ISLAMABAD: Pakistan remains tight-lipped on a wave of drone attacks in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with a suspected quadcopter strike injuring 22 civilians, including seven minors, during a volleyball match in Azam Warsak, South Waziristan, on Tuesday night.
The attack, echoing a deadly May 19 strike in North Waziristan that killed four children, has sparked fury over the govt's silence and lack of accountability in the volatile tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.
The latest assault, security locals said, occurred around 8 pm local time, targeting civilians aged 13 to 60. A 13-year-old boy and an adult male were critically injured and transferred to tertiary care, with seven others severely wounded.
'We were playing volleyball when the explosion hit, followed by gunfire. It was pure panic,' said a resident, requesting anonymity.
The North Waziristan attack in Hurmuz village on May 19 had led to an eight-day sit-in at Mir Ali town. Locals accused authorities of targeting civilians under counter-terrorism pretexts. The military's media affairs wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), denied involvement, blaming the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but offered no clarity.

Tuesday's strike follows a pattern of unclaimed attacks. In March 2025, 11 civilians, including women and children, died in Mardan in an attack that locals said was delivered by drones, though authorities claimed it targeted militants.
In Sept 2024, a drone strike in Upper South Waziristan killed one and injured three, with no official response. Historically, US drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas, peaking between 2004 and 2018, drew fierce condemnation for civilian casualties.
Pakistan's protests against US operations, including diplomatic complaints to the UN, contrasted with its own use of armed quadcopters against alleged TTP militants in tribal districts and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since 2020, often without acknowledging civilian tolls.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has demanded independent probes, citing violations of due process in both foreign and domestic strikes.
Islamabad's silence on the latest attack fuels distrust. Pakistan attributes tribal violence to groups like TTP, as in the ISPR's North Waziristan response, but its failure to address quadcopter incidents — whether by state forces or militants — deepens local resentment. 'If drones keep targeting Waziristan, how do we answer our people,' an elder asked during the Mir Ali protests, a sentiment amplified after Tuesday's attack.
Civilians, particularly children, bear the brunt of conflict in a region scarred by militancy and military operations.

Waqf board has right to auction agri land on lease, says HC

Bhopal/Jabalpur: A division bench of the MP high court said that the waqf board has the right to auction agricultural waqf land on lease while dismissing a petition challenging the auction process of agricultural land by the waqf board. The petition, filed by Amirt Azad Ansari and other litigants, challenged the auction of lease rights on agricultural waqf land by the waqf board. They argued that the auction notice was signed by the CEO of the waqf board, but the incumbent CEO is not a regular CEO, only an acting CEO, and she is not entitled to put the lease rights of the land on auction. Additionally, according to the circular of the religious trust and endowment department, the auction can only be conducted by the Mutvalli. The bench of Justice Vivek Agarwal and Justice Vivek Jain, however, held that Dr Farzana Ghazal, a professor of Urdu at Hamidia College in Bhopal, was appointed the CEO of the waqf board after delegating her services to the minority welfare department. The word 'Asthayi' (temporary) used in her appointment order has a context; it means she is appointed to the post for three years of her deputation and not that she is an acting CEO, as the petitioners sought to interpret. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo She is a Muslim and also a gazetted officer equivalent to the post of deputy secretary. Hockey Canada sexual assault trial update: Carter Hart breaks silence, claims the woman 'willingly participated" in the sexual activity

Carter Hart testified that the complainant willingly participated in the sexual activity (Nicole Osborne/The Canadian Press) The ongoing sexual assault trial involving five former members of Canada's 2018 World Junior Hockey team took a pivotal turn this week as NHL goalie Carter Hart took the witness stand. Hart is the first among the accused to testify in the high-profile case that has rocked the Canadian hockey world and drawn national attention since allegations emerged over an incident during a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ontario. Group sexual assault case involving Hockey Canada players continues amid controversy and courtroom disruptions — CityNewsVAN (@CityNewsVAN) Carter Hart told the Ontario Superior Court that the woman at the center of the case — identified only as E.M. due to a publication ban — "willingly participated" in the sexual activity that occurred in a hotel room following the June 2018 event. He claimed E.M. never objected or expressed discomfort during the encounter. "She willingly participated in the sexual activities... and did not express any objections," Hart stated under oath. Hart's legal team took a direct aim at the credibility of prosecution witness Brett Howden, an NHL player with the Vegas Golden Knights. Howden, who testified remotely, was cross-examined regarding inconsistencies in his memory of the night. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Hart's lawyer, Megan Savard, suggested Howden's recollection could be impaired due to a prior head injury, raising doubts about the reliability of his testimony. Trial plagued by procedural issues and jury dismissal This trial, which began after a previous one was derailed by a mistrial, has already seen significant disruption. Earlier this month, the jury was dismissed when jurors expressed concern over feeling mocked by defense lawyers — a rare occurrence in Canadian courtrooms. A prior mistrial had already occurred due to allegations of inappropriate contact between a juror and a defense attorney. As a result, the proceedings are now moving forward without a jury. While Michael McLeod, another of the accused, will not be testifying, it remains unclear whether Cal Foote, Dillon Dubé, or Alex Formenton will take the stand. All five former players have pleaded not guilty to the charges. McLeod faces an additional charge of being a party to the offense. All five accused remain on leave from the NHL and are not currently under contract.

TN launches SimpleGov to fast-track certificates, NOCs

Chennai: Want to start a hotel, open a hostel, or just get a passport as a govt employee? You no longer have to run across departments. The Tamil Nadu govt has launched SimpleGov — a digitised, self-declaration-based system to issue key certificates and NOCs in a day, skipping months of red tape. The initial rollout covers ten services — including sanitation certificates, public building licences, registration for old age homes, hostels for working women and women's homes, solvency certificates, white category industries list, NOCs for converting wetlands to non-agricultural use, good conduct certificates, and NOCs for govt staff applying for passports. The services were launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin, and the govt plans to add 150 services to this soon. Until now, several of these services required physical documents, in-person inspections, and long processing times — often stretching from several weeks to more than a year. With SimpleGov, most services will be delivered within a day, using digital KYC, QR codes, automated workflows, and self-declaration forms. PWC Davidar, advisor, SimpleGov, said one of the most important reforms was NOCs for govt employees applying for passports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services - Google Cloud: Future of Infrastructure CIO | Google Cloud, AMD Undo "The Secretariat clears about 500 passport NOCs for officials every week, the highest being from the school education department. We've now amended procedures so officials just need to upload a prior intimation letter on the IFHRMS portal. They can proceed with their passport applications without a formal NOC," he said. Getting sanitation certificates — a key requirement for businesses such as hotels and resorts — has also been made simpler. "Earlier, paperwork for these certificates crossed at least 30 tables without any value addition and took a month. Now, applicants can upload a self-declaration on cleanliness, working toilets, and no mosquito breeding on the e-governance portal. They will get an automated certificate immediately. But there will be provisions for public health officials to inspect at any time," Davidar said. Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) director M Govinda Rao said that SimpleGov services have been integrated into both departmental portals and the TNeGA platform. "It's being improved regularly," he said. A high-level committee will monitor the rollout.
