Dallas police honor 2 officers killed in the line of duty this year

DALLAS - The Dallas Police Department added two new names to its police memorial in honor of the two officers who died in the line of duty over the past year.
Officer Darron Burks
Rookie Officer Darron Burks was shot while sitting in his squad car in Oak Cliff on Aug. 29, 20024.
The suspect, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, walked up to Burks' car while recording him with his phone. Police say Cobb-Bey then pulled out a gun and "executed" Burks.
Cobb-Bey then shot two and injured other officers who responded to the shooting. He was fatally shot by several officers after police said he pointed a gun at them.

Officer Gabriel Bixby was killed on Jan. 7, 2025 in a crash on his motorcycle on the way to work.
According to state troopers, he was on State Highway 276 in Hunt County and collided with the driver of a Honda Accord that turned in front of him.
The 29-year-old officer had been with the department for nearly seven years and left behind a wife and children.
Fallen Officers Remembered
The two officers were remembered on Tuesday as their names were added to the Dallas Police Memorial.
They are the 94th and 95th Dallas police officers to die in the line of duty.
"Officer Burks embodied the best of what Dallas has to offer," said Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. "Officer Bixby served our city for seven years with honor and distinction. He was a loving husband and father."
Sherie Jeffery, Officer Burks' mother, called Tuesday's service very meaningful.
"That let me know they really care about their officers," she said.
Jeffery said her son wanted to be a police officer to help others. After teaching high school math for 19 years, he quit his job to join the force.
"I often asked him. Do you know what you are doing? He said, 'I know exactly what I'm doing. This is what I want to do. This is what I chose to do.' I am so proud of him," his mother said.
While this was Jeffery's first memorial service, other fallen officers' family members have been attending for decades.
"My former husband, his name was Richard Lawrence, and he was killed in '93," said Frances Lawrence. "As long as I live here, that's what I will do."
The police department said the hope is that when family members gather again next May, there will be no new names to add to the roll of honor.

Man killed, woman seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Fresno County, CHP says
One person was killed Thursday morning, another seriously injured in a Fresno County crash. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Buttonwillow and American avenues, near Reedley, in the CHP Kings River Resident Port area. A 64-year-old woman from Reedley was driving a Toyota Prius northbound on American when she entered the intersection to make a left turn onto southbound Buttonwillow. A 28-year-old man from Exeter was driving a Honda Accord westbound on Buttonwillow, which has no traffic controls at the intersection. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the Toyota entered the intersection in front of the Honda. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the Honda braked and steered left, but the front of the Toyota collided with the front of the Honda, causing major damage to both vehicles. Both vehicles came to rest on the northwest side of the intersection. The driver of the Honda Accord was pronounced dead. Officers determined the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, Salas said. The investigation is ongoing.

What we know On Thursday, Chief Comeaux touted the results of his first big initiative as chief. Operation Justice Trail was built on the groundwork laid by former Chief Eddie Garcia's violent crime reduction plan. "The goal was to identify and locate all felons who were walking around on the streets of Dallas," Comeaux said. Several submerged cars found in Dallas park pond
The Brief Dallas police said they found several submerged vehicles in a pond at Lake Cliff Park. Four cars were pulled from the water on Thursday. Recovering all the cars could take several days. There's no word yet on why the cars were in the water. DALLAS - Law enforcement officials are investigating after reportedly pulling several cars out of the water at Lake Cliff Park in Dallas. What we know There was a large police and crime scene presence at the park near Baylock Drive and Sabine Street on Thursday afternoon. Images from SKY 4 showed divers searching the park pond. An older, blackened car that appeared as though it had been submerged was sitting near a wrecker near the water. The area was roped off by crime scene tape, and a mobile crime scene unit was parked nearby. "The Dallas Police Department's Underwater Recovery Team is in the process of recovering several vehicles submerged in Lake Cliff. Currently, divers have identified multiple vehicles and recovered 2 as of 3 p.m. on June 5, 2025. This is expected to be a multi-day operation. These vehicles are believed to be connected to ongoing investigations," said Officer Luis Mata, a public information officer for the Dallas Police Department. A later release from the department said four cars had been recovered as of 5 p.m. They say the operation will continue on Friday. What we don't know Dallas police haven't yet released any details about their operation or why the vehicles were submerged.
