Pankaj Tripathi doesn't believe his acting has a type: '10 paintings from a painter look similar from afar'
Pankaj Tripathi is Madhav Mishra once again. The actor has returned as the beloved lawyer for the fourth time in the new season of Criminal Justice. In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, the actor opens up about returning to the character and avoiding being typecast. The fourth season of Criminal Justice, titled A Family Matter, sees Madhav Mishra fighting his toughest case yet. Talking about returning to the familiar character, Pankaj says, "It is a bit like meeting an old friend, too, and also like remembering something you once studied." Ask him about how he makes sure the character does not fall prey to repetition, and Pankaj replies, 'That is all due to the writing. As an actor, you can pick the best available path to portray a character. There, as a choice, you can avoid the cliches and pandering to the audience.' Madhav Mishra is a role that he has played the most number of times on screen. But his critics argue that a little bit of Pankaj Tripathi in most roles he does. The actor addresses that and says, "There is a problem in our Hindi film industry that in the days of struggle, there is no work. There were 2-3-year periods between 2004 and 2012 when I did not even face a camera. I could not shoot. After that, I got some small roles, and slowly, I became bigger. A lot of offers came my way. Jab bhookh zyada lagi ho to over-eating karna sambhav hai (When you are famished, there is a possibility of over-eating). So, I overate. I did a lot of work. That creates the challenge of keeping things different. You try, that's all you can do." But he does not agree that all his roles are similar. "If you look at 10 paintings from one painter from afar, they look similar, because he has his own style. But the moment you go closer, you see minor differences. That is my effort too, to bring that minor difference," argues Pankaj, adding, "The important thing is to work less. But when you do a lot of work, my effort is not to lose my touch that the audience likes, but the characters still feel different." Criminal Justice: A Family Matter also stars Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen, Asha Negi, Khushboo Atre, Mita Vashisht, and Shweta Basu Prasad. The first three episodes of the season premiered on JioHotstar on May 29, with one releasing every week subsequently.

The Royals actor Lisa Mishra defends show amid polarising reactions: 'I'm just glad people tuned in'
Netflix's The Royals is the most talked-about Indian show currently. Ever since it dropped on the streaming platform a couple of weeks ago, the show has dominated trends worldwide. However, it has also elicited a lot of polarising reactions from critics and viewers alike. Many have criticised the show's depiction of royal families, as well as the writing and performance. But Lisa Mishra, who plays Nikki on the show, takes it all with a pinch of salt. In a chat with Hindustan Times, the musician-turned-actor talks about the show's reception and more. (Also read: The Royals director responds to criticism of show, Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar's 'absent' chemistry: I'll try better) Ask her about the contrasting responses The Royals has received and Lisa says, 'Yes, there were a lot of people who liked the show and us, and some who did not like it as much, which is natural. But I am just glad people tuned in. Whether you liked it or didn't, you watched and you talked about it. I guess that is what made it trend in 43 countries. In the end, art is like that. Not everyone will like everything you make.' A post shared by Lisa Mishra (@lisamishramusic) The Royals stars Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter in the lead roles, and the show features a few steamy scenes between the two. Naturally, there was an intimacy coordinator on set. Even Lisa made use of the intimacy coordinator for a kiss scene she had with Kavya Trehan in the show. Talking about the experience, she says, "I had always assumed an intimacy coordinator would be telling you where to place your hand and such technical stuff. But it's not about that at all. It is more about feeling safe and comfortable. In our case, Kavya and I had our scenes and our intimacy coordinator - Aastha - spoke to us and got us talking about our comfort levels and boundaries. That was our prep, and we talked so much that by the time, we went to shoot, we were there mentally." Before taking the acting plunge, Lisa was a singer-songwriter. She still performs and has just recently released a new single. Yet, she is certain about one thing - she doesn't want to play a musician on screen, at least not yet. "I consciously decided to take up roles that don't require me to be a singer or musician," she says, adding, "I have sung for shows I am part of, but that is me contributing to the soundtrack as a musician. I don't want my acting career to be an extension of that. So, whether it is Call Me Bae or The Royals, the effort is to do something different. And I will keep trying to do that."

'King of the Hill' voice actor Jonathan Joss fatally shot outside his Texas home
Jonathan Joss, a voice actor best known for his work on the animated television series 'King of the Hill,' was fatally shot near his Texas home, authorities said Monday (June 2, 2025). Police were dispatched to a home in south San Antonio about 7 p.m. Sunday (June 1, 2025) on a shooting in progress call. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the wounded 59-year-old near the street. 'The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,' San Antonio police said in a statement. Joss' husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, confirmed the actor's death to The Associated Press in a text. The two were married earlier this year on Valentine's Day. In an email, San Antonio police did not immediately provide any information on what prompted the shooting. In a statement, de Gonzales said he and Joss had previously faced harassment, much of it 'openly homophobic.' Joss' husband said the person who killed the actor yelled 'violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire. 'He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' Mr. de Gonzales said. Before the shooting, Mr. de Gonzales and Joss were checking mail at Joss' home, which had been heavily damaged during a January fire that claimed the lives of their three dogs. A man approached the two and threatened them with a gun, Mr. de Gonzales said. 'Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' Mr. de Gonzales said in a statement. After the shooting, authorities arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja and charged him with murder in Joss' death. Court records did not list an attorney who could speak on behalf of Ceja, who was being held in the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. In a statement, San Antonio police said its investigation 'has found no evidence whatsoever to indicate that Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation." 'We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly," police said. Joss, who grew up in San Antonio, was best known as the voice of John Redcorn, a Native American character on the popular 'King of the Hill' animated series that ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the show is set to start in August. Joss also had a recurring role on the television show 'Parks and Recreation,' playing Chief Ken Hotate. He appeared in two episodes of the series 'Tulsa King' in 2022. A GoFundMe page had been set up in January for Joss after the house fire. According to the page, Joss had lost all of his belongings in the fire, including his vehicle. Before he was fatally shot, Joss had been in Austin, located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of San Antonio, for events related to a sneak peak of the 'King of the Hill' revival. On Saturday (May 31, 2025), Joss had posted a video on Instagram in which he said he was signing autographs at a comic book store in Austin. 'The fans get to revisit 'King of the Hill' again, which I think is an amazing thing because it's a great show,' Joss said in the video, adding he had already done voice work on four episodes of the revival. Joss' husband said Joss was grateful for his fans. 'To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family,' Mr. de Gonzales said.
