
Nationwide shares major update on £100 customer bonus payout date
If you bank with Nationwide, you could be due a windfall in the next few months — a welcome prospect for those in need of a cash boost.
The building society operates as a mutual rather than a traditional bank, meaning it's owned by and run for the benefit of its members.
As such, Nationwide shares profits among account holders (rather than shareholders) as part of its Fairer Share Payment initiative, with almost 4 million customers nabbing a £100 bonus last summer.
'The Fairer Share Payment is our way of rewarding those members who choose us for their everyday banking as well as having savings or a mortgage with us,' the bank said in a statement.
The exact details of Nationwide's next one-off payout have yet to be revealed, but recently announcement offers a major update on the timeline.
And ahead of the Board's official decision, last year's eligibility criteria gives us an idea of what to expect this time around.
The bank's financial results are due to be shared with the public on Thursday May 29, along with an announcement on the Fairer Share Payment.
A Nationwide spokesperson tells Metro: 'Nationwide's Board will decide on a Fairer Share payment for 2025 and it will depend on our financial performance.
'That assessment will be made after our financial year end, with the eligibility criteria for this year being agreed then too. The decision will be announced as part of our full year results in May.'
Last year, bonuses were deposited into members' accounts between June 13 and June 28, so if the scheme does go ahead – which Martin Lewis's Money Saving Expert said is a 'likely' outcome – you'll probably have a few months to wait before you receive any cash.
However, all the hard work was done for customers in previous payouts, so you shouldn't need to make a claim or request the money yourself.
If it's confirmed and you think you qualify but haven't heard anything from Nationwide by June, get in touch. And don't forget to stay aware of fraudulent attempts at obtaining your personal information to apply for the payment.
Assuming the scheme comes with the same prerequisites as it did for 2023-2024, to be in the running, customers must hold both a qualifying current account as well as a qualifying savings or mortgage account.
Each of the bank's current accounts were eligible, providing certain criteria are met.
The first of these is that the account was open on March 31, the end of the financial year — although those who switched accounts between January 1 and March 31 were exempt from any additional requirements.
Otherwise, Nationwide explained that FlexAccount, FlexDirect or FlexBasic holders must have either received £500, made two payments from their account, or completed at least 10 payments out of the account between January and March to qualify.
Meanwhile, FlexPlus account holders must have paid their monthly fee, and FlexOne, FlexStudent or FlexGraduate customers need to have made at least one payment in or out during March.
Those with investment accounts and stocks and shares weren't included in the criteria, but savings account holders qualified if they had a minimum of £100 in total across Nationwide personal savings accounts or cash ISAs at the end of any day in March. More Trending
When it came to mortgages, customers must have owed at least £100 on their residential mortgage with the building society on March 31.
Home loans through subsidiaries such as The Mortgage Works, UCB Home Loans Corporation Limited, or Derbyshire Home Loans Limited are excluded from the bonus, as are commercial mortgages and those not completed by March 31.

Rich people ‘will have robot butlers within five years - with one major flaw'
We've all had fears about it, right? That one day robots will come in and takeover the world? Well we could be getting that much closer, as one expert has predicted robotic butlers will be a common toy for the super rich by 2030. Right now, humanoids are making great strides (or sometimes, falling over), but are still not quite ready for mass adoption. The chief executive of a company which makes robots used in warehouses across the world says this is about to change, however. Romain Moulin, the founder of Exotec, told Metro that within five years, those with enough money to spare will have robots to wipe their floors and maybe even fold their laundry. It won't be because they are so good at the job, though: 'It's mostly for bragging to your friends,' he said. They will be an expensive novelty at first, and will work for far less time than Jeeves could before taking a break. 'I think the first one we'll see will be like a Roomba,' Romain said. 'It will be sitting in a corner of the room. You will have some friends over and you will tell that humanoid robot, 'Please clean my floor.' 'It will pick up a broom and start cleaning, and then will go back and sit on his chair charging, because he has ten minutes of autonomy. That stuff has high power consumption.' At a push, developments in battery tech might let it keep going for 20 minutes, but ultimately it's not going to last longer than a cordless vacuum. Romain's company makes the Skypod robot, a functional piece of tech serving companies including Gap, Carrefour, Uniqlo and Decathlon. He thinks that when it comes to warehouses, humanoid robots are destined for the scrapheap. 'Nobody has a convincing answer on why you would have legs instead of wheels for an industrial environment,' he said. 'Why would you want legs on a flat concrete floor? You will save half of your robot price by removing them.' By replicating the shape of a person, they're optimising something 'to run in the bush and pick apples in the trees' because humans were built for prehistoric survival, not packing parcels. But he does admit they are more useful in places where humans tend to be, such as hospitals, restaurants, or houses. Bringing a robot home isn't simple, though, as it's a much less regimented environment. 'Payload, autonomy, and safety are the biggest challenges,' Romain explained. 'If you increase the performance of your robot and you want it to lift heavier things, you are creating more chance to hurt someone.' He said that for a robot to be able to stand and walk around, its legs would have to weigh some 40kg, which is already enough power to do damage. Do you want a robot housekeeper? Humanoid robots are becoming more and more high profile, made by companies such as Tesla, which says their Optimus model will be 'capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive or boring'. This robot is expected to cost around $20,000, but Romain guessed that fully functioning humanoid robot capable of doing household tasks independently would be more like $200,000. While we're fascinated by robots that look like us, they are more complicated to programme than a box on wheels. Balancing is a particular issue, and if it goes wrong it can lead to disturbing scenes like this robot 'going berserk' in a Chinese workshop. Romain says this is likely to have been down to its sensors realising it was still not stable, so making bigger and bigger 'crazy' moves to try and fix the problem in a feedback loop. More than 36,000 Scottish families benefit from HMRC scheme
According to new figures from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), 36,095 families in Scotland are using the UK Government's Tax-Free Childcare scheme to cut annual childcare costs. Nearly 826,000 working families across the UK saved up to £2,000 per child in the 2024 to 2025 tax year. Under the scheme, the government contributes £2 for every £8 deposited into a Tax-Free Childcare account, up to £500 every three months per child - or £1,000 for a disabled child. This equates to a maximum of £2,000 per year for children aged 11 and under, and up to £4,000 per year for children with disabilities until the September after their 16th birthday. The funds can be used for a wide range of approved childcare, including nursery fees, after-school clubs, and holiday care during school breaks. You should also be aware that your rate will drop if you withdraw more than three times a year, so this is best if you're not planning to withdraw often. A similar option is Chip's Cash ISA deal, which has an interest rate of 4.82% but allows unlimited penalty-free withdrawals. If you have more than £20,000 to save, Atom Bank has an easy access account with a rate of 4.75%. However the interest rate drops in any month you withdraw so it's best if you just want to store money. If you're looking for a one-year fixed account, Cynergy Bank pays the top rate at 4.4% and can be opened with a minimum of £1,000. The top two-year fix is only slightly higher at 4.43% and it comes from Birmingham Bank. It can be opened online with a minimum of £5,000.
