Sensex surges over 1,000 points as investors cheer easing of tensions in Middle East
The Indian stock market witnessed a sharp surge on Tuesday, with the Sensex soaring more than 1,000 points in early trade, while the Nifty reclaimed the 25,250 mark.
A sudden easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a steep drop in crude oil prices sparked a wave of buying across sectors, lifting overall market sentiment.
The Sensex opened at 82,534.61, higher than its previous close of 81,896.79, and rallied over 1 per cent to hit an intra-day high of 82,937.
The Nifty, too, opened strong at 25,179.90, up from 24,971.90, and touched a high of 25,287.65.
Broader markets joined the rally, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices climbing over 1 per cent.
The upbeat mood was reflected in market capitalisation as well, with the total value of BSE-listed companies rising by nearly Rs 5 lakh crore in the first few minutes of trading -- from Rs 448 lakh crore to almost Rs 453 lakh crore.
By around 12:35 P.M., the Sensex was trading 850.02 points higher at 82,746, up 1.04 per cent, while the Nifty was up 262 points, or 1.05 per cent, at 25,233.9.
Market experts attributed the sudden rally to the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
US President Donald Trump shared on his Truth Social platform that both nations had agreed to a complete halt in hostilities after 12 days of conflict.
His announcement boosted investor confidence across global markets. The ceasefire also triggered a sharp fall in crude oil prices -- Brent Crude, which hovered near $80 per barrel in the previous session, crashed nearly 3 per cent to trade below $70.
This decline came as a relief to Indian investors, since lower crude prices help reduce inflationary pressures and support growth in an oil-import-dependent economy like India.
With tensions easing, global investors moved away from safe-haven assets such as gold and the US dollar and shifted back to equities.
In India, this shift helped the stock market recover from recent losses and led to broad-based buying across sectors.
MCX Gold prices fell over 1 per cent in morning trade, and the dollar index also declined by nearly half a per cent.

‘Victory for India': Muslim cleric praises Operation Sindhu amid Iran-Israel conflict escalation
New Delhi: Amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, prominent Muslim cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi has praised the Indian government's swift response in evacuating its citizens from the war-hit region under 'Operation Sindhu'. Speaking to IANS from Bareilly, Razvi lauded the efforts, calling it a "victory for India" and a reminder of the government's commitment to protect its people. "Many Indian students and others were stranded in Iran for studies or pilgrimage. Their families were deeply distressed. The successful evacuation has brought immense relief to parents and relatives. We must appreciate the Indian government for taking timely action," Razvi said. Meanwhile, in a separate and strongly worded statement, Maulana Razvi targeted actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh for the casting of Pakistani actors, including Hania Amir, in his upcoming film 'Sardaar Ji 3'. He questioned the rationale behind choosing Pakistani talent, particularly at a time when tensions with Pakistan remain high. "Why couldn't Diljit find Indian actors? Why give opportunities to those from a country that harbours terrorists and has caused immense pain to India?" Razvi said, referencing the 26 Indian civilians killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, which was planned by Pakistan-based terror groups. "This film sends the wrong message to Indian society", he noted. Razvi further recalled India's strong retaliation in the form of 'Operation Sindoor', which targeted terror infrastructure deep inside Pakistan. Calling for a boycott of 'Sardaar Ji 3', Razvi urged the Indian government to ban the film and initiate legal action against Diljit Dosanjh and the involved actors. "This isn't just about a movie; it's about national sentiment and respect for our martyrs," he said. 'Sardaar Ji 3' is set to release on June 27 and features popular Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, whose casting has stirred criticism on social media due to the recent Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Notably, India had implemented a ban on Pakistani actors and content on various platforms, including OTT services and social media, citing national security concerns during Operation Sindoor.

Pappu Yadav likens current political climate to ‘undeclared Emergency'
New Delhi: On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency -- widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy -- Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav strongly criticised the current political climate, likening it to an "undeclared Emergency." Speaking to IANS on Tuesday, Yadav took aim at the ruling BJP, asserting that the present situation mirrors the authoritarianism of the past, albeit without formal declaration. Attacking the ruling dispensation, he said that institutions like the "Supreme Court, ED, CBI, and Election Commission are all working at the BJP's behest. No one can speak now." Training his guns at the BJP on the issue of black money, he said that the BJP does not want to talk about real issues. "Just look at the BJP on its record of employment generation, have they delivered their promise on giving two crore jobs?" he asked. "What is the update on the handling of Agniveers? Our currency is going down compared to the dollar. Have you brought back the black money?" he told IANS. On speculation over Arvind Kejriwal's entry into the Rajya Sabha, Yadav accused him of prioritising personal ambition over governance. He further alleged that Kejriwal is desperately eyeing a Rajya Sabha seat and could even replace Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to fulfil his political goals. "He is obsessed with money and power. Corruption runs in his veins," Yadav said, calling Kejriwal the 'B team' of the BJP. Yadav claimed Kejriwal imposed elections in Punjab for selfish reasons and said the AAP leader now lives in a 'delusional world.' 'He made Delhiites suffer, failed to deliver on Lokpal, and now dreams of entering Rajya Sabha through the backdoor,' Yadav alleged. On the BJP's continuous attack on Congress, Yadav called Union Home Minister Amit Shah the 'Sankat Mochak' of the BJP but questioned his relentless attacks on the Congress. 'Every party is free to contest on their terms. But if you had taken the name of God as many times as you've taken the name of Congress, Nehru, or Indira, maybe God would have blessed you,' he said. Yadav reminded Home Minister Amit Shah of Indira Gandhi's contributions to the nation, calling her one of the most dynamic leaders the world has seen. "Atal Bihari Vajpayee had called her 'Durga.' Don't forget 1971 and her leadership. Yes, Emergency was dark, and people punished her -- but then people brought her back, too. Let the people decide,' he added. On the Iran-Israel conflict, Yadav accused the US of forcing a ceasefire. 'Iran is our historical ally, and we must introspect. Trump's actions have surpassed Hitler,' he said, warning that war is being used as a business model by global arms dealers.

India-US deal to produce F-414 jet engines likely by March: HAL Chief Sunil
The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will seal a deal with US defence major GE Aerospace by March to jointly produce a jet engine to power the next generation of India's combat aircraft, the aviation behemoth's chief DK Sunil has said. The mega plan to jointly produce the F-414 engines in India was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington DC in 2023, though the programme suffered from several slippages because of protracted negotiations on the sharing of advanced technologies. In an exclusive interview with PTI Videos, HAL Chairman and Managing Director Sunil said crucial negotiations with GE Aerospace on the transfer of technologies for the engines were concluded and both sides are now focusing on the commercial aspects of the project. "We are now discussing the ToT (transfer of technologies) principles. (We will have) 80 per cent transfer of technology. Those discussions are more or less over," he said. "Now we will be getting into the commercials. So, in this financial year, we should be able to conclude this deal," he said. The forward movement in joint production of the premier engines, which are powering combat jets in several countries including the US, Sweden and Australia, is seen as very significant considering the long-held US policy of maintaining strict controls over domestic military technologies. Sunil said the GE engines will be used in the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mark 2 variant and the initial prototypes of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). "We are having regular rounds of discussions with GE Aerospace," he said. The F-414 project under the technology transfer framework is crucial for India's ambitious Tejas programme as well as the AMCA project. The HAL is working on the Tejas Mark 2 variant which will be a much more potent platform featuring a more powerful engine, greater load carrying capability, superior electronic warfare system and an array of advanced avionics. The IAF is procuring around 180 Tejas Mark 1A variants at a cost of around Rs 1.15 lakh crore. The single-engine Mk-1A will be a replacement for the IAF's MiG-21 fighters. India also has been working on the ambitious AMCA project to develop the medium-weight deep penetration fighter jet with advanced stealth features to bolster its air power capability. AMCA along with the Tejas light combat aircraft are planned to be the mainstays of the Indian Air Force. Sunil also talked about HAL winning a mega contract to supply Prachand helicopters to the Indian military. In March, the defence ministry firmed up the procurement of 156 light combat helicopter 'Prachand' from the HAL at a cost of Rs 62,700 crore to bolster the combat capability of the military. The HAL top executive said delivery of Prachand will commence in 2028. Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand is India's first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter having capability of operating at an altitude of over 4500 metres. "It is the biggest contract in India's military history. We produced 15 limited series productions (variants of the chopper) and delivered them. It is a very big shot in the arm for 'aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in the defence sector," Sunil said. The whole attack helicopters are going to be made by HAL within the country and that platform will feature an array of weapons including rockets and anti-tank guided missiles.
