Dragon live-action remake had 'all sorts of challenges'

Filming How to Train Your Dragon in Northern Ireland was not without its challenges, according to the film's producer.
Dragons tend to be pretty large, for one thing.
The upcoming feature is the first live-action remake of the hit animated series.
"When they animated, they would draw it just to the convenient size they needed it to be," David Cain told BBC News NI.
"But when you're working in real spaces, a large dragon is a large dragon and it takes up the space it needs."

Directed by Dean DuBlois, the film tells the story of how a human and dragon befriend each other, breaking generations of conflict between dragons and Vikings on the fictional isle of Berk.

And Berk was created in a number of locations in Northern Ireland, including Belfast, Dunseverick Castle on the north coast and Tollymore Forest.
Many visitors to Belfast's Titanic Quarter will have noticed the battlements of the Viking village, for instance, built just across the road from the Titanic Studios.
The Sampson and Goliath cranes from the nearby shipyards towered over the set but the dragons left them alone.
And the sets certainly impressed Gerard Butler, one of the film's stars as Stoick, the Viking leader.
"Experiencing those sets that then are dressed and are lit and have torches on fire in the great hall, people get caught up in that energy and they believe in the story," he said in a behind-the-scenes film about the making of How to Train Your Dragon.

BBC News NI spoke to How to Train Your Dragon's producer David Cain, just before President Trump's announcement that tariffs could be applied to films made in foreign countries.

How to Train Your Dragon began life as a hugely successful animated trilogy of films from Dreamworks Animation.
And, according to Mr Cain, there are "all sorts of challenges" in turning an animated hit into a live-action film, not just the size of the dragons.
"You're trying to remake something that was loved and cherished and pay homage to the original and keep the original fans happy," he said.
"While at the same time bringing something fresh and new to the table."

In Belfast, the production spent several months in early 2024 filming at Belfast Harbour Studios and Titanic Studios.

"We also built substantial sets on our back lot," David Cain said.
"Obviously a lot of our work takes place on the mythical island of Berk and its village, so we built a lot of our sets outside for natural light and natural weather."
Audiences in Northern Ireland will quickly recognize the rugged coastline of Dunseverick, where teenagers Hiccup - played by Mason Thames - and Astrid - played by Nico Parker - have a heart-to-heart talk in one of the film's key scenes.
Hiccup befriends the young dragon, Toothless, challenging Viking certainties and the conflict with the dragons.

David Cain said Northern Ireland was "doing everything right" in trying to attract more big films.

"I think you now have a ground of talent in crew," he said.
"What we know as extras, the guys are just so good.
"You've got stages now - I know Belfast Harbour is kind of growing as a development and there's other stages around."
Six years after it ended, it is clear that Game of Thrones left a lasting legacy.
David Cain thinks that How to Train Your Dragon can also screen Northern Ireland to the world.
"Northern Ireland has always had a good reputation with the Game of Thrones HBO stuff that's been done there and there's been numerous films made there," he said.

"We're a big film and hopefully it'll draw attention to the talent and locations and stages and the beauty that Northern Ireland has on offer."

So, this movie needs a way to send them back into crime. With their reputations, none of The Bad Guys can get jobs. Wolf makes the mistake of applying to a bank he robbed three times. The botched interviews montage provides some laughs while creating empathy for our heroes. It's nice that screenwriters Yoni Brenner and Etan Cohen wrote this familiar plight into their script. She's been promoted to Commissioner this time, though Wolf keeps ignoring her new title. Also returning is Marmalade, who has become as swole as Max Cady in 'Cape Fear' due to his time in prison. A super-sized, muscular guinea pig is only one of the many visual delights 'The Bad Guys 2' has to offer. Adults will appreciate that his scene pays homage to ' (from left) Mr. Snake (Marc Maron) and Doom (Natasha Lyonne). Universal Pictures / DreamWorks Animation Directors Pierre Perifel and JP Sans keep the action moving while allowing the performers and the animators to shine. Perifel and Cohen also worked on 'The Bad Guys,' so they have a firm grasp of the material. With his perfectly calibrated grumpiness, Maron once again is the MVP of this franchise. But credit is also due for Rockwell's sly delivery and Lyonne's wry line readings. Brooks is suitably hissable as the feline antagonist. Like all movies nowadays, 'The Bad Guys 2' has a mid-credits sequence that hints at another sequel. Riding Your Way Through Epic Universe
'I hope you have an epic experience,' my Lyft driver said with a bit of an ironically cheerful tone as he dropped me off at Universal's Epic Universe in Orlando, Fla. No worries. I was already primed to do just that. I had been reading about the park for the last couple of years, looking over designs, watching construction videos, imagining the worlds and anticipating the works. Now, I was on a mission. I booked two days at the park in June, only two weeks after its official May 22 opening, to experience each of its 11 rides and see if they lived up to what my imagination was conjuring. Here, the eight that I found worthy of attention, based on the ride experience, consistency of theming and just sheer fun. Surprise Favorite How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk As a roller coaster nerd, I went in expecting that I would be most wowed by the park's aggressive signature coaster, Stardust Racers. But I was even more taken by a family coaster in the How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk section. Hiccup's Wing Gliders is a pleasure from beginning to end. I love a well-thought-out themed coaster and this one has fun little tidbits all along the journey. I had a smile on my face the whole time. The concept is that the character Hiccup, from the 'How to Train Your Dragon' movies, has built a flying machine that helps Vikings (like you) soar. You encounter him and the dragon Toothless in animatronic form early on, then Toothless presses a button with his paw (adorable) and launches you into the main part of the ride. There are some delightful weightless moments, and the track weaves its way across green landscapes, directly over water (with impressive splash effects), into a tunnel and through mist. Epic Universe Will Portal Into Your House With a TV Special
Journey through the portals of Universal Epic Universe in an upcoming one-hour NBC special hosted by Joe Manganiello (One Piece). Inside the Worlds of Epic Universe will take viewers on a tour of America's newest state-of-the-art theme park, which features lands based on How to Train Your Dragon, Nintendo, the Universal Monsters, and Harry Potter. io9 got to visit earlier this year and can't wait to see the park again, even through the television screen. We're especially excited to return to the grounds of Darkmoor. If there's any sort of POV walk-through (much like the other park), that would be very neat. And even if the TV special is a thinly veiled advertisement to entice more visitors, we don't mind. In fact, we have some suggestions for future shows in this vein: how about an after-dark stroll through Dark Universe's spooky ambiance set to that epic Danny Elfman score to watch whenever we need a hit of immersive Universal Horror? What we do know so far about the special is that it will follow Manganiello experiencing Celestial Park, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, and Dark Universe. 'As a kid growing up a huge fan of the movies, I couldn't be more excited about diving into these immersive worlds that bring some of my all-time favorite characters to life,' Manganiello shared in the press release. 'From the iconic monsters of Dark Universe to the super-sized attractions of How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, there is something for everyone to enjoy.' Additionally, Universal family stars and creatives will stop by, including Bowen Yang (Wicked), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise), Jon M. Chu (Wicked), Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon), Matt Rogers, Michelle Yeoh (Wicked), Nico Parker (How to Train Your Dragon), Warwick Davis, and Vin Diesel. We have to note that's a lot of Wicked stars so we'd be happy if they finally announced a Wicked Oz portal, just sayin'. Plus our movie father, Steven Spielberg, will be featured in an extended interview about the cinematic worlds of Universal theme parks. Inside the Worlds of Epic Universe will air Wednesday, August 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.
