First win for Gqeberha's Patrick Davidson in Air Race X

The Herald01-05-2025

SA Red Bull athlete and Gqeberha pilot Patrick Davidson claimed a spectacular victory in the first round of the Air Race X Championship, after a dominant performance where he defeated Japanese superstar Yoshi Muroya for the first time.
Representing Team 77, Davidson finished ahead of Muroya and Red Bull's Martin Šonka, who was third.
The opening round of the championship, a virtual round, sees eight elite pilots from six countries competing in high-performance aircraft and flying through AI-generated pylons, chasing time and precision, reaching speeds up to 400km/h, with the pilots being subjected to maximum gravitational forces of up to 12G.
In the quarterfinals, Davidson's time was excluded as he had exceeded the maximum allowable g-forces while performing his first sharp turn, caused by his on-board camera mount having shifted during the take-off and pressing against his trim button.
This resulted in extra trim being applied during the turn.
'The rule is that if you exceed 12Gs, for safety reasons, you have to land immediately and do an inspection of the aircraft, and you are normally excluded from the event as you have not yet set a time,' Davidson said.
'We went ahead and set times for the semifinal round, as well as the final round, with a relatively open mind, thinking that we were out of the running, but unbeknown to us, Australian pilot Emma McDonald was unable to log a time due to a technical problem on her aircraft and did not start.
'The rules state that should there be a non-starter, then the fastest qualifier takes priority, which luckily was us.
'Apologies to Emma, but it was lucky for us as we could push through and maintain the fast pace that saw us get through to the final against Yoshi, whom I managed to beat by more than a second, finishing in a time of 59.50.'
He used the Makhanda Airfield as his base for the event and set the fastest time in qualifying.
He then went on to rack up an impressive 33 points (25 race points, plus eight qualification points), placing him firmly at the top of the leader board and setting the tone for the rest of the championship.
'It's great to start the season on such a positive note and I hope to carry the momentum through to the next round,' Davidson said.
'I want to thank my team as well as my family for all of the support, and I look forward to the next round.'
This victory is a proud moment for SA aviation and showcases the talent, precision and dedication of the Red Bull team, as well as the various partners who are supporting Davidson.
The next round of the four-event championship is on July 6.

Cricket legends praise Proteas captain Temba Bavuma after WTC triumph

Cricket legends, including Matthew Hayden and Sachin Tendulkar, praised Proteas captain Temba Bavuma for leading his team to victory in the ICC World Test Championship. On Saturday, South Africa defeated Australia by 5 wickets, claiming their first ICC title in 27 years. Chasing a target of 282 for victory, the Proteas began their run chase positively on Day 3, with conditions favoring the batting side. A strong partnership of 147 runs between Bavuma and Aiden Markram brought South Africa within reach of the target. David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne then guided the Proteas to a memorable win at Lord's in the WTC final. During the chase, Bavuma played through a hamstring injury on Day 3, hobbling between runs but managing to score 66 runs. Markram was the standout performer, finishing with a memorable century. Australian legend Matthew Hayden was particularly complimentary of Bavuma's leadership during Proteas' chase. 'What a champion effort. You could see early doors he was struggling with his hamstring, but he hung in there,' Hayden, who was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame last week, told Cricinfo . 'He played really good simple cricket.' India's greatest batsman of all-time Sachin Tendulkar praised both Bavuma and Markram for their match winning knocks. 'Test cricket continues to weave its magic,' he said on X. 'In a final where every session had its own story, Proteas found calm in the storm. Markram's composure and Bavuma's grit under pressure stood tall in the fourth innings. A century that will be remembered, a partnership that turned hope into history. Congratulations to South Africa on becoming World Test Champions!' McKenzie kicks Chiefs to Super Rugby semi-final win over Brumbies

Damian McKenzie kicked the Waikato Chiefs into a third successive Super Rugby Pacific final, punishing the ACT Brumbies for their indiscipline in a 37-17 semi-final win on Saturday. Both teams scored three tries in Hamilton but fly-half McKenzie landed eight shots from nine, including six penalty goals, in a 22-point haul as the Chiefs booked a place in next week's final against the Canterbury Crusaders. The Crusaders beat the Auckland Blues 21-14 on Friday and are seeking their eighth title in nine seasons. The Chiefs have not won the title since 2013, having lost in the final the past two seasons. All Blacks sharpshooter McKenzie was at the heart of a clinical Chiefs display, setting up two tries and saving one when he held up Brumbies fullback Tony Wright over the line. "Outstanding performance from the lads. Obviously the Brumbies came out of the blocks fast, like we knew they would, and I just loved the way we were really composed," the 30-year-old told Sky Sport. "When we got in their 22 we managed to come away with points most of the time, so very pleasing." The Brumbies lost Wallabies fly-half Noah Lolesio, who failed a head injury assessment in the opening minutes and was replaced by Jack Debreczeni. They soon had a one-man advantage when Chiefs lock Tupou Vaa'i was shown a yellow card for a high tackle and capitalised with a try by hooker Billy Pollard from a lineout drive. The Chiefs responded with a clever try by winger Emoni Narawa, who scampered through at the base of a ruck to score. McKenzie converted and then landed all four of his penalty shots before the interval, with the Brumbies pushing too hard for turnovers at the breakdown. The visitors scored a second try before the break when Debreczeni picked out winger Corey Toole with a cross kick to trail 19-12. Toole crossed again through a fine solo try soon after the restart to close within two points. Narawa bagged his second following a break from McKenzie, who kicked two more penalties and threw the last pass to put replacement back Josh Jacomb over for their final score. "We had to play close to a perfect game to come over here and get the result," Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa said. "We probably saw in the second half that our accuracy let us down and, off the back of that, probably our discipline as well." Saturday's decider in Christchurch will be the fourth successive all-New Zealand final since Super Rugby Pacific launched in 2022. The Brumbies have lost in the semi-finals in each of those seasons. No Australian team has won a play-off match in New Zealand in 21 attempts.

How much money the Proteas will bank after beating Aussies in Test final

The playing squad and coaching team will be smiling all the way to the bank. Picture: Glyn Kirk / AFP The World Test Championship-winning Proteas squad haven't only become the best Test team on the planet and written their names in the history books, they've also bagged a pot of gold, after beating Australia in the final at Lord's on Saturday. Temba Bavuma and his Proteas squad beat the Australian side of Pat Cummins by five wickets in the Test final, following a thrilling four days of cricket in London. While Bavuma and Co's names will go down in history as the first senior Proteas team to win a major ICC trophy of significance, and since the victory in the Champions Trophy in 1998, they will also bank large cheques from the International Cricket Council in the coming days. Winners' purse The ICC announced before the final at Lord's that the winners of the match would take home a purse of $3.6 million. In Rand terms that is a little less than R65 million. It is more than double ($1.6 million) what New Zealand (2021) and Australia (2023) earned after winning the previous two Test finals. Australia, as runners-up will bank $2.1 million, which is R38 million. This is also significantly more than what the previous runners-up took home, namely $800,000. The playing squads and coaching staffs are expected to split the winnings between them. Aiden Markram of the Proteas was named man of the match for his excellent score of 136 in the second innings, which helped South Africa reach their target of 282. He was ably supported in the run chase by Bavuma, who hit an excellent 66. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada also starred for the Proteas, taking nine wickets in the match.
