The Rosman-gravity pulling Pearly-Thinaah
KUALA LUMPUR: Rosman Razak appears to be the compass that will decide the direction of national women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah.
That is how former international Datuk Rashid Sidek sees it. Pearly-Thinaah could leave BAM and turn professional if they don't sign a contract extension with the national body.
Rosman is Pearly-Thinaah's coach, and as long as he is with them, the world No 3 pair will follow him.
So if national women's doubles coach Rosman remains with BAM, they are expected to continue staying there too.
Rashid feels that since Pearly-Thinaah have shown much improvement under Rosman, it's unlikely they pack up and leave their coach to turn professional.
Rosman, who formed the Pearly-Thinaah combination in 2019, made a return to BAM last November, and this led to Pearly-Thinaah rising to world No. 3, winning the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up at the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open.
The duo will meet with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz tomorrow in a move to resolve their contract impasse.
"Rosman is an integral part of Pearly-Thinaah's progress. They will definitely remain with BAM for as long as he is there," said Rashid.
"They have been showing good progress and I don't think Pearly and Thinaah will want to leave the ideal facilities offered by BAM.
"Furthermore, Rosman has pledged to stay until 2028, and Pearly-Thinaah need his guidance if they want to push for a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics."
Rashid also feels that Pearly-Thinaah's presence is needed at BAM to help improve the other pairs in the national team.
"Pearly-Thinaah have set the benchmark and are an inspiration to the rest of the women's doubles squad. The younger pairs need a world-class combination to look up to.
"Of course, the lure from outside is also strong, but can Pearly-Thinaah get certain perks like business class flights provided by BAM if they become independent pairs?

KUALA LUMPUR: The "contract game" played by BAM and women's pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah has gone into extra-time. Many had thought that there would finally be a deal when BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and the world No. 3 pair had a powwow at Academy Badminton Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today. But the meeting ended with Zafrul giving Pearly-Thinaah more time to decide on their future with the national team after their contracts ended six months ago. There was speculation that the duo could leave the national set-up and turn professional if their demands for better terms in their new contracts are not met by BAM. But judging from the outcome of today's meeting, Pearly-Thinaah's wishes could be granted. Tengku Zafrul said that the duo have been given a timeline until they leave for the Japan Open on July 15-20 to make a decision, which he believes would be a win-win situation for the national body and Pearly-Thinaah. "I think the signs are there that we will find a beneficial conclusion that is mutually acceptable to both (parties)," said Tengku Zafrul after meeting Pearly and Thinaah. "I think in any contract negotiation, there is always discussion. We need to value their contribution accordingly. "When we value the pair, we also need to have targets. So, if they do better, we should pay them more (reward them more). "They need some security and they need some recognition of their contribution and to me, we need to support that. I'm also very open towards having a performance-driven compensation, or in this case, package. "We value their contribution and they, too, value our support, but the timeline is final so that they can focus on the upcoming tournaments, especially the Japan and China Opens as well as the World Championships (Aug 25-31). "The three of us had a very frank discussion, in a very cordial fashion. It was a positive discussion and the most important thing is that both players continue their success." The two-week timeline before the Japan Open was possibly to redraft the contracts as it almost looks like Pearly-Thinaah will get improved deals until 2028, a pertinent matter which may have forced the duo to delay their official commitment as a BAM pair. Tengku Zafrul refused to delve into the six-month delay by Pearly-Thinaah in agreeing to BAM's initial offer. "We also want to move on without digging into the past as we have almost concluded our discussion, with one or two more things to be fine-tuned," added Tengku Zafrul. "Whatever in the past, any issues that may have arisen, I told both management and the players to look forward. Everybody stands to benefit and I don't want to sell anyone short in this case." Both Pearly and Thinaah stayed mum today until the negotiations are completed.

Under his guidance, men's singles player Nhat Nguyen secured a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Before his full-time coaching stint, he served as Nguyen's training partner for major tournaments.

Pearly-Thinaah's BAM contract to be finalised before Japan Open
THE future of Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be decided before the Japan Open, scheduled for July 15. BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz stated that both players agreed to this timeline during a recent engagement session. Zafrul mentioned that only a few issues remain unresolved between BAM and the players before a final decision can be made. 'We are close to finalising it. Our discussion only has one or two issues left that I believe we can resolve, God willing.
