Govt puts in place arrangements for incident-free Bahuda Yatra

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the recent stampede outside Gundicha Temple that left three devotees dead, the govt on Friday said comprehensive arrangements have been made for smooth management of Bahuda Yatra in Puri on Saturday.
The return journey will see Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra travel back from their birthplace at Gundicha Temple, where they had arrived during Rath Yatra. The deities are scheduled to enter Jagannath Temple on July 8 on the occasion of Niladri Bije.
"We anticipate crowd similar to Rath Yatra during Bahuda Yatra. No stone has been left unturned to ensure hassle-free conduct of the key festival," said Puri district collector Chanchal Rana, who along with SP Pinak Mishra were appointed by the govt on June 29, hours after the stampede deaths.
DGP Y B Khurania, who oversaw security arrangements in Puri on Friday, laid stress on effective crowd control. "We are fully prepared with our renewed crowd control, traffic and security arrangements. Officers who are assigned with specific duties have been instructed to remain extremely vigilant. We urge devotees to cooperate with us and adhere to traffic and crowd control protocols," Khurania said.
Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) held a series of meetings with servitors, highlighting timely completion of rituals.
CM Mohan Charan Majhi recently visited Puri and held a meeting with servitors, urging them to perform the rituals in a disciplined manner.
As per the temple administration, Pahandi ritual of the deities is scheduled to start at 12pm during which the idols would be escorted from the Gundicha Temple onto the chariots amid a musical procession. Pahandi ritual is scheduled to end around 2:30pm.
Puri king Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb is scheduled to perform his hereditary Chhera Pahanra ritual on the chariots between 2:30pm and 3:30pm.
The chariot pulling ceremony is scheduled to commence around 4pm.
On the eve of Bahuda Yatra, a large number of devotees thronged Gundicha Temple to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Sandhya Darshan on Friday. "There is a belief that darshan of the deities in Gundicha Temple on Sandhya Darshan is divine bliss. I cannot express my feelings," said Tanuja Mohapatra, a devotee from Bhubaneswar.

Iskcon Rath Yatra allowed in Anantapur with riders
VIJAYAWADA: The AP High Court on Friday made it clear that Iskcon Rath Yatra in Anantapur district, scheduled for July 5, can be held subject to restrictions imposed by police to ensure law and order. Since Muharram also falls on the same day, the court directed Iskcon representatives to strictly adhere to the conditions laid down by police to avoid any disruption to public peace. The division bench comprising Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Cheemalapati Ravi, issued orders noting that the matter pertains to sensitive law and order issue. Earlier, a single-judge bench had allowed Iskcon to conduct the Rath Yatra, but the police challenged that order through an appeal, citing concern over potential law and order problem as Muharram procession and Rath Yatra take place on the same route. The police informed the court that preparations for the Muharram procession would begin around 2.30 pm, and suggested that Rath Yatra be conducted between 10 am and 1 pm. However, Iskcon representatives stated that they planned to start Rath Yatra at 1 pm and cross the Old City by 2 pm. Taking note of the sensitive nature of the situation, the High Court said both events should take place under strict adherence to the conditions set by the police to ensure law and order.

BJD demands judicial probe into Rath Yatra ‘mess', stampede deaths
BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Friday demanded a judicial probe, monitored by a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court, into the mismanagement of Rath Yatra which led to the stampede near Gundicha temple and death of three devotees on June 29. In a memorandum submitted to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, a delegation of senior party leaders said the administrative inquiry ordered by development commissioner Anu Garg was grossly inadequate and not commensurate with the seriousness of the tragedy. They alleged that the Rath Yatra this year was marked by gross mismanagement in conduct of rituals as a result of which Nandighosha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, could not be pulled till 7.45 pm. The BJD leaders also demanded constitution of the managing committee of Shree Jagannath temple without further delay. 'The temple has been functioning without the statutory managing committee (MC) for the past eight months, disrupting key administrative and policy decisions. As mandated under the Shree Jagannath Temple Act, 1954, the MC is crucial for approving matters related to rituals, finance and temple management. Its absence has led to the mess and chaos,' they said. They also brought to the Governor's notice the severe traffic and crowd mismanagement during Rath Yatra and alleged that distribution of over 10,000 cordon passes by the ruling BJP to its supporters was the major cause behind the disruption. They urged the Governor to personally intervene and ensure that the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra are conducted smoothly.

Odisha BJP reluctant to defend party leader Jagannath Pradhan arrested for attack on govt. officer
The Bharatiya Janata Party in Odisha appears to be on the back foot over backing party leader Jagannath Pradhan, who was sent to 14-day judicial custody after his arrest for allegedly conspiring to attack a senior bureaucrat of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. The party has been reluctant to fully defend its leader, already grappling with a tarnished image following the death of three devotees in a stampede during the Rath Yatra and a spate of gang-rape incidents. The broad daylight assault on the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer by BJP workers further tied the party's hands. The situation worsened when OAS officers pushed back, demanding the arrest of Mr. Pradhan — whom they described as the prime accused and kingpin of the conspiracy — as a 'non-negotiable' condition. The mass leave by officers had crippled functioning of district and State level offices. At a time when the Mohan Majhi government was on n celebration spree, marking one year in office, these unsavoury developments forced the BJP to tread cautiously over its public image. On Wednesday (July 2, 2025), it briefly appeared that Mr. Pradhan — who had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from Bhubaneswar Central — had secured tacit support from the party after a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with top leadership at the party office, where he presented his version of events. However, within 24 hours, the leadership reconsidered. Party insiders said both the central and state units distanced themselves from Mr. Pradhan, concerned about further reputational damage. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik remained relentless in his attack on the ruling party, accusing it of presiding over a deteriorating law and order situation and mismanaging the Rath Yatra — the most revered festival for Odias. Bhubaneswar MP and BJP spokesperson Aparajita Sarangi further hardened her stance on the assault of a government official. 'It takes courage to admit a mistake. Had my own son been involved in the June 30 attack on a senior officer of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, I would have called the police to arrest him. It is our duty to remain humble and act with dignity,' she said. On July 1, Ms. Sarangi had strongly condemned the incident, stating she had never witnessed anything like it before. She asserted that the law must take its own course and called for strict punishment to ensure such acts are not repeated. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also said guilty would be punished. Senior ministers in Mohan Majhi Government were also seen reiterating similar line. Though State BJP immediately suspended five of its members including a corporator from the primary membership, it was yet to take a stand on Mr. Pradhan.
