Nanaimo country singer Cameron Whitcomb has topped the nominations list at the 2025 Canadian Country Music Awards with nods in six categories including entertainer, songwriter and male artist of the year.
Whitcomb is tied with Waterdown, Ont., singer Josh Ross, who also has six nominations.
Ross recently apologized to fans after facing criticism for calling the U.S. 'the best country in the world'. He and Whitcomb are up against each other in three categories.
Whitcomb, whose career kicked off when he began posting videos of himself singing on Reddit, was spotted by an American Idol producer who invited him to audition for the program. Whitcomb competed on Season 20 of Idol in 2022, reaching the top 20 before being eliminated. The experience led him to decide to pursue a music career.
He released his debut single Shoot Me Dead in 2023, inking a deal with Atlantic Records. His 2024 single Quitter was serviced to radio in Australia, Canada and the U.K., where it received favourable reviews. He has been steadily touring across North America over the past two years, building a solid fan base for his high-energy live show.
Whitcomb's most recent EP Options was released on March 17. It includes singles such as the rocking Gasoline & Matches, and Bad Apple.
Other B.C.-based acts in the running for awards include Surrey's Tyler Joe Miller with four nominations. Perennial favourite Dallas Smith has one nomination in the Fans Choice category. Smith has won eight CCMAs.
New to this year's CCMA Awards is the francophone Artist of the Year award to be presented to a solo, duo or group act demonstrating exceptional achievements within the nomination time frame. This year's nominees are: Francis Degrandpré, Fred Dionne, Sara Dufour, Vince Lemire, and Salebarbes.
The full list of 2025 CCMA Awards nominees can be found at ccma.org.
Local fans will have two opportunities to put Whitcomb in first place as they can vote in both the Breakthrough Artist or Group of the Year, and Fans Choice awards by casting their ballot at ccma.org/fanvoting.
It says a lot about the explosion of country music into the mainstream that the Breakthrough Artist Award is presented by Birkenstock. Socks or not, the comfort shoe brand is not likely anyone's first go-to when thinking about big hats and buckles.
The Fans Choice Award is presented by Bud Light, which seems much more 'on brand.'
Country Music Week kicks off on Sept. 10 in Kelowna. The four-day-long event includes an industry conference, fan events, country crawl and the big awards show. That event will include performances from Madeline Merlo, Tyler Joe Miller, Sacha and Restless Road, Smith and Alexandra Kay, Thelma & James, Whitcomb and more act announcements to come.
The 2025 CCMA Awards presented by TD take place on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. at Prospera Place. Tickets are on sale now at selectyourtickets.

Ontario couple vows to play Lotto 6/49 for a year — then wins $2.5M jackpot

Blaine and Evelyne started a one-year lottery plan and hit the jackpot halfway through Last fall, Blaine Parrington and Evelyne Rainville made a simple pact: they'd play Lotto 6/49 every Wednesday for one year and see what happened. Six months in, the Sturgeon Falls, Ont., couple found themselves $2.5 million richer. The couple's $3 Lotto 6/49 ticket matched the winning numbers in the April 2, 2025 Classic Draw. Their ticket was one of two that split the $5 million jackpot. While the retirees have been casual lottery players for nearly 15 years, dabbling in both jackpot and Instant games, this was their first major win. 'I scanned our Lotto 6/49 ticket on the store's ticket checker and saw the 'Big Winner' message. When I asked the store clerk to validate our ticket, the lottery terminal froze. An OLG representative called and confirmed we'd won $2.5 million,' said Parrington. 'I was amazed and shocked. It was a feeling that can't be explained into words.' With happy tears in his eyes, he rushed home to share the life-changing news with his loved ones. 'I was astonished,' Rainville said, recalling the moment she found out they were now millionaires. 'That afternoon, we had family over and told them about our winning ticket. Everyone was very happy for us, including our son, whom we video chatted with and sent a picture of the validation slip. It was a surreal and exceptionally overwhelming moment.' Parrington also shared the exciting news with his daughter, whose reaction was one he won't forget. 'I reached out to my daughter, but she was busy and had to call me back,' said Parrington. 'After seeing the text message I'd sent her, she returned my call. When I answered, she was singing the Barenaked Ladies song, 'If I Had $1,000,000.' It was such a wholesome moment.' The funny response was a reminder of how surreal this win felt for Parrington and Rainville — and how much joy it brought their entire family. With the prize now in hand, the couple is looking forward to a more relaxed and fulfilling chapter of life. 'I enjoy fishing, so I'm looking to buy a new boat,' said Parringon. 'I'd like to upgrade my car, and we'd love to plan a trip within Canada to see the Rocky Mountains,' added Rainville. 'We'll also share this prize with our children and grandchildren, complete some renovations, and make some investments for our future.' The duo's winning numbers were 18, 26, 35, 40, 43, 47, and the ticket was purchased at RX Drug Mart on King Street in Sturgeon Falls, Ont. Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million. From a playful weekly tradition to a multi-million dollar win, Parrington and Rainville are proof that sometimes all it takes is one good idea and a little bit of luck. Canadian beauty queen Siera Bearchell says she was bullied for her weight during Miss Universe pageant: 'The world called me fat'

"My dream of standing on the Miss Universe stage was achieved because I had more to offer to the world than a number on a scale," wrote Bearchell in a recent social media post. Siera Bearchell is opening up about the journey to rebuild her confidence during her time as Miss Universe Canada. In an Instagram post on Monday, Bearchell said she faced intense scrutiny and bullying for her weight while representing Canada at the Miss Universe pageant in 2017. On Monday, Bearchell shared a series of images to Instagram from her time as Miss Universe Canada, including a photo of herself in a swimsuit that included the text, 'The world called me fat and this is what I did…' Throughout the carousel, Bearchell said that her excitement was tainted by hurtful comments when she arrived at the Miss Universe competition in Manila. 'I showed up and people started calling me 'fat,' 'Miss Piggy Universe' and 'whale,'' she wrote. 'I was labelled the plus-sized contestant. People even accused me of gaining weight on purpose to 'stand out.'' According to Bearchell, she had 'minimal support' from the national team. 'I could feel they didn't believe in me, and I started to lose confidence in myself,' she added. 'Until I remembered that I got to this point because I wasn't afraid to show up as me. I came this far because I knew that beauty and confidence was beyond size. My dream of standing on the Miss Universe stage was achieved because I had more to offer to the world than a number on a scale.' Bearchell, who ultimately finished in the top nine, said she spent the days before the pageant working to repair her confidence so that she could 'stand tall' and 'proud.' 'I quite literally coached myself into having the confidence to step on that stage … even when the world was making memes of me that were making fun of me for not being as thin as the other contestants,' she continued. The now 32-year-old married mother-of-two said she's been using the 'confidence tips and tricks' to help her 'show up' in her life. 'I have realized people will doubt you and it's up to you to show up anyways,' she said. The post earned praise from followers who applauded Bearchell for weathering the storm of negativity. 'I am so amazed with the way you expressed yourself and how you owned the stage with so much confidence and that's the purpose of Miss Universe,' a follower wrote. 'Beauty competitions or pageantries supersede just having a beautiful body…' 'And you were literally a size 6/8,' wrote former Miss Universe contestant Jill Lavertu. 'I will say, I'm so glad I lost to you because you won with confidence, integrity and grace. Beautiful then, beautiful now.' In 2023, Berachell posted a clip of herself giving a talk to students at Rundle College in Calgary, Alta., discussing the importance of self worth. 'No matter what, people are going to judge me," she said. "As long as I'm happy with who I am and I'm exuding that confidence myself, that's what really matters. "The relationship we have with ourselves, really sets the tone for many things in our lives," she continued. 'Really having that strong sense of inner worth and how we see ourselves. The inner dialogue is way more important than a lot of us believe. How we speak to ourselves — 'cause we would never speak to friends the way we speak to ourselves right?"

Meghan Markle's former friend Jessica Mulroney splits from husband

The Duchess of Sussex's former best friend, Jessica Mulroney, has reportedly split from her husband after almost 17 years of marriage. Sources have told Page Six that the Canadian stylist, 45, is no longer wearing her wedding ring and broke the news to friends when she attended a wedding solo in Toronto last month. Jessica shares three children with Ben – who is the son of former Canadian Prime Minister, the late Brian Mulroney and his widow, Mila. The couple have twin sons, Brian and John, 14, and daughter Ivy, 12, were part of the bridal party at Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding in Windsor in May 2018 – where Jessica also acted as the bride's maid of honour. HELLO! has reached out to Jessica Mulroney's representatives for comment. Fallout with Meghan Former actress Meghan first met stylist Jessica on the set of Suits, and the pair formed a close friendship, even going on girls' holidays together. But in 2020, the pair reportedly fell out amid a racism scandal when influencer Sasha Exeter called out Jessica for displaying "textbook white privilege" within the fashion blogging community. And when Jessica apologised, citing Meghan as one of her "closest friends", the Duchess reportedly put an end to their friendship. The stylist has not featured on Meghan's new Instagram account since the Duchess returned to the social media platform at the start of 2025 and she did not appear in the Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. Close friends Abigail Spencer, Kelly McKee Zajfen, Delfina Figueras and Daniel Martin all notably made appearances on the show. Jessica is thought to have briefly featured in the Sussexes' Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, released in 2022. Moments before Harry proposed in the garden of Nottingham Cottage, Meghan was seen video calling a friend. She was heard saying: "Oh my God Jess, it's happening. He told me not to peek."
