Ian Dempsey recalls his day working on Live Aid

RTÉ News4 days ago
Former 2fm DJ and current Today FM breakfast show host Ian Dempsey worked behind the scenes on RTÉ's award-winning TV coverage of Live Aid. He shares some memories of the day
What was your role on the day?
"Along with my colleagues, I was 'manning' the phones (a term which probably doesn't exist 40 years later) with fellow presenter Barry Lang and Broadcasting Assistant Linda Bent.
"Our job was to chat, flirt and secure plenty of cash from a very willing public. What a great day it was. We were also simulcasting on Radio 2 (now 2FM) so there was no escape for anybody!"
Were you there for the whole thing?
"No. As I remember it, we each had to do a shift of about three hours over in the TV Block. I was there from about midday until 3pm so early enough and I drove straight home afterwards and went into a darkened room with the television on and watched every microsecond until about 3am the next day."
Live Aid was a HUGE live event with a lot of moving parts and a lot going on so lots of chances for cock-ups - were there many during RTÉ's coverage?
"To be fair to the Donnybrook end of things, it was plain sailing as far as I could see. I suppose they had very little control over the actual music, the feeds, the satellites etc so it was just a case of filling in the spaces whenever necessary. Of course, there was an amazing 'can do' attitude with everybody involved and that usually helps things run both smoothly and brilliantly."
What were your highlights - musical and otherwise?
"I think that pocket of Live Aid in the late afternoon in London which featured separate performances by U2 (landscape changing for Bono), Queen (21 minutes of excellence - no debate) and David Bowie (well, what did we expect?) - but it has to be said that Status Quo at midday kicking it all off with the most appropriate song ever was a bit special - Rocking All Over The World."
What were your lowlights - musical and otherwise?
"I thought the American end was less good but maybe I was just tired. It didn't seem to have the same oomph! Although, I did enjoy The Thompson Twins with Madonna."
Did you get the feeling early on in the day that Ireland would end up contributing the most per capita than any other county?
"Well, Ireland has a brilliant record at helping others. I knew it would be an impressive total from the response that we got on the phones. It was non-stop!"
Was it an emotional experience for you?
"Yes, I think it was something the whole world could come together for and it proved the power of people when we all felt passionately about the issues in Ethiopia. And the fact that Bob Geldof, a lad from South County Dublin, was putting the fear of God into rock stars, TV viewers and donors made it all extra emotional."
What do you think Live Aid's legacy is?
"It was a unique event that will never happen again. Everybody was caught on the hop and the outcome was unbelievable."

Who is Azealia Banks? The woman at the centre of Conor McGregor nude pic scandal

Nude pictures of Conor McGregor appeared on social media on Monday afternoon after being shared by a woman who claims the Irish MMA star sent her unsolicited naked images. The woman at the centre of the storm is American rapper Azealia Banks. The 34-year-old took to X on Monday to share the snaps of McGregor with her followers on the social media platform. Banks claims McGregor sent her the two images via her X (formerly Twitter) account. Banks, who does not follow McGregor on the social media app then took screenshots of the images and shared them with her 260k followers on X. "'How you gonna send a b**** a some crooked d*** pics then threaten her not to tell,' she wrote alongside the screenshots. '@TheNotoriousMMA n**** do you know who the f*** I am? This is HARAM'," said Banks. She continued: "Like how are you really going to sexually harrass me with the potato farmer d*** then threaten me not to tell???? Honey…… ain't u trying to be the president of Ireland what is it giving fam? Use some f***ing sunscreen damn." Banks also appeared to share a screenshot of a message she received from McGregor where he appears to be telling her not to share the images. "Don't be a rat cos all rats get caught", reads the message. Conor McGregor Surprisingly, a few hours later, Banks, posted on X saying she and McGregor have been sending each other unsolicited nudes since 2016. Who is Azealia Banks? Azealia Banks is an American musician who primarily produces rap music. She was born in New York City in May 1991 and is 34-years-old. Banks was something of a prodigy growing up and starred in a production of 'City of Angels' when she was just a teenager. She began releasing her music on social media site Myspace and eventually caught the attention of music producers at XL recordings. Banks has released one studio album 'Broke with expensive taste' which reached number two in the US Rap charts upon its release in 2014. McGregor's response As of yet, McGregor has not officially responded to Banks' social media posts. Nor has he made comment on a separate story that broke over the weekend where the Irishman - who is engaged to Dee Devlin - was snapped kissing a bikini-clad mystery woman on a Florida beach. Images of McGregor, who is engaged to long-term partner Devlin with whom he has four children, that appear to show him kissing a mystery woman on a beach in Florida, emerged on Monday. The photographs appear to show McGregor wearing nothing but luminous green swimming shorts embracing a dark-haired bikini clad woman while sitting on a sun lounger on the beach. Breaking his silence, McGregor took to X to post: "Happy Birthday to me!" as he celebrates turning 37-years-old.

Conor McGregor reacts with 4 word message to mystery woman & nude pics scandals

Conor McGregor has broken his silence over apparent images of him kissing a mystery woman on a beach in the USA and allegedly sending unsolicited nude photos of himself to Amercian rapper, Azealia Banks. Images of McGregor, who is engaged to long-term partner, Dee Devlin, that appear to show him kissing a mystery woman on a beach in Florida, emerged on Monday. The photographs appear to show McGregor wearing nothing but luminous green swimming shorts embracing a dark-haired bikini clad woman while sitting on a sun lounger on the beach. A few hours after the images of McGregor on the beach with the woman emerged, news broke that the 37 year-old former UFC had allegedly sent unsolicited completely nude photographs of himself to American rapper, Azealia Banks. Banks, 34, claims McGregor sent her the two images via her X (formerly Twitter) account. Banks, who does not follow McGregor on the social media app then took screenshots of the images and shared them with her 260k followers on X. Hours later, McGregor, who turned 37 on Monday, broke his silence on social media with a four word message. "Happy birthday to me!" the Crumlin native posted on X. Conor McGregor with his fiancee Dee Devlin (Image: Getty Images) Conor McGregor and Dee Devlin At the time of publishing this article, McGregor's four word response had been viewed more than 10million times and there was a mixed reaction. "Double champ does what he wants," replied American mixed martial artist and friend of McGregors, Dillon Danis. "In all seriousness you can't be sending random celebrities nudes if you actually want to be president of Ireland. Focus up," said on US follower. Another man said: "Happy Birthday Notorious and May God bless you with many more!" A third person referring to McGregor's fiancée, Dee Devlin, said: "Conor McGregor's partner must've decided that the lifestyle is worth it for the constant public humiliation." Conor McGregor and partner Dee Devlin leave the High Court in Dublin in November 2024. (Image: Brian Lawless/PA) McGregor has been out of action since his loss to Poirier (Image: Getty Images) Last November, a High Court civil jury found McGregor civilly liable for assaulting Nikita Hand. He faced allegations of "brutally raping and battering" Ms Hand at a hotel in south Dublin back in November 2018. McGregor maintained that their sexual interactions at the Beacon Hotel were consensual. The jury sided with her, with €248,603.60 in damages awarded. McGregor has mounted an appeal against the ruling that got underway earlier this month. McGregor has now been absent from the UFC for over four years. His last fight, a second successive defeat to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, saw him break his leg.
