Actor Rana Daggubati Appears Before Probe Agency In Betting App Case With 5 Years' Bank Details

NDTV2 days ago
Hyderabad:
Armed with a blue file that held bank statements for five years, actor Rana Daggubati appeared before the Enforcement Directorate's Hyderabad office in connection with the alleged online betting games promotion case Monday.
The questioning at the Basheerbagh office lasted for nearly five hours. Soon after, the actor left the probe agency office, choosing not to make a statement or take any questions from the media. The actor, wearing dark glasses, said nothing as the car doors closed.
Earlier, the probe agency, which investigates financial crimes, had issued a notice to the actor to appear before it on July 23.
The 40-year-old actor, due to prior commitments of a shooting schedule at Tamil Nadu's Pollachi, had sought more time to appear before the Hyderabad Zonal ED office.
Earlier this year, the Telangana police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 29 celebrities and influencers, including popular figures like Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Devarakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi for allegedly promoting illegal betting and gambling apps through their social media platforms.
The complaint, filed on March 19, alleges a disturbing trend of celebrities and influencers promoting illegal gambling apps that violate the Public Gambling Act of 1867.
Sources close to Rana Daggubati had told NDTV that a legal team had vetted the endorsement contract before he signed it. He also said Rana had only promoted skill-based games that the Supreme Court has said are legal, that too in regions where it is allowed, and his association had ended in 2017.
Actor Vijay Devarakonda who appeared last week before the ED also sought to make the distinction between legal gaming apps and illegal betting apps, pointing out that the Indian cricket team, women's cricket, volleyball, kabaddi are all promoted by gaming apps that are legal, have a licence to operate, even pay GST.
Complainant PM Phanindra Sarma, a 32-year-old businessman, had claimed that celebrities are allegedly accepting large sums of money to promote various betting platforms, which encourage users to gamble their hard-earned money.
The petition emphasised that these apps and platforms are causing widespread financial harm, particularly among lower and middle-class families who are being lured into the false promise of easy money.
The apps often rely on celebrities to build credibility, leading vulnerable individuals to invest substantial amounts of money, only to face financial ruin, claims the petitioner.
The central agency filed its Enforcement Case Information Record (ECIRs) based on the FIRs and is looking at violations of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, in terms of tax violation, etc in sponsorship and promotion deals, revenue earned through digital advertising etc.
Rana Daggubati is known for his roles in the movies like 'Baahubali' ', Baahubali 2', and 'Vettaiyan'.

West Bengal migrant worker repatriated from Bangladesh after family moves Calcutta HC

Amir Sheikh, a 19-year-old migrant worker from Kaliachak in West Bengal's Malda district who was allegedly detained from Rajasthan in May and 'pushed back' into Bangladesh, was reunited with his family on Wednesday. Mr. Amir's family members said the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel handed him over to the Basirhat police in the State's North 24 Parganas district. Earlier this month, Ziyem Sheikh, the father of Mr. Amir, had filed a habeas corpus petition before the Calcutta High Court. The matter was heard before the Division Bench of Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra. The counsel appearing for the BSF said Mr. Amir attempted to cross over to Indian territory on Tuesday and since he could not produce appropriate identification documents, he was apprehended and handed over to the officer in charge of the Basirhat police station. Speaking to The Hindu, his family contested the BSF's claims. 'I got a call this morning asking me to pick up my son from Basirhat. All this is happening because we approached the court,' Mr. Ziyem said. Refuting BSF's claims Trinamool Congress MP and chairperson of the West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam also refuted the BSF's claims of the migrant worker 'inadvertently crossing the border'. He said an attempt was being made to 'cover up the pushing back of the migrant worker into Bangladesh by the BSF and the Union government by repatriating him'. 'Amir Sheikh from Kaliachak in Malda was deported to Bangladesh by the Rajasthan police with the help of the BSF. From the very beginning, we stood by his family. We helped Amir's father file a habeas corpus petition in the Calcutta High Court. Under pressure, the BSF has brought Amir back to West Bengal,' the MP said, adding that they even have the video Mr. Amir had recorded from Bangladesh. 'He was deported' 'We will legally prove that Amir was deported by the BSF and that he did not go there voluntarily,' Mr. Islam said. He also pointed out that the migrant worker was in the custody of Bangladeshi authorities and had the family not approached the court, he would have continued to languish in detention in the neighbouring country. The matter will come up for hearing on August 27. Hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrant workers have faced alleged detention and harassment in different States and asked to produce documents to prove they are not Bangladeshi nationals. Some migrant workers from West Bengal have claimed that they were 'pushed into' the neighbouring country but later repatriated with the help of Indian authorities.

AIFF assures Jamil of uninterrupted two-year term

Khalid Jamil is the only Indian who has managed teams as chief coach for the last 15 years Panaji: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has assured Khalid Jamil that he will have an uninterrupted two-year stint with the national team, a key factor that convinced the Jamshedpur FC coach to quit the club and take up the national team job on a full-time basis. Jamil, the first Indian to coach the men's national team since Savio Medeira in 2012 and the first full-time domestic coach since Sukhwinder Singh in almost two decades, has signed a two-year contract, with an option to extend for another year, the AIFF announced on Wednesday. He was initially keen on a three year contract. 'Khalid was quitting his secure job at Jamshedpur, so wanted assurance on a long-term deal,' a senior official told TOI. 'He was not interested in any short-term agreement, and the federation didn't want him in a dual club-and-country role. Since the executive committee and the technical committee had enough trust in him, it made sense to hand him a two-year contract.' Jamil is the only Indian who has managed teams as chief coach for the last 15 years, with close to 225 senior games in the top divisions. Other domestic coaches who were in the fray like Sanjoy Sen, Renedy Singh, Mehrajuddin Wadoo, S Venkatesh, Shankarlal Chakraborty, Santosh Kashyap and Ishfaq Ahmed, the AIFF pointed out in its presentation, either had limited success or limited head coach experience at the senior level. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. 'Over the years, I've had the opportunity to train Indian players, and I've grown to understand their strengths and weaknesses intimately. These insights will be fundamental to everything we do as we prepare for the CAFA Nations Cup and the crucial Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore. " Jamshedpur were left with no choice but mutually part ways with Jamil after it became clear that the national team opportunity was too good to skip. Assistant coach Steven Dias will take over as the interim head coach. 'This is a proud moment for the Indian football fraternity as an Indian coach takes charge to guide the nation towards AFC Asian Cup qualification to start with, a challenge we believe rests on Jamil's able shoulders,' Jamshedpur said in a statement. It were Jamshedpur who showed faith in the 48-year-old after he lost his job at NorthEast United in 2022. He first worked at Bengaluru United in the third-tier of Indian football, then had a one-month stint as coach of Nepal Super League club FC Chitwan, before Jamshedpur offered him a second opportunity in the ISL. 'Witnessing his progression has been truly special,' said Jamshedpur CEO Mukul Choudhari, who was the first to provide Jamil with the coaching break during their time at Mumbai FC. 'Khalid's hard work, focus, and commitment has earned him the opportunity, and we couldn't be more proud. I am confident the national team will do well under his leadership.' Cops make citizens aware of ‘digi arrest' frauds

1 2 Lucknow: Lucknow Police south zone has launched a special cyber safety initiative aimed at tackling emerging online fraud techniques, particularly the so-called 'digital arrest' scams. The drive was integrated into Peace Committee meetings held ahead of upcoming high-footfall events — Chehlum (Aug 14), Independence Day (Aug 15), and Janmashtami (Aug 16) — to ensure both security preparedness and public cyber awareness. Officials highlighted that cybercriminals are increasingly using deceptive tactics — including 'digital arrest', where victims are falsely told that they are under legal detention through fake calls or video chats by imposters posing as police or govt officers. Police clarified during the session that no such legal provision as 'digital arrest' exists under Indian law, and members of the public should treat such communications as fraudulent. "The Peace Committee meeting, attended by local representatives, community elders, women, journalists, students, and committee members, included the distribution of pamphlets outlining ten key points on cyber safety. These covered verifying the identity of callers, avoiding unsolicited financial transactions, recognising phishing attempts, and reporting fraud to the cyber helpline 1930. Police have been directed to carry out ongoing awareness programmes in schools, colleges, community centres, public gathering spots, and rural areas. The campaign will include live demonstrations, case studies of recent scams, and guidance on reporting procedures. Awareness materials relating to safeguard from cyber fraud was also distributed, the officer said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
