Speaking after the company's earnings call, Chesky acknowledged the potential of AI but also emphasised that the technology is still in experimental and growing phase and it will take a lot of time for it to lead.
Why AI is not ready to replace Google
Speaking during Airbnb's Q2 earnings call, Chesky advised the investors against viewing AI agents as a full replacement for traditional search engines. 'I don't think we should think of chatbots like Google,' he said.
'I think we're still kind of feeling out the space'.
Chesky also stressed on the fact that while AI chatbots are powerful tools for customer service and personalisation but they lack the referral power and the search infrastructure which Google offers. The Airbnb CEO also said that AI models which power chatbots like ChatGPT are also not proprietary which means that companies like Airbnb can also use the same APIs.
He further mentioned that the success with AI also depends on custom interface and fine-tuning for specific type applications and not just having the best model.
Airbnb's AI strategy
Chesky also revealed that Airbnb has also deployed a customer service agent built on 13 AI models which are trained on thousands of conversations. Presently, it is live in English across the US and the AI deployment has led to 15% reduction in human support requests.
Moving forward, Chesky said that the AI agent will become more personalised and agentic making it capable of handling tasks such as cancellation of reservations directly.

Along with this, the company is also planning to expand it to more languages and also integrate it into trip planning and booking management.
Chesky concluded that AI chatbots are definitely transforming how companies react with users but he believes that it is not enough as the AI agents are enhancers and not replacements at least for now.

AI Startup Perplexity AI Seeks to Buy Google Chrome, Offers $34.5 Billion: Report

AI startup Perplexity AI has made a bid to buy Google Chrome Browser at a valuation of $34.5 billion, according to CNBC report. Interestingly, the current valuation of Perplexity was $18 billion. The startup confirmed, as CNBC reported, that several of its investors are ready to back this high-value deal. AI startup Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search engine that provides direct answers to user queries by synthesizing information from the web, rather than just providing a list of links. It is co-founded by Aravind Srinivas in 2022. Perplexity AI has recently launched its own browser Comet. According to CNBC report, Perplexity's offer comes in the wake of the U.S. Department of Justice's proposal that Google divest Chrome, following an antitrust ruling last year that found the company had maintained an illegal monopoly in internet search. Google responded by accusing the DOJ of advancing 'a radical interventionist agenda" and calling the proposal 'wildly overbroad," while noting it has yet to reveal how it will adjust its business after the ruling. Launched in 2008, Google Chrome supplies the search giant with valuable user data that helps it target ads. In a filing after the court's ruling, the U.S. Department of Justice argued that requiring Google to sell Chrome would help level the playing field for competing search engines. 'To remedy these harms, the [Initial Proposed Final Judgment] requires Google to divest Chrome, which will permanently end Google's control over this critical search access point and give rival search engines access to the browser that, for many users, serves as a gateway to the internet," the DOJ stated. Perplexity AI, led by Indian-origin CEO Aravind Srinivas, has made an unsolicited $34.5 billion (over ₹3,02,152 crore) all-cash bid to acquire Google Chrome, according to a Reuters report. The offer is far above Perplexity's own valuation and marks the latest bold move from the three-year-old AI startup. It claims multiple funds have offered to finance the deal in full, though no names were disclosed. Mobile finder: iPhone 17 Air expected to debut next month The bid comes amid regulatory pressure on Google, with the US Justice Department seeking remedies to address what a court ruled was an unlawful monopoly in online search. One proposed measure includes forcing Google to divest Chrome. Google has said it plans to appeal and has not indicated any intention to sell the browser. Analysts expect a legal process, if initiated, could take years and may reach the Supreme Court. Rivals such as OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo Global Management have also shown interest in Chrome, while DuckDuckGo's CEO has estimated its potential forced-sale value at no less than $50 billion. Founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas along with Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, Perplexity has grown rapidly with its conversational AI search engine, which delivers cited answers in real time. The company recently launched Comet, its own AI-powered browser, and says acquiring Chrome would allow it to access over three billion users worldwide — significantly boosting its ability to compete with OpenAI and others in the AI-driven search space. Srinivas, a Chennai-born IIT Madras graduate, previously worked at Google and interned under deep learning pioneer Yoshua Bengio before launching Perplexity in San Francisco. Under his leadership, the startup has expanded globally, including a partnership with Bharti Airtel in May 2025 that gave 360 million Indian users free access to Perplexity Pro. Despite the high-profile bid, industry experts remain sceptical that Google would part with Chrome, which plays a central role in its AI strategy, including the rollout of AI-generated search summaries under the 'Overviews' feature.
