South African sci-fi writer auctions desk for trans rights

South African novelist Lauren Beukes auctions her writing desk to support trans rights charities in South Africa and the UK.
Following a chance meeting at Eastercon in Belfast, Beukes and British fantasy author Jeannette Ng launched a charity auction that has already raised over £13 000 (R315 000).
The auction, created in response to recent funding cuts in South Africa and a UK Supreme Court ruling affecting trans rights, is backed by a global network of authors, artists and fans.
Items range from bespoke poetry and crocheted creatures to rare books and a signed first edition of Monstrous Regiment by Sir Terry Pratchett.
Proceeds go to The Triangle Project in South Africa and The Good Law Project in the UK.
Among the listings is Beukes's own writing desk, which she used to write four novels including The Shining Girls , later adapted into a TV series starring Elisabeth Moss.
'This was never meant to be a big thing,' Beukes says.
'It started because I had a suitcase of rare books I wanted to auction for a cause. Jeannette suggested we turn it into a proper fundraiser and it just blew up. People care deeply about this.'
The desk, a scuffed antique from the South African village of Stanford, has been with Beukes through her major works.
'It travelled to London with me when I emigrated. It's full of writer karma. Joy, despair, late nights, and the cats loved it.'
Beukes has history with cause-based fundraising.
In 2013 and 2014, she helped raise nearly half a million rand through charity art shows supporting Rape Crisis and Book Dash in South Africa.
'This time, it's about defending rights being eroded and helping communities hit hardest.'
The community response has been strong.
'We're not pro fundraisers,' she says, 'just two writers who started something people rallied around. It's heartening.'
Also up for bidding is a limited black hardcover edition of The Shining Girls , numbered 911 of 1 000, along with genre collectibles, handmade crafts, signed books and services donated by other creators.
Contributors include Olivie Blake, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Ali Hazelwood and Roz Kaveney.
The standout item remains the rare signed first edition of Monstrous Regiment , featuring a trans character, unearthed by Rhianna Pratchett and estate trustee Rob Wilkins. It currently stands at over £6 000 (R145 000).
'Terry was proud of his trans fans,' said the Pratchett Estate.
'He'd be honoured to help this cause and furious it's still necessary.'
Funds will be split between The Triangle Project, one of South Africa's oldest LGBTQ+ organisations, and The Good Law Project, which campaigns for legal protections in the UK.
Ling Shepherd of The Triangle Project says the donation is more than just financial.
'It's solidarity. It means we can keep advocating, supporting, and fighting back.'
Ng says the auction sends a message.
'Genre creators and SFF authors will fight for trans people.'
The auction runs until 7 June, with all current bids honoured.
Bidding and donation details are at http://bit.ly/genrefortrans.

Will 3-Step become the new sound of Mzansi, overshadowing Amapiano?

With chart-topping hits, Jazzworx and Thukuthela are making waves, prompting fans to wonder if their sound, predominantly referred to as 3-Step, could signal the end of Amapiano's reign. Image: File The South African music scene is in a constant state of evolution, but right now, all eyes are on the rising stars Jazzworx and Thukuthela (real names Kamohelo Monese and Kgotso Dube, respectively). With chart-topping hits like 'Isaka (6am)', 'Vuka', and 'Uzizwa Kanjani', these artists are making waves, prompting fans to wonder if their sound, predominantly referred to as 3-Step, could signal the end of Amapiano's reign. As the beat of 3-Step pulses through the airwaves, it's crucial to understand what defines this emerging genre. Basically, 3-Step differentiates itself with a unique rhythmic structure that favours a compelling three-kick-drum pattern, breaking away from the conventional four-on-the-floor beats typical of house music. Its charm lies in the unexpected - with shuffling shakers, spontaneous snare rolls, log drums, and a multitude of layered percussion instruments, the sound conjures a vibrant, hypnotic environment. Unlike many of today's rigid music formats, 3-Step feels energetic and alive, comparable to a live jam session where numerous musicians contribute their magic in real-time. This dynamic genre has its roots firmly planted in South Africa, a cradle for diverse musical expressions. While DJ Thakzin is often credited with the origin and refinement of this captivating sound, the brilliance of 3-Step lies in the collaborative nature of its growth. A plethora of talented producers and DJs have embraced and further developed this style, broadening its appeal both locally and internationally. The dialogue around whether 3-Step can replace Amapiano isn't simply about competition; it showcases a community of artists evolving together. Interestingly, the collaboration extends to Amapiano DJs, who are now incorporating 3-Step into their sets, suggesting a merging of genres rather than outright rivalry. This fusion denotes a unifying movement within Afro-house and Amapiano, expanding the sonic landscape for both artists and listeners alike. However, can the strength of 3-Step truly eclipse the allure of Amapiano? We believe that while the sound is indeed captivating, it is unlikely to force out the beloved Amapiano. Instead, the emergence of 3-Step may invigorate the local music scene and breathe fresh life into established genres, paving the way for greater collaboration rather than competition. Here are a few reasons why: Diverse influence The beauty of Amapiano lies in its versatility. While 3-Step may appeal to a specific audience, Amapiano seamlessly integrates various musical styles, making it accessible and relatable to everyone, from the youth in urban settings to older generations. This cross-generational appeal is an asset that ensures Amapiano's enduring popularity. A global movement Amapiano's influence has broken geographical boundaries, garnering immense popularity beyond the shores of Mzansi. The genre has found enthusiastic audiences in Africa, Europe, and various parts of the Americas, showcasing a global appeal that is difficult for emerging sounds to rival. International superstars such as Beyoncé have spotlighted Amapiano by playing tracks from artists like Uncle Waffles during their tours. Other notable names like Drake, Kelly Rowland, Jorja Smith, Ciara, and Chris Brown have also openly celebrated their admiration for the genre, fostering a wave of international recognition that 3-Step has yet to attain.

Former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, Robot Boii, Vusi Nova, Sophie Ndaba, Tswyza and Zolani Mahola are some of the celebrities that have participated in the game show. She generously decided to donate her winnings to Paediatric Care Africa, a non-governmental organisation that provides essential medical care to children across the country, with a special focus on remote areas where access to healthcare is scarce or non-existent. The donation funded the shipment of a 40-foot container from the UK, filled with vital medical supplies, furniture, and mobility aids. Earlier this year, Modiadie won the R250,000 grand prize for Tshepang Care Centre, a charity based in her hometown. The centre provides crucial support to vulnerable individuals and families in Thembisa, offering food assistance and social services. Located in Thembisa, the Tshepang Care Centre is situated in the Vusimuzi informal settlement, an area plagued by high unemployment rates.

Lil Wayne's Carter 6 has fans divided. Is it any good?

The Carter 6 will more than likely not stand the test of time. Do you even recall any songs on the previous Carter album? image: Instagram/liltunechi Lil Wayne has released the sixth instalment in his Carter series of albums. Fans are in two minds about The Carter 6, and with good reason. ADVERTISEMENT Weez F Baby, and the F might stand for flop. This album could and should be better than it is. LIL WAYNE IS BACK The top end of this album begins with King Carter. A spoken word artist introduces an atmospheric instrumental piece with an orchestral arrangement and a haunting guitar solo. You would be forgiven for thinking that you're about to listen to the best Lil Wayne album you have heard. Unfortunately, this isn't that. We all know how pivotal The Carter 3 was for global rap music, and if we're being sincere, nothing since The Carter 4 has been worth keeping. This project is not an easy listen. Naturally, the production sounds as expensive as you might expect. Bells is a good example of this, but his lyricism leaves a lot to be desired. A LITTLE TOO MUCH LEAN His whole style rests on his raspy delivery. His voice sounds like he might be feeling the weight of his alleged codeine addiction. It's a bit hard to listen to him, and the usually artful word play is not as impressive as we have grown accustomed to. You will find yourself three songs deep without a single quotable to write home about, which is highly uncharacteristic for a Lil Wayne album. WEEZY AND BIGXTHAPLUG Hip Hop is arguably the best song on the top half of the album. Jay Jones accompanies him on this one, along with BigXthaplug, who is a rapper that is worth checking out. The beat is a southern-styled street slapper, and the two approach the chorus like a duet, dispensing the hook in harmony with each other. COTTON CANDY A long-time collaborator of Lil Wayne's joins him on Cotton Candy. Atlanta's 2 Chainz and Wayne have always had a good rapport musically, and this is a testament to that, but again, the record is somewhat forgettable. Worthy of one listen, but I'm certain I won't be looking to play this song next week. ADVERTISEMENT A 19-TRACK OFFERING This is a large album. More concise anthologies in this era tend to be better. Attention spans have shrunk the world over, and this rings true for the people on the other side of the speaker. It's almost like attention wavers, and this is easy to detect the further down you go on The Carter 6. He didn't ladle every song with a feature, which is always good. Some artists did not need to appear on this album. Can someone tell me when we're going to have an honest conversation about Big Sean? It is hard to think of a more unskilled rapper than that, and yet somehow, he's still being invited to feature on people's albums as he does on the forgettable Sharks, which also features Jelly Roll. ELEPHANTS ON THE SAMPLE Peanuts 2 Elephant has had people talking. The arrangement makes use of elephants' trumpeting. A quirky, almost Bay Area-sounding beat makes for an intriguing listen. The raps are horrendous, however. Lil Wayne did manage to compile an interesting spread of producers ranging from talents like Wyclef Jean to Mannie Fresh and even actor Lin-Manuel Miranda but even their efforts behind the boards fail to stave off how disappointing The Carter 6 is. IS THE CARTER 6 GOOD? In all honesty, no. I have no intention of keeping this album or listening to it again, unfortunately. That's a hard thing to say as we are speaking about someone who once represented the ceiling of rap music. His bureaucratic issues with his mentor and father, Birdman, may have marginalised Lil Wayne out of his moment. As sharp as some of his guest appearances have been in recent years, that barely translated to this offering, which is a far cry from the timeless efforts exhibited on most of his past projects. Give it a listen, though. It is a polarising project, but the consensus will probably remain that this is definitely not Lil Wayne's best work. ARE YOU ENJOYING THE CARTER 6?
