Surrey mayor's call to Meta, X, TikTok after shooting at Kap's Cafe: ‘Don't let criminals weaponise you'
Her call came after a shooting at TV host Kapil Sharma's newly opened café in Canada, followed by the disturbing circulation of the attack video online.
New Delhi: Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has slammed major social media platforms, including Meta, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and others, to take immediate and decisive action against the online glorification of violent crime.
'A recent shooting at a local business was brazenly filmed and posted online by an
individual claiming responsibility. This act was meant not only to harm its direct victim
but to terrorize our whole community,' Mayor Locke said in a public statement 11 July.
Shortly after the attack, a man identifying himself as Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, reportedly
claimed responsibility for the shooting in a Facebook post. Laddi is a known member of
the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and is listed among
India's most wanted individuals by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
'A recent shooting at a local business was brazenly filmed and posted online by an
individual claiming responsibility. This act was meant not only to harm its direct victim
but to terrorize our whole community. That fear is real,' said Locke.
The Surrey mayor also mentioned that she visited the scene after the incident and spoke with employees and people in the area.
'I felt it first-hand last night while visiting Kap's Cafe and nearby businesses and
speaking with employees and customers who now worry about their safety. A place that
should have been filled with buzz and excitement about the establishment was instead
overtaken by fear and unease,' she added in her public statement.
Role of social media
Mayor Locke also criticised the role of tech platforms in allowing violent content to
flourish: 'It is intolerable that legitimate news content is sometimes blocked, while
videos glorifying violent crime circulate freely,' she said.
In a strong message, she called on tech companies to do more: 'I am calling on Meta,
X, TikTok, and other social platforms to stop allowing violent criminals to weaponize
your networks against the people of Surrey.'
In the purported post Thursday, Laddi while claiming responsibility cited some remarks
made in 'The Kapil Sharma Show', as the motive behind the attack. The post mentions
that a character in the show had made certain remarks on Nihang Sikhs.
The post claims that Laddi tried contacting Sharma's manager about it but the calls went unanswered.
After the incident, Surrey Police issued a statement that no one at the business was injured, and that SPS officers gathered evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage.
Mayor Locke outlined specific and urgent steps that social media companies must take
to immediately stop the promotion of violent content.
She emphasised the need to permanently ban accounts linked to criminal organizations, promptly remove all content that promotes or glorifies violent crime, and implement real-time detection tools to prevent dangerous videos from going viral. 'These steps are neither optional nor aspirational; they are essential,' she said.

Electoral roll to be used for caste census in Karnataka
The State government has decided to utilise the electoral roll in the State for conducting the social and educational survey (caste census) for 15 days from September 22. The Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission has sought the government's permission for the procedure to be followed for conducting the survey. The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved a method of using electoral rolls in the State for conducting the survey using digital technology. Speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil said that the survey would be conducted in digital format. The development and supervision of the software for the digital survey would be undertaken by the e-Governance Department. He said that the publicly available electoral roll was used by the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission for internal reservation for 101 Scheduled Castes in the State for every person aged above six. Similarly, the Backward Classes Commission would adopt the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission's model and conduct the survey, Mr. Patil said. 50% quota to go Mr. Patil said the Cabinet has decided to do away with the mandatory 50% quota for students of the community in the non-Muslim Minority educational institutions. The colleges and technical educational institutions run by non-Muslim Minority managements would not require to enrol 50% of students from their own community to obtain Minority status. This move was intended to support communities such as Christians, Jains, Sikhs, and Parsis, who were struggling to meet the 50% threshold due to their relatively small population in the State. Among others, the Cabinet has approved ₹171.91 under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development's (NABARD) Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for 13 cold storages of the Agriculture Department. It also approved the Karnataka Employees' State Insurance Society as per Employees' State Insurance Corporation guidelines.

Return to party fold, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal appeals to estranged Akalis
Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Aug 7 (PTI) SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday urged all the Akali leaders who left the party to return to SAD in the wake of an appeal by the Akal Takht calling for unity in the 'qaum" (community). Asserting that he always followed the directions of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, Badal said, 'I bow my head towards the Takht. I feel it is the duty of every Sikh to obey the directives of the Singh Sahiban. I appeal with folded hands to all the Akali leaders who have parted ways with the party to return to their roots to strengthen the 'Panth' and Punjab. 'I also appeal to them to forgive me if I have hurt them in any manner, keeping in mind the need to strengthen the 'jathebandi' (SAD) at this crucial juncture." 'Some people left the party after being upset or some to form their own factions. Being the SAD president, I urge them with folded hands to return to strengthen the party," Badal said while speaking to reporters here. The SAD chief's appeal came a day after the five Sikh high priests directed all 'Panthic' and Akali factions to unite and work together for the larger interests of the 'Khalsa Panth' on critical issues such as the protection of Punjab's land and resources and defence of Sikh identity and religious articles. They reiterated that the Akal Takht belonged to the global Sikh community and stood for the rights and dignity of every Sikh. 'Any group unwilling to honour the directive issued on December 2, 2024, is free to pursue its political path. However, such factions must refrain from misleading the Sikh Sangat by falsely claiming the patronage of the Akal Takht Sahib," the resolution said.
