‘Risky Routes' Shows How Roads Threaten Migratory Toads

Bloomberg18-07-2025
It's a dangerous journey for the hero of the short film Risky Routes: To cross the road, a determined toad has to avoid getting squished by cars speeding past. And as it inches forward ahead of an oncoming vehicle, its fate appears to be all but sealed — until a savior arrives and scoops up the amphibian.
Risky Routes is the winner of Bloomberg's Green Docs competition for films addressing the urgency of climate change. The film sheds light on the plight of migratory toads, whose annual journey to their breeding grounds is disrupted by our modern infrastructure, while their natural habitats are threatened by pollution and drought. But this film is 'not a sad story,' filmmakers say. It also highlights the work of volunteers trying to protect the animals, writes Olivia Rudgard. Watch the film today on CityLab:

Dance Poles and Leopard-Print Walls: Love Motels Ready Rooms for Climate Summit

The suite, with its crisp white sheets and tiny soaps, could almost pass for any no-frills hotel room. That is, if it weren't for the mirrored ceilings and the dance pole by the bed. The décor of Motel Secreto, on the fringes of the Brazilian city of Belém, normally serves as a backdrop for lunch-hour trysts, clandestine affairs and passion-struck lovers seeking a few hours of privacy away from cramped family homes. But the love motel, like others across Belém, is now preparing rooms that range from the sensual to the raunchy for a different kind of guest: diplomats and climate scientists, civil servants and environmental activists, all descending on the city in November for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP30. 'We're taking out anything too erotic from the rooms,' said Yorann Costa, 30, the owner of Motel Secreto, Portuguese for 'Secret Motel.' 'And the location is perfect.' Want all of The Times? How YouTube and Tiktok Are Shaping a New Generation of Chefs

Just as athletes watch training videos to improve performance, chefs can now access a vast library on YouTube to hone their craft. After the Food Network premiered 30 years later, home cooks picked up countless tips from the likes of Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay. Today almost every social media platform has a wealth of instruction geared toward home cooks (especially if their goal is to get dinner on the table in five minutes using even fewer ingredients). YouTube has become an increasingly useful resource for professional chefs who know what to look for. In recent years, it's also helped skilled amateurs earn culinary reputations and even open their own restaurants. Bloomberg Pursuits Food Editor Kate Krader and Bloomberg Pursuits Editor Chris Rovzar join Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss this and more. (Source: Bloomberg)
