9 teacher aspirants detained during protest demanding STET before TRE-4

1 2 3 4 Patna: Eleven days after a similar protest failed to yield any result, the teacher aspirants held another demonstration on Monday, demanding Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) before the fourth phase of Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE-4). As it turned chaotic, police allegedly had to use mild force and detain nine demonstrators. The aspirants, many BEd degree-holders who had been waiting for the exam for months, started their procession from Patna College campus for the CM's residence, but their progress was halted by police and administration at Dak Bungalow crossing. When the protestors attempted to breach barricades, they were met with a forceful response from the police, who didn't deploy water cannons, despite being present at the spot. Carrying banners with slogans like "No STET, no vote" and "STET before TRE-4", the demonstrators voiced their frustration, alleging that the govt had failed to honour its promise to conduct the exam twice a year. "The govt has cheated us. Many of us have completed BEd degrees, and are awaiting the opportunity to sit for the exam, which has not been held since Nov 2023," Chandan Kumar, an aspirant said. Aman Kumar, another teacher aspirant, clarified the demands: "We are not demanding jobs, but just to conduct the STET before TRE-4. If the exam is not held before TRE-4, how will we apply for it," he said. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a three-member delegation of protesters was sent to the secretariat to meet with a representative of the CM. The delegation was reportedly assured that a response would be provided within one to two days, though the protesters said that they have been given similar unfulfilled assurances in the past. According to Krishna Murari Prasad, subdivisional police officer (law and order)-I, they were compelled to disperse the crowd after the delegation was sent, as the remaining protesters continued to create disturbance. "They were still protesting, causing chaos at the Dak Bungalow crossing. We asked them to leave but they resisted, so we had to disperse them," he said. This protest follows a similar demonstration that took place on Aug 7. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Sending stray dogs to shelter homes is inhuman: Animal lovers stage protest

1 2 Lucknow: Stray animals have an equal right to live, and dogs have coexisted with humans for centuries, sending them to shelter homes is inhumane, said animal rights activists and animal lovers during a protest staged at Eco Garden on Sunday afternoon. The demonstration had brought together animal lovers, feeders, NGOs, doctors, engineers, lawyers, veterinarians, government servants, politicians and citizens from across the city. Reports of force being used against peaceful protesters and dogs being caught in Delhi without due process had added to the unrest. The issue was significant enough for the Chief Justice of India to take note and refer the matter to a larger bench on August 14. The final order of the apex court is awaited. Participants said dogs had long been part of the social and religious fabric. Legal experts pointed out that the order overlooked existing provisions under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023. "The dogs are a part of the ecosystem and society, eliminating or pounding them is not the solution. To address the problem scientific treatment including vaccination, sterilization, proper fooding and lodging should be provided. There should be an awareness campaign for making people aware of the protection and adoption of stray dogs," said Pooja Singh, an animal activist. "Dogs often chase vehicles after trauma, and most child bite cases involve provocation. Even those who dislike dogs do not want them to suffer. The difference is only in approach. There should be an awareness drive for the behaviour of these animals," said Neha Zaidi, founder, Fairy Tales (Masoom foundation). Concerns raised included disputed dog-bite statistics, with experts claiming parliamentary data and newspaper reports were in conflict. The protesters demanded strict enforcement of sterilization and vaccination under ABC Rules, an end to forced relocation, responsible media reporting, public awareness drives on dog handling and vaccinations, and promotion of Indie adoptions.
