German woman due in court after mass stabbing in Hamburg
A German woman accused of a mass stabbing attack at a train station in Hamburg was to appear before a judge Saturday, while the number of victims wounded rose to 18, police said.
The suspect, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene of the attack Friday at Hamburg's main station, which stunned the city in the middle of the evening rush hour.
Hamburg police spokesman Florian Abbenseth said there was no evidence of a "political motive", and the woman may have been "experiencing a psychological emergency".
She was arrested without resistance after the attack, which emergency services said had left at least four victims with life-threatening injuries.
The toll from the stabbing spree -- the latest in a series of violent attacks to stun Germany -- has now risen to 18 wounded, from an initial figure of 12 and then 17, police said.
The suspect "remains in custody and is due to appear before a judge on Saturday," they said in a statement.
The suspect is thought to have "acted alone", police said in a post on X.

The attack was reported by German media to have taken place just after 6:00 pm (1600 GMT) Friday on one of the platforms in front of a standing train.
The suspect was thought to have turned "against passengers" at the station, a spokeswoman for the Hanover federal police directorate, which also covers Hamburg, told AFP.
Some of the victims in the attack were treated onboard waiting trains in the station, German daily Bild reported.
Images of the scene showed access to the platforms at one end of the station blocked off by police and people being loaded into waiting ambulances.
Forensic police could also be seen walking up and down the platforms where the attack took place.
German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said four platforms at the station had been closed while investigations were ongoing, adding that it was "deeply shocked" by the incident.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed his shock in a call with the mayor of Hamburg.
"My thoughts are with the victims and their families," Merz said, according to a readout from his spokesman Stefan Kornelius.
Germany has been rocked in recent months by a series of violent attacks with often jihadist or far-right extremist motivations that have put security at the top of the agenda.
The most recent, on Sunday, saw four people injured in a stabbing at a bar in the city of Bielefeld.
The investigation into that attack has been handed over to federal prosecutors after the Syrian suspect told the police officers who arrested him that he had jihadist beliefs.
The question of security -- and the immigrant origin of some of the attackers -- was a major topic during Germany's recent election campaign.
The February vote saw Merz's conservative CDU/CSU top the vote as well as a record score of more than 20 percent for the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany.

Katie Tangey, 27, died inside a family member's house in Truganina in the city's west in January. Police believe two men, filmed at the scene, targeted the wrong address but were motivated by Melbourne's ongoing illicit tobacco wars. On Thursday, police searched a house in the southeast suburb of Dandenong, did not make any arrests, but seized phones. 'We are absolutely determined to provide what closure and justice we can to the family of Katie Tangey,' arson squad Detective Inspector Chris Murray said. Police were 'getting closer' to solving the case, Inspector Murray said. 'I know Katie's family would want nothing more than to see her live out the whole life she had ahead of her, but the least we can do is make sure those responsible for this tragedy are held accountable for their actions. 'Investigators know Katie Tangey was completely innocent and had nothing to do with the illicit tobacco trade.' In April, police set up a booth in the Truganina street where Ms Tangey died in the hope of gathering information from the public. A digital composite of one of the arsonists' faces was then also released. 'Via anonymous reports to Crime Stoppers, police were provided information, including a particular call where a name has been given of a pseudonym or nickname,' police say in Thursday's statement. 'Investigators are still urging this particular caller to make further contact and provide additional information.' Ms Tangey was house sitting her brother's home on Dover St on January 16 when two men attacked the property in the early hours with a jerry can. The men were filmed leaving the scene in a dark-coloured BMW X3 or X5. Ms Tangey called triple-0 from inside the three-storey home. She could not escape and died at the scene. A golden retriever named Sunny also died. In the hours after the incident, Inspector Murray was adamant Ms Tangey was the victim of a bungled attack, where the men targeted the wrong home. Appealing for information in April, Inspector Murray called the arsonists 'low lives'. 'There are people out there who are talking and who are providing information,' he said at the time.

Court hears of 'bad blood' between alleged Oaks Estate shooter and victim
Prosecutors in the trial of a man allegedly involved in a shooting at Oaks Estate last year say the victim still has shotgun pellets lodged in his body. The victim and a woman had been walking on George Street in Oaks Estate at the time of the shooting, the court heard, after the victim's brother's house one street over was raided by police and they were asked to leave. It is alleged the pair saw an orange or gold coloured hatchback with no number plates drive past, which then did a U-Turn and stopped. In a recorded interview with police — played to the court — the woman told officers then-20-year-old Bronson Cross got out of the car with a shotgun and approached them saying: "Do you want to get shot?" The woman said she hid behind a tree while the victim talked to Mr Cross, telling him there were police nearby. Mr Cross allegedly shot the victim, who then ran down the road to seek help. "I didn't think he'd been shot because he ran," the woman told police. She said she also ran, fearing Mr Cross would fire another shot. Prosecutor Nathan Deakes told the court a man who'd been visiting his son in Oaks Estate heard a "loud bang" at about 1am that morning. When the man went outside, he was approached by the victim who told him: "Bronson Cross shot me". The court heard the victim was taken to the Queanbeyan Hospital and was later transferred to the Canberra Hospital, where he required a chest drain and surgery to remove shotgun pellets. Mr Deakes said Mr Cross and the victim knew each other from school but there had been some "bad blood" between them, including a physical altercation in the years before the shooting. Mr Cross was arrested on May 1, 2024 and extradited to the ACT accused of firearms offences and inflicting grievous bodily harm. Police released a CCTV image and photographs of the car which they allege Mr Cross was driving — later identified as a Nissan Micra. The prosecution alleged Mr Cross has been linked to the vehicle, with the identification of the offender the primary issue in the case. The trial continues.

Merrylands home shot at in suspected underworld attack

A house has been shot up and a getaway car set on fire, in a suspected underworld linked attack in Sydney's west this morning. Gunmen opened fire on the home on Earl St in Merrylands about 9.15am on Thursday morning, fire several shots into the home before fleeing the scene in a Porsche. That car was found alight in nearby Beverley Crescent in Chester Hills a short time later. Three men are in custody, after being arrested at Yagoona, about 10am. It is unclear if the arrest is related to the shooting. The Daily Telegraph understands police are investigating if the home targetted is linked to the Alameddine organised crime network.
