Tamil Nadu Quarry Blast Triggers Deadly Rockslide, Kills Five Workers
A tragic accident occurred on May 20, 2025, at a stone quarry in Mallakottai, Singampunari, within Tamil Nadu's Sivagangai district, where five workers were killed in a rockslide. The workers, who were 450 feet inside the quarry, were struck by falling rocks triggered by a powerful blast, resulting in their immediate deaths. Two other workers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to Madurai for medical treatment. The deceased were identified as Muruganandham, Arumugam, Ganesan, Andisamy, and Harshit, an Odisha native.
Tamil Nadu Minister KR Periyakarupan of the DMK, along with district officials, visited the site to supervise the rescue efforts. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced financial aid, providing Rs 4 lakh to the families of each deceased worker and Rs 1 lakh for the injured worker, Michael, who is under treatment.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy in May of the previous year at a stone quarry in Virudhunagar's Kariapatti area, where an explosion in a storage room containing explosives claimed several lives, as captured on CCTV. Local communities have repeatedly voiced concerns about safety violations at the quarry, including frequent accidents involving overloaded trucks. The quarry had been temporarily shut down prior to that explosion, and following the latest incident, residents are now demanding its permanent closure.

Over 6k fined for travelling without ticket
1 2 Patna: Samastipur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) on Wednesday conducted a massive ticket-checking drive, detaining a total of 6,383 passengers travelling without valid tickets across key stations. The drive resulted in a collection of Rs 52.47 lakh as fine from them, said Samastipur divisional railway manager (DRM) Vinay Srivastava. According to Srivastava, a total of 218 ticket-checking staff were deployed as part of the intensified drive, which aimed to ensure a smoother journey for passengers, especially travelling in reserved coaches of long-distance mail and express trains. "The campaign, led under the directive of the ECR headquarters in Hajipur, was described as one of the most comprehensive ticket-checking efforts in the recent years in the division," he said, adding that the drive was carried out from 6am to 9pm at Samastipur, Bapudham Motihari, Narkatiaganj, Saharsa, Banmankhi, Jaynagar, Raxaul, Darbhanga, Purnia Court, Supaul and Saraigarh stations.

SC junks plea of conman Sukeshs wife for expeditious bail hearing
Last Updated: New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court has rejected the plea of Leena Paulose, wife of alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar, in a Rs 200 crore extortion case for an expeditious hearing of her bail plea in Delhi High Court. A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan observed her bail application was pending before the Delhi High Court and said, 'Considering that the bail petition is partly heard before the high court and is now posted for further arguments on July 2, 2025, we are not inclined to entertain this special leave petition. The special leave petition is, accordingly, dismissed." The top court on Wednesday added, 'It is expected that the High Court shall dispose the bail petition pending before it at the earliest and in accordance with law." Paulose moved the top court against a May 19 order of the high court, which posted her plea in July. Delhi Police has booked Chandrashekar for allegedly duping the wives of former promoters of Ranbaxy Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore. Several separate investigations against him in the country are currently underway. Chandrasekhar and Paulose, who are also facing proceedings in a money laundering case of the Enforcement Directorate, were arrested by Delhi Police in the extortion case. Three Naxalites with ₹19 lakh bounty surrender in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur
Three Naxals, including two women -- carrying a collective cash reward of Rs 19 lakh on their heads -- have surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, citing disillusionment with "hollow" Maoist ideology and exploitation of tribals, police said on Thursday. One of the Naxals, identified as Bhima alias Dinesh Podiam (40), turned himself in on Wednesday, while the two women cadres, Sukli Korram alias Sapna and Devli Mandavi (22), surrendered on Tuesday before authorities, an official said. The trio surrendered before senior police and CRPF officials in Narayanpur citing disillusionment with "hollow" and "inhuman" Maoist ideology, exploitation of innocent tribals by senior cadres and increasing influence of security forces in the Bastar region, he said. While Bhima, who was active as a company party member in east Bastar division of Maoists, carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh, Sukli, a platoon party committee member, and Devli, a janmilitia member, were carrying bounty of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, the official informed. The women cadres were active in Abhujmad and Partapaur (Kanker) areas, he said. "The Narayanpur police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Border Security Force (BSF) have played a crucial role in their surrender. The development has caused a huge loss to the top Maoist cadres. The dream of a Naxal-free Abhujmaad (once a Maoist stronghold) through 'Maad bacaho abhiyaan' (save Maad drive) is taking real shape," Narayanpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar said. All the surrendered Naxalites were provided instant assistance of Rs 50,000 each and they will be rehabilitated as per the government's policy, he added. Multiple benefits included in the government's new rehabilitation policy are persuading Naxalites to quit the outlawed movement, said the SSP. "Time has come for all Naxalite brothers and sisters to come out of the misleading ideology of outsiders. Now is the time to hand over 'Maad' back to its original residents where they can live a normal life without any fear," Kumar emphasised. With these surrenders, a total of 104 Naxalites have quit the armed movement led by the outlawed CPI (Maoist) so far this year in Narayanpur district. Last year, 792 Naxalites had surrendered in the Bastar region comprising seven districts, including Narayanpur.
