Late defensive disaster by Mets hands Dodgers 6-5 comeback win in jaw-dropping turnaround

The New York Mets were just five outs away from closing out a win against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night. Instead, they found themselves the punchline of a bizarre eighth-inning collapse that turned a promising lead into a deflating 6-5 loss at Dodger Stadium.
Dodgers stage dramatic comeback as Mets unravel in 8th with game-altering misplay
It all unraveled with the Mets clinging to a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Reed Garrett had seemingly done his job when Andy Pages chopped a routine ground ball to Brett Baty at third. With Will Smith breaking from third, it should've been an easy out at home. But Baty's throw spiked into the dirt, catcher Francisco Alvarez couldn't handle it cleanly, and what followed looked more like slapstick than baseball. As the ball popped into the air, Alvarez collided with Garrett in a chaotic moment better suited for a blooper reel.
Had Alvarez not unintentionally boxed Garrett out while scrambling for the ball, Smith might still have been caught. Instead, he tied the game, and the Dodgers were far from done.

Three batters later, former Met Michael Conforto returned to haunt his old team. Conforto, who had been enduring a brutal season at the plate, stepped up with two outs and delivered a clutch RBI single — his first hit with runners in scoring position since March 31 and his first with two outs all season.

The $17 million man finally made good on a big moment, giving Los Angeles a 6-5 lead.
Will Smith had already set the tone for the inning with an RBI double, and Mookie Betts contributed as well, reaching base four times and lacing a double earlier in the night.
Tanner Scott, another recent Dodgers acquisition trying to find his footing, came in to close the ninth. He allowed a single but kept his composure, striking out two and sealing the win with a Luisangel Acuña flyout — earning his 11th save of the season.
Despite their injury-riddled pitching rotation, the Dodgers split the four-game series with the Mets and remained atop the NL West at 38-25. Their 9-7 record during this grueling stretch — which included the Guardians, Diamondbacks, Yankees, and Mets — speaks volumes about their resilience.
Meanwhile, the Mets dropped only their third game in the last 12. But this one will sting. Plays like these don't just cost games — they echo louder in a franchise still fighting to shed its old reputation.

Dodgers vs Cardinals game delayed by weather on June 6: Here's what fans need to know now
Rain disrupts Dodgers vs Cardinals clash: Updated start time and latest details from the ballpark (Getty Images) The Los Angeles Dodgers were set to kick off a pivotal six-game road trip on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals, but Mother Nature had other plans. Rain in the forecast has delayed the series opener at Busch Stadium, and no new start time has been confirmed. Originally scheduled for 5:15 p.m. PT (8:15 p.m. ET), the game now sits in limbo, leaving fans from both sides in suspense. Rain delay halts Dodgers vs Cardinals game The Dodgers are entering this road series leading the National League West, but the tight division race means there's little room for error. Every inning, every hit, every pitch matters — and this matchup with the Cardinals, despite the delay, is loaded with intrigue. On the mound for St. Louis is veteran right-hander Sonny Gray, who has been mostly solid this season with a 6-1 record and 3.65 ERA, striking out 76 batters. Despite some recent home run struggles, Gray has found a rhythm lately, posting a sharp 2.08 ERA across his last two starts. His challenge? Navigating the gauntlet that is the Dodgers lineup — a task few pitchers envy. With sluggers like Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts, the Dodgers can flip a game on its head in seconds. L.A. will counter with left-hander Justin Wrobleski, a rookie still finding his groove in the majors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Small Electric Car for Seniors in Iraq: Prices That Will Surprise You Electric Cars | Search Ads Undo Wrobleski brings an 8.00 ERA across his first two games, and though that might seem like a favorable matchup for St. Louis, the Cardinals have had their share of struggles against southpaws this season. The Dodgers' lineup will also see a few tweaks. Will Smith gets a rest day behind the plate, while Hyeseong Kim remains out due to a foot injury. Manager Dave Roberts assured that an IL stint isn't required. Catching duties will go to rookie Dalton Rushing, who will work with Wrobleski in what could be a pivotal performance for both. The night also carries emotional weight, as Tommy Edman returns to Busch Stadium for the first time since last season's blockbuster trade. The 2023 NLCS MVP, now wearing Dodger blue, didn't play for the Cardinals in 2024 due to a wrist injury, making this his first appearance in St. Louis in over a year. Stay tuned as the skies clear — there's a lot more brewing than just rain in St. Louis tonight. Also Read: Late defensive disaster by Mets hands Dodgers 6-5 comeback win in jaw-dropping turnaround
