Football visionary Hamidin is Sportswriters' top leadership pick
Over the past three decades, the 60-year-old has played a pivotal role in shaping the country's football landscape at both state and national levels.
Hamidin began his football carrer in 1995 as executive secretary of the FA of Selangor (FAS), before serving as its secretary-general from 1998-2013.
During his tenure, Selangor lifted 18 trophies, including five Malaysia Cup titles, cementing their dominance in local football.
His success in Selangor led to national duties.
He became FAM secretary-general in 2013 and was elected president in 2018.
Since then, Hamidin has introduced structural reforms aimed at improving governance and player development.
A standout achievement under his leadership was Malaysia's qualification for the 2023 Asian Cup on merit — their first in 43 years — marking a significant milestone in Harimau Malaya's revival.
Central to that success was FAM's push for naturalisation and heritage-based recruitment, moves that strengthened the squad and improved competitiveness.
Beyond football, Hamidin also served as deputy president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
"Hamidin is not just an expert in football management. He embodies a rare kind of leadership that inspires," said SAM deputy president Izahar Atan.
"His commitment, clear vision and courage to make big decisions are why he was chosen as this year's Sports Leadership Icon."
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is expected to attend the SAM-100PLUS Awards ceremony in Petaling Jaya on Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) said Kelantan Red Warrior (KRW) should have done their homework to avoid "being booked" by FIFA. The status of the A1 Semi Pro League side is now in question due to their link with Kelantan FC. KRW have insisted they are a new and separate club, not an offshoot of Kelantan FC. However, FIFA is holding KRW accountable for Kelantan FC's non-payment of salaries to players, KRW replied to FIFA last Saturday, in response to a show-cause letter from the world body. Under FIFA's "sporting succession rule", sanctions can be imposed on new clubs deemed to have inherited the obligations of their predecessors. FAM secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said KRW should have done a thorough check, and this includes avoiding the use of names, logos, or identity elements that could cause confusion. "They should have researched before signing players and everything. But when it reaches this point... we are forced to intervene. "I was informed that their CEO had told the team to avoid using the (previous team's) logo. But I'm not sure. That's between the AFL (Amateur Football League) and the team," said Noor Azman at a press conference today after a sponsorship renewal ceremony between FAM and Kronos.

Opening round cheer for Jin Wei in Macau
KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei reached the second round in only her third tournament of the season after winning her opening match at the Macau Open today. The Malaysian world No. 47 beat Denmark's world No. 54 Amalie Schulz 21-14, 21-12, in 24 minutes at the East Asian Games Dome. Jin Wei has struggled for form this year, having suffered first-round exits in six of eight tournaments. She advanced to the second round at the Swiss Open and Asia Championships in March and April respectively. Prior to the Macau Open, she suffered consecutive first-round defeats at the Indonesia Open, Malaysia Masters, and Thailand Open. However, Jin Wei faces a tough second round match, against China's world No. 5 Chen Yu Fei. In the men's singles, Cheam June Wei lost in the first round to Indonesia's 2023 World Junior champion Alwi Farhan. World No. 68 June Wei went down 21-16, 21-14 to the world No. 25th Indonesian. In an all-Malaysian mixed doubles affair, Loo Bing Kun-Go Pei Kee came from behind to edge Wee Yee Hern-Chan Wen Tse 13-21, 21-15, 21-19. Bing Kun-Pei Kee will next face Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi-Nita Marwah.

FAM aims for zero referee errors in 2025-26 Malaysian League
THE Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is pushing for zero referee errors in the 2025-26 Malaysian League season, building on last season's 98 per cent officiating accuracy rate. FAM deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram expressed optimism while acknowledging the human factor in refereeing. 'We can say zero issue, but we must remember they are human too. Everybody will have some family problem or whatever they bring onto the field... so we hope for the best,' Sivasundaram said during a press conference after the renewal of FAM's sponsorship deal with Kronos and the launch of the new referees' jersey. Sivasundaram, who chairs FAM's Referees Committee, noted that feedback and criticism are crucial for improving officiating standards. 'Previously, I mentioned that out of 208 matches last season, we received five complaints, of which only two were confirmed referee errors while the other three were not... nevertheless, I respect all opinions, and wherever we have weaknesses, we must improve,' he added. The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system significantly boosted decision accuracy to 98.07 per cent last season, up from 88.76 per cent in 2023-24, as per Referee Assessors' reports. - Bernama
