Sibu man gets 12 years, caning for sexually assaulting 14yo daughter
SIBU (Aug 19): The Sessions Court here today sentenced a 32-year-old man to 12 years imprisonment and six strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to two sexual assault charges against his teenage daughter.
The accused was charged under Section 377CA of the Penal Code for sexual connection by object and Section 14(d) of Sexual Offences Against Children Act for physical sexual assault on a child.
Both charges were framed under Section 377CA of the Penal Code and Section 14(d) of Sexual Offences Against Children Act respectively.
He committed the offences on March 15, 2025 between 1 and 2pm at a house in Teku here.
Judge Musyiri Peet sentenced the accused to 12 years imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for each charge.
Both sentences were to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on March 20 this year.
The court also ordered the accused to attend counselling while serving his sentence and two years of police supervision after serving his sentence.
Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who is the accused's wife, received a phone call from their daughter's school teacher on March 20.
She went to the school, where the teacher informed her that her daughter had complained of being molested by the accused.
The victim later told her mother that in 2021, the accused entered her room under the pretext of putting her to sleep.
He showed her an obscene video, unbuttoned her pants, groped and kissed her, and exposed himself to her. He also attempted to insert his genitals into hers.
The accused was arrested on March 20 following a report lodged by the complainant.

Cabinet to discuss proposed cyberbullying tribunal on Friday, says PM
PUTRAJAYA: The setting up of a proposed cyberbullying tribunal will be brought to the coming Cabinet meeting this Friday (Aug 22), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The proposal will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting," the Prime Minister told reporters after attending the Finance Ministry's monthly gathering here on Wednesday (Aug 20). On Tuesday (Aug 19), Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the government is also studying the possibility of establishing a cyberbullying tribunal and an e-Safety Commissioner. She said this is to ensure faster remedies for victims, rehabilitation for offenders and stronger digital safety education, especially for children. The proposal, she added, would be handled by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department. The proposal comes following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was found unconscious in a drain at 4am on July 16 near her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. She was pronounced dead at Hospital Queen Elizabeth on July 17. Five teenagers are expected to be charged under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code related to bullying only and not causing the death of the 13-year-old girl.

Umno Youth chief Akmal to face court charge over Facebook post allegedly disturbing public order

In a statement, the AGC said the decision followed an examination of investigation papers submitted by the police. 'Based on the testimony and evidence obtained, this department has decided to bring charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Muhammad Hilman Idham and Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin,' it said. 'The statements made by these individuals were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or network services.' The AGC said all charges will be filed at the Magistrates' Court with the relevant local jurisdiction soon. It added that the statements in question were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or services. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. Hilman is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief, with his charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. It is unsure which Facebook post is responsible for Dr Akmal's charge. Meanwhile, Chandrasegaran Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang.
