Gautam Gambhir hugged Rishabh Pant for playing 27 balls with fracture; India keeper refused help: 'Main kar lunga'

Hindustan Times2 days ago
The legend of Rishabh Pant today expanded beyond imagination. Not because of his batting. Well, he has already reached that status despite spending just 7 years in Test cricket, but because of the heart he put on display on Day 2 of the 4th Test between India and England at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium. Pant cracked his right toe when a yorker from Chris Woakes hit him flush on his foot. As Pant was driven out in an ambulance, you knew his participation in the remainder of the Test match was going to be dicey. Rishabh Pant and Gautam Gambhir have fun in Manchester(AFP)
Team India's worst nightmare came true around 12 PM on Thursday when sources confirmed to the BCCI that Pant has indeed picked up a fracture and is asked to rest for between 6 and 8 weeks, pretty much ruling him out of the series. The chances of Pant playing any part in the Manchester Test were as good as Mohammed Siraj hitting Jofra Archer for 6 sixes in an over. Exactly. Zero.
But when the BCCI sent out a post on X saying, Pant can bat depending on the team's requirements, the first thing that came to mind was 'You've got to be kidding me'. Well, turns out the board wasn't. Pant indeed walked out to bat at the fall of Shardul Thakur and India's sixth wicket to one of the loudest cheers ever by an English crowd ever reserved for an Indian batter. Limping out to bat, Pant practically batted on one leg, completing his fifty and ensuring India breached 350 to eventually finish on 358.

During his stay at the crease, Pant smashed a six off Jofra Archer and a four against Ben Stokes. England, sensing blood, went for the jugular, darting more yorkers at Pant's injured toe, which the batter saw off carefully. In the end, a peach from Archer uprooted Pant's off-stump, sending it cartwheeling. Pant's innings was over, but his stature as a never-give-up cricketer had grown by leaps and bounds.
Pant refuses teammates' help
As Pant made his way back to the Old Trafford dressing room, a couple of his teammates, Akash Deep and Kuldeep Yadav, had sprinted near the boundary to help him. However, as they tried to assist Pant in climbing the change room stairs, Pant said a defiant 'No'. "Main kar lunga," (I'll do it myself), he could be heard saying. Pant gingerly, but more importantly, climbed the stairs all by himself. It took him time, but the moment he approached the dressing room, there they were, head coach Gautam Gambhir and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, offering Pant a big, warm hug.
Pant had played 27 balls with a fractured foot. Cricket has seen several heroic knocks. Who can forget Graeme Smith walking out with a fractured arm, or Brett Lee bleeding after suffering a cut on his head against India during the 2011 World Cup quarterfinal? And hey, is there a better courageous effort ever seen in world cricket than Anil Kumble bowling with a broken jaw, sending down 14 consecutive overs and picking up the wicket of West Indies legend Brian Lara. Irrespective of the outcome of this match – Manchester Test at Old Trafford has, in all likelihood, cemented Pant as a bonafide legend.

Will Rishabh Pant bat at Old Trafford on Day 5? Here's what India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said

Rishabh Pant had braved immense pain to walk out to bat despite suffering a fracture on his right foot earlier in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Here's what India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said on the prospect of the wicketkeeper-batter walking out to bat once again in Manchester. read more Rishabh Pant had walked out to bat on Day 2 of the fourth Test against England despite suffering a fracture on his right foot less than 24 hours earlier. Reuters Rishabh Pant will bat despite a nursing a fracture on his right foot, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed on Saturday after the end of the fourth day in the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Pant had braved physical pain to walk out to bat and bring up his 18th Test half-century a day after getting struck on his right foot while attempting to reverse sweep a yorker from pacer Chris Woakes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Pant's heroics, along with important lower-order contributions including from Shardul Thakur (41) had ensured India posted 358 in the first innings after England captain Ben Stokes opted to field. India, however, find themselves with their backs against the wall heading into yet another final day in the ongoing five-Test series and Kotak believes Pant will do his bit to help the visitors salvage a draw and keep the series scoreline at 2-2. 'Rishabh will bat tomorrow,' Kotak told reporters after stumps on the penultimate day of the fourth Test. The visitors had lost two wickets without opening their account after starting their second innings 311 behind, thanks to England's mammoth total of 669 that is now the highest Test score at the venue. And even though opener KL Rahul (87 not out) and captain Shubman Gill (78 not out) came to the rescue with an unbroken third-wicket partnership that took India to 174/2 at the close of play, the visitors will need all of their key batters to stand up and delivery on Day 5 to keep the series alive heading into the final Test at The Oval. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Which includes an injured Pant, who is set to bat one last time this series in Manchester, having already been ruled out of the final Test. Kotak lauds Gill and Rahul for their outstanding partnership at Old Trafford Kotak meanwhile, hailed Gill and Rahul for the manner in which they defied the English attack for the better part of the fourth day in a challenging situation. 'A five day wicket will have wear and tear but it is playing fine barring the odd ball turning. They batted with a lot of belief and determination. It is tough when you lose two early wickets. 'But I think at lunchtime also, they had that belief that we will take some time, see first 10-15 overs and then take it from there. So, absolutely brilliant the way they batted,' Kotak added. The former Saurashtra cricketer added that a shift in mindset has helped Gill score a lot more freely in England that he did in the tour of Australia in December. 'See, from Australia series to this series, I have also seen his thought process and the way he batted. It is little different than what he has done in Australia. We discussed, but I would give a lot of credit to him for deciding on that wicket, what he wants to play, when he wants to play. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'And I think he successfully played certain shots and successfully avoided playing certain shots,' Kotak added.

Xavi Hernandez and Pep Guardiola's applications were not genuine: AIFF

A day after its top official claimed that World Cup-winning Spanish great Xavi Hernandez was among the applicants for India football coach's position, the All India Football Federation said that the e-mail received in his name was found to be "not genuine" and three others have been short-listed for the job. The AIFF did not reveal the names in the pruned list but it is widely believed that Khalid Jamil, currently the head coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, is the front-runner for the post left vacant by Spaniard Manolo Marquez. "The AIFF received an e-mail furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the e-mail applications were not genuine," AIFF stated in a media release. One of its officials, on conditions of anonymity, had stated on Friday that the application of Xavi could not be processed as the AIFF did not have resources to hire his services. The IM Vijayan-headed Technical Committee, it is learnt, has also kept Englishman Stephen Constantine, who has previously coached India, and Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic in the short-list. Constantine has coached the Indian team in two phases earlier, while Tarkovic is the most decorated among the shortlisted candidates having managed Slovakia during the 2020 Euro Championship, where his team beat a fancied Poland which had Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski in its ranks. "Following comprehensive discussions and a rigorous selection process, 10 candidates were selected for the committee to review, following which, the TC shortlisted three," the release also stated. "Given the immediate needs of the national team, it is advisable to recommend three coaches from the short-listed pool for final consideration," former India skipper Vijayan was quoted as saying in the release. "Other prominent applicants, many of whom are highly qualified international coaches, will be taken into account for long-term strategic roles in the future," he added. National Team Director Subrata Paul, also a former India skipper, spoke about preference being given to those with some understanding of Indian football. "It is a very important moment for Indian football, and we are committed to appointing a coach who not only brings technical expertise but also understands the unique style, culture, and dynamics of Indian and Asian football. "We believe such a coach will be able to connect with our players quickly and effectively," Paul stated.
