'My dad's still the boss' - Twiston-Davies on 'special' family yard

BBC News11-03-2025

Trainer Willy Twiston-Davies can remember taking the day off school to watch the 2010 Cheltenham Festival when Imperial Commander, trained by his father Nigel, won the Gold Cup. Along with older brother Sam, who is one of the top jockeys in the country, the Festival is a full-on family affair for the Twiston-Davies clan. "I remember it like it was yesterday," Willy told BBC Points West of the 2010 Gold Cup win. "I took the day off school, Sam won the Fox Hunters then Pigeon Island winning the Grand Annual - just a tremendously special day for the yard. Beating Kauto [Star] and Denman being an underdog. He [Imperial Commander] was a very special horse in his day, a bit underlooked, but we were very happy to have him."Former jockey Willy - who won more than 200 races during his career - has been working alongside his father at their yard in Gloucestershire. "Training's always been in the back of my mind since I was a kid, I've watched dad do it for so long," Willy said."Everyone says we're very similar so we don't seem to have many arguments because we usually agree on pretty much everything."My dad is more my best friend, so as we go on he let's me do more and more what I like and we do everything together. Obviously he's still the boss but it's been nothing but brilliant."
Willy's involvement has helped the yard grow - they have already broken last year's prize money pot with weeks of the season still to go. "We've had two very good seasons so far, we're lucky we haven't really had a slump," Willy said."I think there's probably been a little bit more pushing to trying to get some horses in. We've already run 60, 70 horses and now we're hoping to get up to the 100, 90 mark," Willy said. Sam added: "It's adding an extra element of hunger because Willie's young and really wanting to stamp his name on it."It helps with dad having Willy there to keep reminding him - 'right, we've got to grow and keep moving' - as so many of these big yards are doing now with social media and getting videos across to owners and that's what Willy's now really helping with."The Twiston-Davies yard will have 10 or 12 horses racing at Cheltenham, including Broadway Boy - ridden by Sam - on Tuesday's opening day of the Festival, Potters Charm and Push the Button. "Families that work together are very special. So hopefully the Twiston-Davies family will be in racing for a long time," Willy said.

Despite this, the former Made in Chelsea star ultimately did join his teammates on the pitch. It meant he played in the same England side as One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, 33, who is now dating Sam's ex Zara McDermott. The couple split in December, with Zara moving on with Louis. Sam and Louis were pictured training this week at Soccer Aid HQ in Tring, Herts, where the England and Rest of the World teams are preparing for the match. In the end, World XI ultimately claimed the win courtesy of a goal from Big Zuu. Regarding Sam's initial exit, a source said previously: 'Sam is gutted he can't play, but the match has just come too soon since his efforts. 'He's still going to be a presence and play a big part in the coverage but he won't be able to compete on the field.' The source added: 'There is a small blessing in his withdrawal as the focus on him and Louis will disperse. 'Their every move will be watched so it's a relief in some ways they won't be on the pitch together.' Sam Thompson breaks silence on injury that forced him out of Soccer Aid and says he had to be 'carried' to physio room Jill Scott captained the England team, with other stars such as Mo Farah, Alex Brooker and Tom Grennan also taking part. Elsewhere, Paddy McGuinness was left starstruck at the event when he shared a selfie with a Hollywood legend. The presenter - who played in goal for England's team- posed for a picture with Julia Roberts. Paddy captioned: "Just chilling with Jules. @juliaroberts @socceraid #legend #icon." A follower commented: "As you do. She's just a girl sat in front of a boy", referencing Julia's role in Notting Hill." Another wrote: "This photo makes me ridiculously happy! Absolute stars!" A third shared: "You are a lucky lucky man." While a fourth wrote: "Can't believe she's there."

Sam Thompson narrowly misses Louis run-in after late entry to Soccer Aid

Soccer Aid finally landed with the UK's biggest stars participating to raise money for charity. One of the highlights from the weeks of training has been Sam Thompson and Louis Tomlinson playing on the same team, with fans wondering how they're getting along with their romantic connections to Zara McDermott. The pair had been training together for the star-studded game, despite the One Direction star. 33, now dating Sam's ex, Zara, 28. However, Sam, 32, had to pull out of the match, after injuring his calf while making a mega journey by bike and foot from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford for Unicef last week. He was see on the sidelines with the management team for most of the game but was finally called on in the last few minutes of the game, meaning he missed having an awkward moment with Zara's new partner, Louis, who was no longer on the pitch. Former Made In Chelsea star Sam and Zara broke up late last year before she moved on with One Direction singer Louis. It was said Sam was 'blindsided' by the move and appeared to make a sly dig at his ex while discussing his love life with pal Pete Wicks. Hinting that Zara may have moved on too soon, he said: "I suppose a lot of people look for validation in other people right? And they look for the next person instantly because it's like 'I need to find someone else to fill that hole and I need to find that excitement.'" Discussing how he was asked about coming face to face with Louis at Soccer Aid, he told Pete in a recent chat: "At the end of the interview, he goes, 'Look mate, I've got to ask the question that everyone wants to know. "This is sort of the big question really, the elephant in the room, What's it going to be like with you and Louis? Obviously he's doing Soccer Aid too.'" Sam added: "Mate, you should have seen the room, everybody, it was a silent then everyone goes 'Woah, Woah Woah, end the call! End the call!' and I have just gone 'No, no guys, I've got this, I've got this.' I held my hands up to say just relax. "I think I did alright and I meant everything I said as well, that it's not about me or Louis or who anyone is dating, it's f**king Unicef and charity and everyone is going to be there for the exact same reason."
