'Our love is frowned upon, but we push through': Navigating religion and relationships

It was love at first sight for Adarsh Ramchurn. "I couldn't control it," he says of his flourishing affection for Nav Sangha. But their relationship is "frowned upon" by some in their communities, they say, as Adarsh is Hindu and Nav is Sikh. They've been an item for three years and say they receive hateful comments on social media when posting about their life together. They are also abused because Adarsh, 24, has a darker skin tone than Nav, a form of prejudice known as colourism. India's interfaith couples on edge after new law 'My parents' interracial marriage caused a global scandal' "We push through it," says Nav, 22. "There are also people who are very supportive and that are in similar situations." Data compiled by YouGov in January suggests 45% of 18 to 24-year-olds in the UK believe there is a God, or believe there are Gods. The next highest figure, 36%, is for the over-65s. BBC News spoke to Nav and Adarsh as well as a Christian from Married At First Sight (MAFS), a Muslim from The Only Way is Essex (Towie), and a former Jehovah's Witness for the Sex After documentary series. During a discussion between the participants, Nav was asked what the hardest bit about being a Sikh was. "Probably getting the backlash of being with a Hindu," she said. She and Ardash knew their interfaith relationship could be an issue for their parents, so spoke to them early. "I know it's different for every family, there can be difficult dynamics," says Adarsh. "But if you can have the open discussion [about] dating outside of your religion… I'd always say [you should]." Something Adarsh's parents were quick to ask him about was marriage. The couple say, if they were to wed, they would probably do a Sikh and a Hindu ceremony. "If we have kids, I feel like it's important that they learn about both religions and faiths," Nav adds. Adarsh agrees and says he's "looking forward to it". Junaid Ahmed's parents were not as accommodating. His fear of being rejected by them took hold at a young age. Junaid knew being gay contravened the Islamic beliefs he and his family shared. "When I did finally come out [aged 18], I did expect the worst and… [it] did happen," he tells us. "They threw me out; they disowned me." He says he doesn't blame his parents for ostracising him. "I genuinely don't - it's made me the person I am today." Junaid, now aged 26 and a star of Towie, says he often gets abuse online from other Muslims because he is open about his sexual orientation, but "that [has] never changed my relationship with God". He says he is grateful for his religious upbringing and still prays everyday. Like Junaid, Martin Riley - who was brought up a Jehovah's Witness - was also ostracised by his family. However, in his case, it was because a few years ago he was expelled from his religion completely, in a process called disfellowshipping. For Riley, as he is known to his friends, this meant being shunned by other members of his congregation - including close friends and family. His first marriage, which lasted 20 years, had broken down a few months before he was expelled. He was a particularly strong believer and, while dating after he was expelled, he abided by the rule of not having sex before marriage. It was only when Riley began dating the woman who is now his wife, that he began seriously considering whether he wanted to continue adhering to the religion that he'd been part of for 40 years. His wife is not a Jehovah's Witness. "I realised that I did not want to have a future that didn't include her, whether that meant returning to the religion or not." After having sex with her for the first time, which he describes as being, "like in the movies", he recalls: "I was actually surprised by how guiltless I felt about the whole thing." Riley, 48, now considers himself an atheist. Looking back at his expulsion from the religion aged 42, he says: "It was devastating for me, at the time. Now I think it is probably one of the best things to ever happen to me." Unlike Riley, Sacha Jones did not grow up devoutly religious, but was baptised as a Christian last year after finding her faith. She has vowed to remain abstinent until she marries. "I haven't slept with anyone since my baptism," she says. "So I'm fresh in the eyes of the Lord!" Sacha, 30, also says the culture around dating today makes it difficult to form a long-term relationship. Last year she participated in MAFS, but split up with her partner following the show. "It's the absolute trenches out here in the dating world… it's difficult to trust a man anyway, but then to trust someone that doesn't fear God as well?" She says she doesn't miss sex as much as she might do because she isn't dating anyone at the moment. She believes the wait will be worth it - once she's married. "I no longer lack purpose or peace," says Sacha, who isn't the "party animal" she once was. "I'm happier than I've ever been." Uneasy truce between Ajit Pawar and Bhujbal

Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal is finally back in the state cabinet. Even after taking oath, he is not mincing his words as he has been speaking of how unhappy he was ever since he was left out of the cabinet post last year's assembly elections. He has also indicated that party chief Ajit Pawar was not keen on inducting him earlier but with changed circumstances and a nudge from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, he is back in Mantralaya. While Fadnavis and BJP leaders have expressed happiness over his return to the cabinet, most NCP leaders have remained silent. That Ajit Pawar and Bhujbal never really got along is well-known in political circles. The Ajit camp had strongly opposed Bhujbal's selection as deputy chief minister after Congress-NCP returned to power for a third term in 2009. Ajit succeeded in removing Bhujbal from the post a year later when Ashok Chavan stepped down as chief minister due to the Adarsh scam. Since then, the duo have rarely seen eye to eye. It was surprising for many when Bhujbal joined Ajit when the party split in 2023. Some think it was Fadnavis who advised Bhujbal to join Ajit. During Manoj Jarange-Patil's agitation seeking inclusion of Maratha community in the OBC category, Fadnavis had become a prime target. Bhujbal stepped in and did what most leaders from ruling Mahayuti did not do: Take on Jarange-Patil openly. Little wonder Fadnavis was keen on getting Bhujbal back in the cabinet. The ruling Mahayuti's focus on the OBCs and resignation of another OBC leader Dhananjay Munde from the cabinet probably left Ajit Pawar with no choice. People in the NCP are however wondering how long the Ajit-Bhujbal truce will last. A major reason why Ajit Pawar kept Bhujbal out of the cabinet was the latter's anti-Jarange image as Maratha voters are a strong base for his party. Bhujbal being Bhujbal, is likely to remain aggressive on the issues of OBCs. A friction is unavoidable, feel many in the NCP. Mohite Patil, Deshmukh on radar? There is a buzz in the Opposition camp that some prominent leaders from the opposition parties could be on the radar of investigating agencies in the coming days. The Mohite-Patil clan, comprising former deputy chief minister Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil, his nephew and NCP (SP) MP Dhairyasheel Mohite-Patil and son Ranjitsinh (who is a BJP MLC), stood by Sharad Pawar in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The MVA won Madha and Solapur Lok Sabha seats due to the clan's support. A case related to Solapur district cooperative bank is haunting Mohite-Patil. In neighbouring Latur, Congress legislator Amit Deshmukh too seems to be treading cautiously. He played a significant role in Congress winning the Latur Lok Sabha seat. Following Ashok Chavan's joining the BJP, he has emerged as the party's face in Marathwada. Amit, son of former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, is also to be a good organiser. There is also a feeling in the MVA camp that the ruling parties will try to poach some of its (remaining) leaders ahead of the crucial local body polls due in September-October. Time for ethics committee The seizure of ₹1.84 crore cash from a suite of a government rest house at Dhule during the visit of the state legislature's estimates committee has come as an embarrassment for the legislature. Police have begun investigation after Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders found the cash and alleged that it was meant for the committee members. Both the presiding officers of state legislature—legislative council chairman Ram Shinde and legislative assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar—have taken a serious cognisance of the incident. Shinde suspended Kishor Patil, the staffer of the legislature who was working for the ethics committee as the cash was found in his suite. Narwekar on Saturday said he would speak with leaders of all parties and form an ethics committee of the legislature. Several senior legislators feel the need to form the ethics committee which would draw guidelines and code of conduct for the legislators. About two decades ago, there was a move to form such a panel but nothing much happened. Maybe, this is the time for the legislature to take a hard look at the functioning of some of their own. Setback for Pawar Sr Satyajit, son of former minister Vikramsinh Patankar who is considered a close aide of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, joined the BJP last week. For over two decades, senior Patankar was the MLA from Patan in Satara and has also served as a minister in the Congress-NCP government. He is also a respected figure in Satara. Since 2014, his son Satyajit contested two assembly elections in his place but lost to Shambhuraj Desai of Shiv Sena. Patankar and Desai families have a long-standing feud. Satyajit was unhappy as Pawar conceded the seat to Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in last year's assembly elections. Significantly, BJP scored over Ajit Pawar-led NCP, which was also wooing Satyajit to join its fold.

Adarsh Gourav reveals teaser of Tu Yaa Main was just announcement video to test the waters, film shoot hasn't even begun

Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor are all set to share the screen in Bejoy Nambiar's film Tu Yaa Main. The teaser was released in March and received a positive response from the audience. Now, in a conversation on the Untriggered podcast, Adarsh revealed that he and Shanaya are yet to begin filming. The makers released the announcement video to generate buzz. (Also Read: 'The bar is in hell' but Reddit is impressed as Shanaya Kapoor finally gets her Bollywood debut with Tu Yaa Main) Speaking about the genre, Adarsh described it as a "creature feature" and revealed that while the film begins as a romance, the entry of a creature shifts the entire narrative. He further clarified that the actual film has not been shot yet, saying, 'We just shot the announcement video, which wasn't even the teaser of the film. We haven't shot the film. We are going to begin shooting in June this year. You know how sometimes films release an announcement video just to create buzz or test the waters. It's not that they are uncertain about making the film—at least, I hope not. This isn't getting shelved.' He also reflected on shooting the announcement video, saying, 'I feel like when we shot it, we had only a preliminary understanding of the character, because we were working off the sides provided to us. I have read the script, but it's changed a lot from what it was six months ago. So you end up projecting your own idea of the character because you haven't yet done the research. This is where good directing and editing save your a**. All the wrong choices I made as an actor that day were edited out.' The film stars Adarsh and Shanaya as social media influencers trying to escape a man-eating crocodile. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by Anand L Rai, the film is slated for release on Valentine's Day next year. Shanaya is currently shooting for Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan opposite Vikrant Massey. Directed by Santosh Singh, and presented by Zee Studios and Mini Films, the romantic musical is produced by Mansi Bagla and Varun Bagla and will release in theatres on 11 July. Adarsh, meanwhile, is gearing up for his South Indian debut with a Telugu psychological thriller. The yet-to-be-titled film is produced by Jahnavi, daughter of RRR producer DVV Danayya, and directed by Baba Shashank. It is expected to release in 2025.
