Wesak Day float procession in Brickfields set to draw massive crowd on Monday
Joint Wesak Celebration Committee (JWCC) chairman Ng Yong Pau said the procession, featuring about 30 floats, will start at 6 pm from the Buddhist Maha Vihara at Jalan Berhala and pass through Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Jalan Petaling, Jalan Yap Ah Loy, Jalan Hang Lekiu, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Raja Chulan.
The procession will then return to the Maha Vihara via Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Jalan Tun Sambanthan and Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad the same night, completing an approximately 12-kilometre journey in four hours.
'The 25,000 devotees are those walking alongside the floats in stages, excluding the thousands more who will be bystanders or waiting to watch the procession. So you can imagine a huge crowd will be waiting. This year's theme is 'Foster True Compassion and Wisdom, Forge True Peace and Harmony' .

According to Ng, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook is scheduled to attend the launching ceremony on Monday evening.
Apart from the procession, the Maha Vihara will also organise a blood donation campaign and provide free food. Thousands of devotees are expected to visit the temple with offerings of flowers, candles, and joss sticks.
Meanwhile, Buddhist Chief High Priest of Malaysia Datuk Dr K. Sri Dhammaratana expressed concern that modern society is drifting away from its spiritual and familial roots.
'Nowadays, society has changed, the spiritual feeling is fading away and the family feeling is fading away. I humbly would like to appeal to all parents to give their children at least the background and basic teachings of the great masters,' he said.
Wesak Day holds paramount importance for Buddhists, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism.
The festival is marked by the lighting of incense sticks and lotus-shaped candles, offering flowers, and the symbolic bathing of the Buddha statue. — Bernama

Pulau Pangkor Emerge As Largest Contributor To Anchovy landings In Perak Last Year
IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pulau Pangkor has emerged as the largest contributor to anchovy landings in Perak with a record of 2,844.44 tonnes worth RM42.67 million in 2024. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia said the achievement underscores the significant role of Pulau Pangkor in the country's fisheries industry, especially the anchovy fishing sector. "Nationally, the anchovy landings in Malaysia in 2024 totalled 14,589.20 tonnes valued at RM164.89 million, referring to the same species, Ikan Bilis/Bunga Air, as categorised in official records. "Among the main producing states are Sabah (5,956.17 tonnes), Perak (2,852.91 tonnes), Kedah (1,818.98 tonnes) and Kelantan (992.65 tonnes)," the statement said. The statement also stated that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, had earlier conducted a working visit to the anchovy industry area on Pulau Pangkor earlier today. According to the DOF statement, Pulau Pangkor currently has 694 vessels registered in various operational zones, namely Zone A (462 vessels), Zone B (44 vessels), Zone C (168 vessels) and Zone C2 (20 vessels) which allows the landing of various fish species, including anchovies. The statement further said that apart from anchovies, statistics also showed that among the top 10 species landed in Manjung Selatan in 2024 were pelaring, tongkol (skipjack tuna), tamban sisek, selayang, kembong (Indian mackerel), cincaru, selar, white shrimp and squid, with a total landing value of RM644.08 million. 'Pulau Pangkor also contributes to Perak's aquaculture sector with a production of 7,056.40 tonnes in 2024 through brackish water pond farming systems, cages, shellfish farming, freshwater ponds, hatcheries and freshwater ornamental fish farming across an area of over 1,264 hectares,' the statement said. Pulau Pangkor also remains an important location in the national fisheries industry with its strategic advantage as a centre for high-quality anchovy production which is a benchmark for the industry.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has issued a stern reminder to members of the Malaysian Armed Forces about the correct wearing of honour berets and badges on military uniforms. Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Parade of the Special Forces Regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor today, Sultan Ibrahim, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, said all berets and badges should reflect the wearer's actual skills, qualifications, and identity — not serve merely as decoration. 'For example, I myself completed Special Forces and parachute training at Fort Bragg, United States. Therefore, I am entitled to wear those badges on my uniform,' he said, according to a post on his official Facebook page. The King added a caution for those who have received honorary badges. 'If you are only an honorary recipient, the badge can only be worn at that specific event, not as a daily decoration. 'So, for those who are not entitled to wear them… you know what should be done. 'This morning, I am only issuing a mild reprimand, siapa yang makan cili, dia yang rasa pedas (if you eat chili, you must feel the heat).'
