Comedian Paul Rodriguez arrested in Burbank again on suspicion of drug possession
Comedian Paul Rodriguez faces fresh allegations of narcotics possession after being arrested on similar charges less than five months ago in the same city. Burbank police arrested the 70-year-old 'Blood Work' and 'Rat Race' actor around 8:30 p.m. Monday at a parking structure in the city's downtown area, police Sgt. Stephen Turner confirmed to The Times on Thursday. Rodriguez was booked later at Burbank City Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor narcotics possession. He was released early Tuesday morning with a citation and is due in court Sept. 5. A legal representative for Rodriguez did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment Thursday. Police showed up at the parking structure for a welfare check after a witness voiced concern about a man and woman leaving a restaurant in the area. According to Turner, the witness told police the woman and the man, later identified as Rodriguez, were 'under the influence and not alert.' Officers located people who matched the witness' description in a vehicle in the structure. Rodriguez was in the driver's seat and a woman was in the front passenger seat. 'The investigation led to the discovery of alprazolam [Xanax] and heroin inside of the female's personal bag,' Turner said, adding that the woman was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Officers also allegedly found Xanax and 'suspected fentanyl' in Rodriguez's vehicle. The actor said the drugs weren't his, Turner said. The details of Rodriguez's arrest Monday echo those from his previous arrest in Burbank in March. The 'A Million Little Things' actor was arrested after police allegedly found narcotics in his vehicle during a traffic stop. Rodriguez disputed law enforcement's recounting of the incident, telling TMZ in March that he was sleeping in the passenger seat when a 'Caucasian' officer on a 'power trip' slapped him to wake him up. Rodriguez told the outlet that the drugs belonged to the person who was driving. At the time, Rodriguez's attorney Bobby Samini called the charges against his client false and said the comic's arrest and treatment by police were a 'violation of his civil rights.' 'He fully cooperated with law enforcement at all times,' Samini said in March. 'Law enforcement asserted that the driver of the vehicle was in possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Rodriguez did not have any controlled substance in his possession, nor was he under the influence of any controlled substance.' Rodriguez, who was born in Mexico and raised in East Los Angeles, began his career at L.A. comedy clubs in the late 1970s and has written and starred in numerous comedy specials. His résumé also includes hosting gigs for Univision and MTV programs and roles in films 'Made in America,' 'Tortilla Soup' and 'The World's Fastest Indian.' Barbie celebrates Venus Williams' equal pay advocacy with Inspiring Women Doll
The $38 doll will be available at Mattel Shop starting Aug. 15. 1:31 Tennis legend Venus Williams, who's known for a historic fight for equal pay, is now being honored with her own Barbie Inspiring Women doll. Barbie announced Wednesday it will celebrate the seven-time Grand Slam champion and gender equality advocate with a collectible doll modeled after her 2007 Wimbledon victory look, featuring an all-white outfit paired with a green gem necklace, wristband, racket and tennis ball. In 2005, Williams met with French Open and Wimbledon officials, demanding equal pay for female players and publicly calling the tournaments being on the "wrong side of history" in a personal essay for The Times in 2006. Her advocacy led to both events awarding equal prize money by 2007, with Williams becoming the first woman to benefit when she won Wimbledon that year. "A champion both on and off the court, Williams made history in 2007 by demanding equal prize money for women in professional tennis, paving the way for future generations of female athletes to pursue their dreams without limits," Barbie said in a statement. "Just as Barbie remains dedicated to inspiring limitless possibilities, Venus's bravery and commitment to gender equality continues to inspire people around the world – both in sports and beyond." The doll will retail for $38 at Mattel Shop starting Aug. 18, with Barbie Club 59 members getting early access on Aug. 15, according to a press release. This May, Williams was also among nine female athletes made into Barbie dolls to celebrate the brand's 65th anniversary. "Throughout my career, I've always been driven by the idea of shattering glass ceilings and staying true to myself, and Barbie's mission couldn't resonate more deeply with that ethos," Williams said in a press release at the time. Fire forces Beverly Hills pasta palace Funke to close
Evan Funke's eponymous Beverly Hills restaurant, where delicate handmade pastas are rolled out and shaped in front of guests, is temporarily closed following a Tuesday evening fire. According to a representative for the City of Beverly Hills, the small fire was contained primarily within the ventilation duct system, and the restaurant sustained minimal damage. In an email statement to The Times, Funke said that the cause of the fire is unknown. The Beverly Hills Fire Department confirmed that the source of the fire is under investigation. Guests and staff evacuated the building, and no one was hurt. Funke is currently ranked 25th on the L.A. Times 101 list of best restaruants. It opened in May 2023, the third project from the celebrity chef who also operates Mother Wolf in Hollywood and Felix Trattoria in Venice. The restaurant is a partnership with real estate investor Kurt Rappaport, and quickly garnered local and national praise for its hyper-regional focus. On its menu, each pasta dish details the region in Italy where Funke first tried it, and the name of the woman who taught him how to make it. At the center of the restaurant, a glass room allows for guests to view fresh pastas being made by hand, while a semi-open kitchen provides a view into Funke's pizzas, grilled meats, signature fried squash blossoms and beyond. Funke also turned heads with its pastry and bread program headed by Shannon Swindle. 'This sfincione, which means sponge, is the closest I've come to the best pizza I've ever tasted,' L.A. Times Food columnist Jenn Harris wrote of the tomato-topped focaccia. According to Funke, guests with reservations already on the books for this week will be contacted by members of his team, who will offer alternative reservations at his other local restaurants. 'We're relieved to share that all building safety systems functioned exactly as designed,' Funke wrote in his statement. 'Thanks to the calm cooperation of everyone present, our staff and guests were evacuated swiftly and safely. Our deepest gratitude to the Beverly Hills Fire Department for their rapid response and expert handling of the situation. … We're truly grateful for your patience and understanding as we work diligently to repair and restore the affected areas. We can't wait to host you all very soon. All love and pasta.' According to a representative for the Beverly Hills Fire Department, firefighters received the alarm at 6:31 p.m., arrived on the scene one minute later and remained until 10:30 p.m., ensuring the fire was thoroughly extinguished. Funke could not be reached for further comment, and a representative for Funke declined to share a projected reopening date. Funke is located at 9388 S. Santa Monica Blvd. in Beverly Hills.
