Dallas police honor 2 officers killed in the line of duty this year
The Brief
Sadly, two names were added to the Dallas Police Memorial this year.
Officer Darron Burks was shot execution style while sitting in his squad car on Aug. 29, 20024.
Officer Gabriel Bixby died on Jan. 7, 2025 in a crash on his motorcycle on the way to work.
DALLAS - The Dallas Police Department added two new names to its police memorial in honor of the two officers who died in the line of duty over the past year.
Officer Darron Burks
Rookie Officer Darron Burks was shot while sitting in his squad car in Oak Cliff on Aug. 29, 20024.
The suspect, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, walked up to Burks' car while recording him with his phone. Police say Cobb-Bey then pulled out a gun and "executed" Burks.
Cobb-Bey then shot two and injured other officers who responded to the shooting. He was fatally shot by several officers after police said he pointed a gun at them.
Officer Gabriel Bixby
Officer Gabriel Bixby
Officer Gabriel Bixby was killed on Jan. 7, 2025 in a crash on his motorcycle on the way to work.
According to state troopers, he was on State Highway 276 in Hunt County and collided with the driver of a Honda Accord that turned in front of him.
The 29-year-old officer had been with the department for nearly seven years and left behind a wife and children.
Fallen Officers Remembered
The two officers were remembered on Tuesday as their names were added to the Dallas Police Memorial.
They are the 94th and 95th Dallas police officers to die in the line of duty.
"Officer Burks embodied the best of what Dallas has to offer," said Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. "Officer Bixby served our city for seven years with honor and distinction. He was a loving husband and father."
Sherie Jeffery, Officer Burks' mother, called Tuesday's service very meaningful.
"That let me know they really care about their officers," she said.
Jeffery said her son wanted to be a police officer to help others. After teaching high school math for 19 years, he quit his job to join the force.
"I often asked him. Do you know what you are doing? He said, 'I know exactly what I'm doing. This is what I want to do. This is what I chose to do.' I am so proud of him," his mother said.
While this was Jeffery's first memorial service, other fallen officers' family members have been attending for decades.
"My former husband, his name was Richard Lawrence, and he was killed in '93," said Frances Lawrence. "As long as I live here, that's what I will do."
The police department said the hope is that when family members gather again next May, there will be no new names to add to the roll of honor.

Man killed, woman seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Fresno County, CHP says
One person was killed Thursday morning, another seriously injured in a Fresno County crash. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Buttonwillow and American avenues, near Reedley, in the CHP Kings River Resident Port area. A 64-year-old woman from Reedley was driving a Toyota Prius northbound on American when she entered the intersection to make a left turn onto southbound Buttonwillow. A 28-year-old man from Exeter was driving a Honda Accord westbound on Buttonwillow, which has no traffic controls at the intersection. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the Toyota entered the intersection in front of the Honda. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the Honda braked and steered left, but the front of the Toyota collided with the front of the Honda, causing major damage to both vehicles. Both vehicles came to rest on the northwest side of the intersection. The driver of the Honda Accord was pronounced dead. Officers determined the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, Salas said. The investigation is ongoing.

Nearly 100 repeat violent felons arrested in Dallas
The Brief Nearly 100 repeat violent felons were arrested in Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux's first major operation, "Operation Justice Trail." The month-long operation cleared 163 warrants and targeted individuals responsible for over 700 past crimes, including capital murder and aggravated assault. Some suspects identified by the operation are still at large, and the initiative will continue through the summer. DALLAS - Nearly 100 repeat violent felons were taken off the streets of Dallas in new Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux's first major operation since joining the department five weeks ago. What we know On Thursday, Chief Comeaux touted the results of his first big initiative as chief. Operation Justice Trail was built on the groundwork laid by former Chief Eddie Garcia's violent crime reduction plan. "The goal was to identify and locate all felons who were walking around on the streets of Dallas," Comeaux said. Officers used a combination of the city's camera system and old-fashioned good police work to make the arrests. By the numbers Over the month of May, law enforcement officers cleared 163 warrants and arrested 98 violent felons. LINK: Full list of names, mugshots and charges for those arrested Chief Comeaux said that in total, the suspects are responsible for 700 past crimes such as capital murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, sexual offenses, and a range of narcotics and weapons violations. Three of the people arrested currently have Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds. What they're saying "When I came in, it was like we have to do this. We must do it. We're going to do it right now," Comeaux said. "We got the team together and said, 'Who do we need to get off the streets first?' We started putting the list together and going down the list." "Our message is clear. We're putting violent felons on notice. If you're wanted, turn yourself in," said Assistant Chief Catrina Shead, who led the operation. Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot said he knows some of the felons could bond out of jail. He vowed to do what he could to keep them behind bars. "At the end of the day, the court sets the bond and decides what to do if there's a bond violation," DA Creuzot said. "There's a new law coming on board, subject to a constitutional amendment vote, that will help us get refocused on that to the judges, and it will also give the judges more guidelines to set more appropriate bonds. And we'll have the right to appeal and some other things." What we don't know Some suspects identified by Operation Justice Trail are still wanted. The chief could not provide a number for how many are still out there but said the operation will continue into the summer months. What you can do Anyone with information about a wanted felon is asked to call the Dallas Police Department or use the iWatch Dallas app to submit a tip. Anonymous tips are also welcome through Crime Stoppers.
