I'm interested in writing about power: 'Succession' creator Jesse Armstrong on new film 'Mountainhead'

Hindustan Times2 days ago

New Delhi, "Succession" creator Jesse Armstrong says his film "Mountainhead", much like his critically-acclaimed HBO show about media mogul Logan Roy, is an exploration of power and how a group of people control the quality and quantity of information that goes out in the world.
In his directorial debut, currently streaming on JioHotstar, the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winner Armstrong once again trains his lens on the ultra rich.
In the movie, four tech billionaires come together for a weekend retreat as a global crisis unfolds thanks to the deep-fake videos of a social media app owned by one of them. The real world filters through videos and images on their screens, but they are more concerned about their net worth and how the crisis can help multiply it.
Asked why he is so focused on exploring the lives of the rich in his stories, Armstrong said it may be because he thinks a lot about "income distribution and how very unbalanced it is".
"A writer doesn't always know why they choose the subjects they do or why they're drawn to certain areas. Maybe I'm more angry than I know , but I think I'm writing about power," Armstrong responded to a question posed by PTI during an international media roundtable.
"In 'Succession', he said, it was the power of Logan Roy's family and their control over the media.
"In this story , it's not that they're rich guys although it's important that they are rich guys and are constantly ranking themselves and thinking about their wealth but it's their power that's the centre of the story. It's their ability to change how most of the people in the world receive information and the quality and quantity of information that they're receiving."
In "Mountainhead", the eldest of the group is Randall , he is also the group's leader. Jeff is the founder of an AI tech company that's on the upswing thanks to crisis created by Venis' social media app and Hugo is the owner of the mountain top villa whose name is a play on Ayn Rand's novel "Fountainhead".
For much of the movie's duration, they remain in the mansion. And when they go out, they write their net worths on their chests during a hike in what seems to be among the many absurd rituals the four have for their poker weekend.
Armstrong, 54, said he did not want his first movie to be "too expensive", which is why he thought of the story "much like a chamber piece" where everyone is locked in a house.
"I like that feeling of pressure cooker... But I also knew that we are on TV and most TV now is big screens in people's homes. So, I needed some sense of scope and to let some air in. I normally don't do this, but it was kind of back engineered like why do these guys go out? Maybe they have a ritual during their poker weekends where they do this ranking."
Armstrong, also known for "Downhill", "Peep Show", and "In the Loop", said he did not have any particular actors in mind while writing the movie, but he knew that "Office" star Carell would be brilliant as Randall.
On a question about what went through his mind when he saw tech CEOs at president Donald Trump's inauguration and Elon Musk's involvement with DOGE, Armstrong said "it didn't feel good as a human being watching that stuff".
"...but it did feel like, 'Yeah, this was the bubble of time that I was trying to write about and how I thought it feels in the world'... You get these weird coincidences of real stuff in the real world. And it feels spooky when it's very close.
"...The tech billionaires in my film are actually outside government, so it wasn't like DOGE was part of the film, but certainly that interconnectedness between political power and tech power at the moment did feel like 'Okay, the film is still writing about this world, which is happening in front of our face'."
Armstrong said during his research, he started listening to podcasts of "some of these tech world figures talking to each other" and was struck by their tone.
"Sometimes you could feel the level of confidence tipping into a certain haughty arrogance. And that is a very rich vein for a comedy writer to hit. So I think it was that tone of voice, which I was attracted to."

Remakes are a new canvas for me, will do them all my life: Aamir Khan

Mumbai, He believes in remakes and will make them all his life, says Aamir Khan, whose last film 'Laal Singh Chaddha' was an official adaptation of 'Forrest Gump' and latest 'Sitaare Zameen Par' has been trolled for being a remake of Spanish movie 'Campeones'. The star and filmmaker said he has done over 10 remakes and they have all been superhits except for "Laal Singh Chaddha". "Like, 'Ghajini' or if I've to start from the beginning of my career then 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', which is a remake of Romeo and Juliet. So, I have never had a problem till date in remaking because for me, it is a new canvas," Aamir said in a group interview in response to a question from PTI. "I believe in remakes and I will do it all my life. Whenever I get a good remake, I will do it. Why shouldn't I do it? If you don't want to see it, then don't see it. It's your choice. My choice is to do it, your choice is to watch it," he added. Why is Shakespeare respected so much even today, Aamir asked about the playwright whose work has been endlessly adapted in cinema, theatre and other art forms. "He is gone, write your own play. Why are you doing 'Hamlet' again? Why do you want to say, 'To be or not to be'? The chatter about remakes, I don't know where it came from... Now suddenly, some trolls have launched it. 'Some of our biggest hits have been remakes. If a cut and paste is so easy to do, then you do it, it's just a cut and paste. But it's not a cut and paste thing, you've to put your life into it," he added. Aamir said he's not the only one doing remakes. Many in Hindi cinema, including the great screenwriting duo of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, have adapted stories in their career. "I've seen this beautiful film, which is made in Spanish. Are you going to watch a Spanish film? I don't think you have ever seen a Spanish film in India, you must have seen one or two. But by and large, we don't watch it,' he said. What is needed is sensitisation for all. Spanish audiences liked "Campeones" and understood its message about neurodivergence, which refers to differences in mental or neurological functioning from what is typically considered the norm. And that is something he wants to achieve with "Sitaare Zameen Par", the film he has produced and acted in. "We should also be sensitised. We should also move forward, and that the topic of neurodivergence should become important for us too. In our country too, there should be a public discourse on it what is neurotypical and how we should behave? This is a very important topic for India. I'm very clear I have done the right thing." "Sitaare Zameen Par", directed by R. S. Prasanna, features Aamir as Gulshan, an assistant coach of major basketball team. After being fired from his job, he is ordered to either go to jail or do 90 days of community service as the coach of a team of specially-abled basketball players. The movie, which releases June 20, comes three years after "Laal Singh Chaddha" that tanked at the box office when it was released in theatres in August 2022. At the time, the movie faced calls for boycott on social media with hashtags #boycottlaalsinghchaddha and #boycottbollywood garnering tens of thousands of posts on X. "You work so hard, and then a person is saying something wrong just because of negativity. He has neither seen the film nor does he know about the topic, you just have to be negative. So, whatever you say, that person will speak negatively. So that is the meaning of trolling. Troll is not an angel. We don't call them angels. We call them trolls," he said. However, the actor dismissed the notion that online trolling has an effect on a movie's box office performance. "There was a lot of trolling in 'Laal Singh Chadha'. Maybe people think that it didn't work because of trolling. They are absolutely wrong. Imagine if the same trolling was there during '3 Idiots', what do you think would have happened? Then the trolling doesn't work. Why? Because the film is good." "Laal Singh Chaddha" didn't work at the box office because it was not made well, Aamir stressed. "It couldn't touch the hearts of people. If 'Dangal' had released on the same day in place of 'Laal Singh Chaddha', it would still have been a super hit. So, trolling didn't make a difference. The film was weak so it couldn't sustain. If the film was good, it would have gone up. So, I'm not disturbed by trolling, I don't have any tension. The film should be good," he added. The actor said he has read the social media comments on 'Sitaare Zameen Par' and is able to figure where the post is coming from. "I know about the troll in a second as they write, 'Boycott, boycott' or 'Go to Pakistan', so I understood it's a troll... That reaction doesn't affect me at all. I want to listen to the real audience, who are neither a troll nor anything, they see your work and they either like it or they don't like it. If they like or dislike it, they say it from their heart. So, I'm bothered by the reactions of the real audience for whom I make films. I don't care about the reaction of the trolls."

Consecration of ‘Raja Ram', other deities held at Ram Temple in Ayodhya

The consecration of 'Raja Ram'— Lord Rama in his royal form— along with the installation of idols in eight newly built temples inside the Ram Janmabhoomi complex was held on Thursday (June 5, 2025) in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The ritual was the second major consecration ceremony at the temple, the first being that of Ram Lalla on January 22, 2024, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremony took place during the 'Abhijit Muhurat', considered one of the most auspicious moments in the Hindu calendar. The consecration of the deities began with prayers at the 'yajna mandap' at 6:30 a.m., followed by a 'havan' at 9 a.m., which lasted an hour. Thereafter, centralised rituals began simultaneously across all temple shrines, aided by visual technology like cameras and large screens, ensuring synchronicity of the ceremonies. According to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, among the deities consecrated were Shri Ram Darbar (central installation), Sheshavatar, Lord Shiva in the northeast (Ishan) corner, Lord Ganesha in the southeast (Agni) corner, Lord Hanuman at the southern wing, Surya (Sun God) in the southwest (Nairitya) corner, Goddess Bhagwati in the northwest (Vayavya) corner and Goddess Annapurna in the northern wing. Mr. Adityanath offered prayers at the Ram Temple, had darshan of the 'Ram Darbar' on the first floor, and visited Hanumangarhi temple nearby. 'Today, in the holy birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, Ayodhya Dham, we are getting the great fortune of becoming a witness to the programme organised for the Pran-Pratishtha of the holy idols of gods in the eight temples including Shri Ram Darbar on the first floor of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple,' he posted on X. He added, 'This auspicious occasion is a new expression of 'Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat'. Victory to Siyavar Shri Ramachandra!' The BJP, which is in power at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, took to X and posted: 'The second festival of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha concluded today in Ayodhya. A step towards Ram Rajya'. Ram Temple trustee Anil Mishra told PTI that the ceremonies were performed in accordance with Vedic traditions, with the participation of learned Brahmins from across the country. 'The day of Ganga Dussehra will symbolise a new beginning. It will be the moment when the fruits of centuries of penance, struggle, and faith will manifest in tangible form,' he said. Ahead of the ceremony which took place on the occasion of Ganga Dusshera, Mahant Raghuvar Sharan, the chief priest of Rasik Niwas Temple in Ayodhya, told PTI, 'This year, Ganga Dussehra will not only be sacred but also historic, as after a long struggle of 500 years, Lord Ram, known as 'Rajarama', will be ceremonially installed on the first floor of the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya.' Explaining the significance of the date, Ayodhya-based astrologer Pandit Kalki Ram said, 'Any auspicious deed performed on Ganga Dussehra yields manifold results. Perhaps this is why the Ram Temple Trust chose this day for the consecration of Rajarama.' Pilgrims in large numbers flocked the temple complex, celebrating what many described as a 'landmark moment' in the city's and nation's spiritual history. — Yogi Adityanath (@myogiadityanath) June 5, 2025 The inauguration of the temple in January 2024 had marked the culmination of a decades-long campaign, mostly under the Hindutva banner, to reclaim a disputed religious site in Ayodhya. The occasion came just months before the Lok Sabha elections and 34 years after BJP veteran L.K. Advani's iconic 'Mandir Wahin Banayenge ' speech during his Rath yatra that shaped Ram mandir politics. Scrapping of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, building a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) have been BJP's poll plank for decades. A temple-mosque dispute had simmered over the spot where the 16th century Babri mosque once stood in Ayodhya. Many Hindus believe that the mosque was constructed after the demolition of a temple that existed on the site of Lord Ram's birthplace. Kar sewaks demolished it on December 6, 1992 triggering communal riots that left hundreds dead. After a long legal battle, the Supreme Court in 2019 ruled in favour of the construction of the temple. It also ordered allotment of a five-acre plot for building a mosque.
