Celtic begin season with win at Hearts

BBC News9 hours ago
Celtic got their SWPL season up and running with a 2-1 victory over Hearts at Oriam. Emma Lawton thought she had given Celtic the lead with a header inside 10 minutes but the whistle had blown for a foul. Morgan Cross found the breakthrough shortly after to put Celtic in front and Natalie Ross doubled the visitors' advantage when she dinked over Hearts goalkeeper Rachael Johnstone. Hearts halved the arrears with a Georgia Timms penalty in stoppage time.

Bob MacInytre suffers BMW Championship agony as Scottie Scheffler overhauls Oban hero's four point deficit

It wasn't to be for the Oban star who had held a four shot lead over Scheffler going into the final day of play in Maryland Bob MacIntyre was left reeling after Scottie Scheffler overturned a four-shot lead to reign supreme at the BMW Championship. ‌ The Scottish hero had gone into the final day in Maryland with a healthy advantage after a stellar display on Saturday but was simply no watch for the American in the end, who pipped him to the PGA title by two shots. ‌ World number one and three-time major champion Scheffler capped off a fine comeback with an exquisite chip-in on the 17th hole to edge him towards victory at the Caves Valley Golf Club. ‌ The New Jersey star's glory in 2025 is showing no signs of slowing down, adding the BMW title to the PGA Championship and Open Championship crowns lifted by Scheffler earlier this year. It turned out to be a disappointing final day for MacIntyre who bogeyed his first two holes and wasn't able to register a birdie until the third-last whole. The 2024 Scottish Open winner shot 73 in total, with Scheffler finishing on a 15-under-par total after a final score of 67. Maverick McNealy finished third on 11 under. Elswwhe Shane Lowry comfortably qualified for the PGA Tour 's season-ending Tour Championship for only the second time in his career while Rory McIlroy bounced back five birdies from the ninth hole for a level-par round of a three under total score of 70. Speaking after his triumph, Scheffler said: "I think my consistency has a lot to do with the intensity I bring to each round. ‌ " I try not to take days or shots off. "When it gets to this time of the year it can be a little bit tiring, today was a grind." It's all well and good spending £200million on Sesko and Co. but Arsenal defeat exposes a HUGE hole Man Utd need to fill

MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but the goalkeeper position remains a concern. Here are SunSport's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. 2 2 No 1 ISSUE United have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. NO GOALS — AGAIN United mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Ex-Prem ref says there was no foul on Man Utd's goalkeeper by William Saliba during Arsenal loss But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE United have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre?

'I want to be one of the best players in the world,' says loan star Mikey Moore as Jayden Meghoma joins him at Rangers

Mikey Moore insists he sees his season-long loan at Rangers as a platform to help him become one of the best players in world football. The 18-year-old winger signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur shortly after agreeing his move across the border and made his debut for the Ibrox outfit in their 4-2 home win over Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup. Moore started brightly, setting up Nedim Bajrami for the opening goal, and showed flashes of his ability before being replaced by Thelo Aasgaard on 69 minutes. He promises there is far more to come, though, and has set his sights high when addressing how big an incentive it is to show he can go on to become a bona-fide English Premier League player. 'It's massive for me,' said Moore, who has been joined at Rangers by his England Under-19 team-mate Jayden Meghoma after he completed a loan move from Brentford. 'I want to go and play in the biggest competitions and I want to be one of the best players in the world, hopefully. 'I've signed a new contract at Spurs, but, at the minute, I'm focused on playing here. I'm just buzzing to go and play some massive games at this football club. 'I want to become a better player here and I think there are massive opportunities. 'I just want to play as many games as possible, score as many goals and excite as many people as I can.' And Moore is clear that he would like the chance to star in Tuesday's Champions League qualifying play-off first leg against Belgians Club Brugge. 'It's a massive game, as every game is when you play for Rangers,' he said. 'I'm excited for it. 'I saw some of the games in the earlier rounds and it's been good to qualify, so it's a massive opportunity for me and all the boys. I can't wait.' Moore made five outings for Spurs in the group stage of the Europa League last season, but missed out on the 1-1 group stage draw with Rangers at Ibrox because of illness. He then watched from the bench as the London club went on to win the tournament under former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou. He hopes those experiences under his belt will help him kick on in UEFA competition for Rangers this term. 'It was a really good season in Europe for me and for the team, so I've had some good experiences and I'm ready to go and show more,' he said. 'I want to go and make more of an impact on a European stage.' Meanwhile, new arrival Meghoma declared himself 'hungry and excited' to get going at Ibrox after being reunited with manager Russell Martin. The 19-year-old left-back has joined Rangers on loan in a deal which paves the way for Jefte to complete an anticipated move back to Brazil to sign for Palmeiras. Meghoma made his first-team debut for Southampton under Martin, making four cup appearances in all before signing for Brentford last summer. He has also made four appearances for the Bees and spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston. He told the Rangers website: 'I am very excited to be here, it is a fantastic club and I know a lot about the rich history of Rangers. 'When the deal was presented to me, I thought straight away that it would be a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family. 'The main thing for me is getting results. Rangers is a big club and I am ready, I am hungry and excited to get going.' Ibrox head coach Martin added: 'I am really pleased to welcome Jayden to Rangers. I have worked with him before and I know exactly what he brings. He is a young player with big potential, real athleticism and a great attitude. 'He is hungry to learn and improve and I'm confident he'll thrive in this environment. We're excited to help him take the next step in his career here at Ibrox.'
