guard outside the branch,' he said. They prepared fake identity cards and had the ribbons attached to them, identical to those used by Manappuram employees, the police added and said even the branch manager, Shree Krishna and two other employees failed to identify the suspects. ACP said that one of the suspects had directed Krishna to count cash and close the branch for audit. 'When Krishna and his junior went to deposit the cash and the gold packets to the vault, three of the suspects followed them inside,' he said, adding that their other associates overpowered the guards standing outside. They said the suspects then looted gold ornaments kept in packets and cash and fled after locking the three employees inside the vault and breaking at the CCTV cameras. Krishna said there was gold worth ₹13 crore in the vault when the five armed suspects impersonating auditors barged inside the branch at 6pm on Saturday. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were travelling in a Bolero but it broke down before reaching the branch, following which one of them drove it back and others reached the spot in an auto rickshaw. The trio will be produced before a court on Wednesday and taken to police remand for further interrogation, police said, adding that investigation to nab other suspects is underway.
