ANALYSIS: Plenty to be proud of in banner year for Jets, MVP Hellebuyck
It's been 27 days since the Winnipeg Jets' season ended.
That was the day of Game 6 against Dallas. Who can forget everything that surrounded that last game, including the heroic appearance of Mark Scheifele, whose father died in the early hours of that Saturday? And now, here we are, in the middle of June, the Stanley Cup final is now a best-of-three, going back to Edmonton. And while there are only two teams remaining in this season, Thursday was a great day for the Jets and Connor Hellebuyck.

That should be Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck.
There is little doubt that the announcement of Hellebuyck winning the best goaltender award was a given, but to add the most valuable player award marks Thursday, June 12, as the greatest individual day for any member of the Jets.

As an aside, the Vezina is voted on by the NHL general managers. The Hart is voted on by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. And in the world's greatest team sport, individual awards are often very hard to measure. They can be very subjective. But not this year, not with these two trophies. These awards are a tribute to Hellebuyck's regular-season success, which also included the Jennings Trophy as the best statistical goaltender in the NHL: 47 wins, a 2.00 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage and eight shutouts — key stats that helped the Jets to the best regular season in the NHL.

In so many ways, it's a season that hockey fans in the province should never forget. And numbers that the Jets goaltender will call his most successful career numbers to date. Also add No. 37 being named to the NHL's first all-star team — along with teammate Kyle Connor, by the way — and Thursday was a banner day for the Jets.
For Hellebuyck, the team and Jets fans everywhere, the Vezina Trophy, the Hart Trophy and the first all-star team are satisfactory consolation prizes for not playing in the Stanley Cup final.
They aren't the ultimate prize, but they are reminders that this season was not completely a lost cause. There is plenty to be proud of.

Las Vegas Grand Prix extended through 2027 after a roller-coaster start
The Las Vegas Grand Prix received a two-year contract extension that keeps the race that runs down the iconic Strip on the calendar through 2027. Las Vegas was added to the F1 schedule in 2023 on a three-year contract but with commitment from casino partners and a 10-year approval from Clark County for the race to take place along the Strip. Las Vegas was on the 2026 calendar announced earlier this week even though the extension wasn't revealed until Saturday at the Canadian Grand Prix. Emily Prazer, the president of the Las Vegas Grand Prix and chief commercial officer of F1, said the plans are to extend the race long into the future. 'We want to make sure that we're continuing to evolve what we're doing. But the intent is a much longer-term arrangement,' Prazer said. 'As we all know, the race has had its challenges, but we're coming out the other side. So we want to make sure that it continues to work for both sides.' Las Vegas has had a roller-coaster start to its F1 presence as the inaugural race was bogged down by high ticket and hotel prices, then a loose water valve cover that damaged Carlos Sainz's Jr. car in the first practice. The valve cover caused a lengthy delay for track inspection and fans were forced to exit the venue ahead of second practice, which ran until 4 a.m. In the end, the race was one of the best of the season. Calvin Pickard to start in goal for Oilers in Game 5 of Stanley Cup final
EDMONTON – Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard will get the start in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final Saturday night. The 32-year-old is set to face the Florida Panthers after making 23 saves off the bench in Edmonton's dramatic 5-4 overtime victory Thursday that evened the best-of-seven title series 2-2. The flat, uninspired Oilers trailed 3-0 after an ugly first period — Stuart Skinner allowed three goals on 17 shots, but also made some massive stops — before Pickard took over to start the second. Edmonton came to life and rallied to lead 4-3 with under seven minutes to go in the third, but Florida tied things late to force OT. Leon Draisaitl's deflected pass off the rush then beat Panthers netminder Sergei Bobrovsky for his second extra-time goal of the series, and record-breaking fourth of the playoffs, after he also ended Game 1.
