Hurling star DJ Carey admits cancer treatment fraud
The ex-Kilkenny sportsman, 54, was charged with various counts of inducing people to make a monetary payment after fraudulently claiming to have cancer and needing finances to obtain treatment.
Appearing at the Circuit Court in the Criminal Courts of Justice, Carey stood to plead guilty to 10 charges put to him.
The court heard that while cancer was referred to in the charges, Carey 'does have very genuine health conditions' and required surgery for a heart condition.
A sentencing date has been set for Wednesday, 29 October.
Carey is one of the most acclaimed figures in GAA history, having won five All- Ireland Championship titles and nine All-Star awards during his career.

TerraUSD: 'Cryptocrash king' Do Kwon pleads guilty to fraud

Two men charged over attempted murder of police officer in Omagh
Two men have been charged over the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer in Northern Ireland two years ago, police said. The men are due to appear at Dungannon magistrates court on Wednesday. The charges follow their arrests and subsequent detention under the Terrorism Act on Monday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said. The PSNI said: 'As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.' Caldwell was a senior officer and has led high-profile investigations into paramilitaries and other criminals. Caldwell retired from the PSNI last December on medical grounds He had been coaching a youth football match and was with his young son at the time of the shooting. He was released from Altnagelvin hospital in April 2023.
