City School Goes All Digital In Declaring Results

Nagpur: Centre Point School has ditched the age-old practice of printing annual report cards by going digital at all its branches in Nagpur this year. For the first time ever, for thousands of students, a city school has completely put an end to paper usage and opted for an environment-friendly way of declaring results.
Shilpee Ganguly, director-principal of CPS (Katol Road) said, "Environment was the biggest factor in our decision making. We have always followed environment-friendly practices in our campuses, and it's something which is always evolving. It's a conscious choice that we make on how our actions can have a positive impact on our surroundings."
Now, parents have to log in to school's portal with their IDs, and view the digital report card.
Parents with whom TOI spoke were happy with the decision. "Saving on paper means you are saving trees ultimately. So, it is a good thing overall," said one parent.
CPS had won TOI's Nagpur Heroes award earlier for their role in implementing environment friendly infrastructure. They had been awarded for their solar powered buildings and rainwater harvesting projects. The school set up on-grid solar power system at its Wardhaman Nagar branch way back in 2016. It had previously set up rainwater harvesting system at its Amravati Bypass road branch, for which the TOI Nagpur Heroes jury selected them for the award.

Govt starts process to hire VCs for 13 varsities
Bhubaneswar: Govt on Wednesday invited applications for the appointment of vice-chancellors of 13 state universities. The universities were facing difficulty in making important policy decisions and conducting faculty recruitment due to the lack of permanent VCs and faculty members, which the TOI had highlighted in a series of reports. The higher education department has invited applications from eligible applicants for VCs of 13 state public universities — Utkal University and Rama Devi Women's University, Bhubaneswar, Ravenshaw University and Madhusudan Law University, Cuttack, Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanjadeo University, Baripada, Gangadhar Meher University, Sambalpur, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Khallikote Unitary University, Berhampur, Shree Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, Rajendra University in Balangir, Dharanidhar University in Keonjhar, Vikram Dev University, Jeypore, and Maa Manikeshwari University, Kalahandi. VC appointment is necessary to start the process for the recruitment of faculty members. Teaching and research work have been affected due to the lack of faculty members. Candidates must submit their applications by July 5. Applications are invited from eligible applicants below 66 years of age on Dec 1, 2025, for the VC posts. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview before a three-member selection committee. The venue and schedule will be communicated in due course, higher education secretary Aravind Agrawal said in the notification. Official sources said the interview dates will be fixed for different universities on different dates, and applicants are required to attend the interview for each university separately. The 2020 amendment Act said all teachers of a university would be appointed through Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC). However, the Odisha Universities Amendment Act, 2024, clearly states a selection committee will be formed to recruit faculty members by following UGC guidelines. The committee will be chaired by the vice-chancellor of the university or his/her nominee. The faculty selection committee will include an academic not below the rank of a professor nominated by the chancellor. It will have three subject experts selected by the VC from a panel of names recommended by the syndicate. Other members will include the dean of faculty or head of the department, along with an academic from ST/SC/OBC/women/minority/PWD as per the candidate present, to be nominated by the VC.

Jeshua hopes to take University route to India basketball team
Jeshua Pinto will become one of the first Goans to be included in the Indian Universities men's basketball team that will participate at the FISU World University Games scheduled to be held in Germany from July 16-27 Panaji: While pursuing basketball, Jeshua Antonio Pinto has had to do a lot, starting with changing schools, colleges and universities. The 23-year-olds grit and determination is now paying off as he sets out to make a mark at the world stage. Jeshua will become one of the first Goans to be included in the Indian Universities men's basketball team that will participate at the FISU World University Games scheduled to be held in Germany from July 16-27. And the excitement is understandable. 'I am really happy. Without the presence of God in my life, all this would not have happened. Even if you are talented, you need prayers,' Jeshua told TOI. After completing his schooling at Lourdes Convent in Saligao, the Calangute resident opted to continue his studies at Don Bosco HSS in Panaji, simply because of the basketball facilities. After winning most of the state titles with Don Bosco and three consecutive state titles with Lourdes Basketball Club, Jeshua was recommended to former India player and coach CV Sunny by former Goa Basketball Association president, Fr Ralin de Souza. With two papers left to be cleared, and lack of playing time, Jeshua was looking for a fresh start. He joined University of Kota during this academic year, where he is pursuing Masters in Economics all over again. Jeshua captained Kota to a silver medal at the All-India University 3x3 Basketball Championship 2024 and was named Most Promising Player. He then took part in the Indian National Basketball League (U-25) and represented Delhi Dribblers early this year. Each University was asked to recommend players for the three-day national trials in Kochi. Kota sent four including Jeshua. There were over 30 players trying to make it to the final list of 12, and Jeshua was delighted to find his name in the final list. 'For the trials, I played pretty well, so I was confident. Once they announced the list of 12, I understood the weightage of it. I worked very hard, it's finally paying off,' said Jeshua. Gold medallist at the Khelo India University Games 2023, Jeshua will join the India University side for a camp next month before travelling to Germany. 'This is a small step towards my main goal which is to play for the senior national team. Coming from Goa where there is no basketball background, I had to put in an extra effort,' Jeshua said. As a child, Jeshua took to football where coaches advised him to pick up a second sport as an option. Not surprisingly, it had to be basketball since his mother, Maria Helena, has been a coach at Lourdes for over two decades. Fifth of six kids, Jeshua started playing basketball at the age of 10 and made such good progress that he was included in the state's U-14 national side the following year. 'I am extremely happy because hard work has paid off,' said his mother, Maria Helena. 'There were times when injury held us back, but Jeshua came back stronger. He is the first Goan boy to achieve this feat and hopefully motivates youngsters. Goa surely has the talent.' While the dream of playing for India is very much alive, Jeshua wants to help Goan players. 'The world's best will be there for these Games. It will be a good place to showcase my talent,' said the six-foot tall Jeshua.

IMD sounds yellow alert in state as rain inundates Ranchi pockets
1 2 Ranchi: A brief spell of rain uprooted several trees in the city and caused water logging in various residential pockets on Wednesday as the Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for eastern parts of Jharkhand, warning of thunderstorms and lightning activities in the next 24 hours Gusty wind uprooted trees in the city's Dibdih area, which fell on a parked four-wheeler. However, no casualties were reported except a few bystanders sustaining minor injuries in the incident. Talking to TOI, Argora police station in-charge Alok Singh, said that police were not informed about any harm caused to any vehicle or individuals. "The uprooted trees were cleared off the road so that vehicular movement would not be disrupted. However, the number of uprooted trees has not been assessed yet." The rain led to waterlogging in Hindpiri, Upper Bazar and Daily Market. Ranchi received 8.2 mm of rainfall till the evening. While Bokaro recorded 16 mm, Latehar recorded 5.5 mm, and Gumla and Jamtara recorded 0.5 mm of rainfall. Anwar Hussain, a resident of Hindpiri, said, "The Ranchi Municipal Corporation does not clean the drains in the area before monsoon, and the residents have to bear the brunt of that every year. The drains also need to be widened so that the pertinent problem of waterlogging can be solved." The rain brought down the mercury level, bringing respite from the rising heat. Ranchi recorded 32.9 degrees Celsius, a drop of 4.3 notches below normal while Jamshedpur recorded 37.6 degrees Celsius.
