Jeshua hopes to take University route to India basketball team
Panaji: While pursuing basketball, Jeshua Antonio Pinto has had to do a lot, starting with changing schools, colleges and universities.
The 23-year-olds grit and determination is now paying off as he sets out to make a mark at the world stage.
Jeshua will become one of the first Goans to be included in the Indian Universities men's basketball team that will participate at the FISU World University Games scheduled to be held in Germany from July 16-27.
And the excitement is understandable.
'I am really happy. Without the presence of God in my life, all this would not have happened. Even if you are talented, you need prayers,' Jeshua told TOI.
After completing his schooling at Lourdes Convent in Saligao, the Calangute resident opted to continue his studies at Don Bosco HSS in Panaji, simply because of the basketball facilities.
After winning most of the state titles with Don Bosco and three consecutive state titles with Lourdes Basketball Club, Jeshua was recommended to former India player and coach CV Sunny by former Goa Basketball Association president, Fr Ralin de Souza.
Sunny saw Jeshua's potential at a two-week training camp in Chennai and recommended him to pursue graduation (BA Sociology) at Loyola College in Chennai which has top-notch facilities.

Jeshua then joined Jain University in Bengaluru but could not finish his Masters in Economics after being hospitalised due to dehydration caused by excessive travelling for games. With two papers left to be cleared, and lack of playing time, Jeshua was looking for a fresh start. He joined University of Kota during this academic year, where he is pursuing Masters in Economics all over again.
Jeshua captained Kota to a silver medal at the All-India University 3x3 Basketball Championship 2024 and was named Most Promising Player.
He then took part in the Indian National Basketball League (U-25) and represented Delhi Dribblers early this year.
Each University was asked to recommend players for the three-day national trials in Kochi. Kota sent four including Jeshua. There were over 30 players trying to make it to the final list of 12, and Jeshua was delighted to find his name in the final list.
'For the trials, I played pretty well, so I was confident.
Once they announced the list of 12, I understood the weightage of it. I worked very hard, it's finally paying off,' said Jeshua.
Gold medallist at the Khelo India University Games 2023, Jeshua will join the India University side for a camp next month before travelling to Germany.
'This is a small step towards my main goal which is to play for the senior national team. Coming from Goa where there is no basketball background, I had to put in an extra effort,' Jeshua said.
As a child, Jeshua took to football where coaches advised him to pick up a second sport as an option. Not surprisingly, it had to be basketball since his mother, Maria Helena, has been a coach at Lourdes for over two decades.
Fifth of six kids, Jeshua started playing basketball at the age of 10 and made such good progress that he was included in the state's U-14 national side the following year.
'I am extremely happy because hard work has paid off,' said his mother, Maria Helena. 'There were times when injury held us back, but Jeshua came back stronger. He is the first Goan boy to achieve this feat and hopefully motivates youngsters. Goa surely has the talent.'
While the dream of playing for India is very much alive, Jeshua wants to help Goan players.
'The world's best will be there for these Games. It will be a good place to showcase my talent,' said the six-foot tall Jeshua.

Jerry Jones just explained why Micah Parsons isn't signed and it's straight chaos
Jerry Jones Thought a Handshake Locked In Micah Parsons. (Credit-X) Just when Cowboys fans thought the Micah Parsons contract drama couldn't get messier, Jerry Jones opened his mouth and dropped a quote straight out of the 1980s. While speaking to NFL Network's Jane Slater, Jones explained why he was shocked that no deal had been finalized with Parsons. His reasoning? Because he thought they had a verbal understanding, the same way he claims he bought the Cowboys decades ago. Yep, this saga now includes trade demands, ghosted agents, and a billionaire owner reminiscing about handshake deals while his star defender remains unsigned. Welcome to the Jerry Jones Show: where loyalty is old-school and the contracts? Apparently optional. Jerry Jones believed the Cowboys had a deal with Micah Parsons based on a handshake-style agreement The drama dates back to March 2025. According to Jones, he and Parsons had a conversation that he believed established the framework of a new contract. He thought the hard part was done even though nothing was signed or officially submitted. Speaking to Slater, Jones shared the story of how he bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989: 'I bought the Dallas Cowboys with a handshake. It took about 30 seconds. I gave the number, shook hands, the details we worked out later.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo He went on to say that back then, even a multi-million dollar decision came down to a coin flip. So, naturally, he assumed a similar approach with Parsons would move the deal forward. But obviously Parsons didn't view the conversation the same way. According to reports, when his agent followed up later, the Cowboys were stunned to learn that no formal deal had been agreed upon. The result? A complete breakdown in communication and a frustrated Parsons who's now reportedly requested a trade. To his credit, Jones did clarify that in modern NFL business, there's no skipping the paperwork: 'There's no question that in the case of a player contract, you have to have it in writing. All parties do.' The Micah Parsons trade buzz is getting louder and Jerry's comments aren't helping Let's not forget, this entire saga exploded after Parsons scrubbed all Cowboys references from his social media and reportedly requested a trade last week. The silence from his camp since then has been deafening, and Jerry's remarks while classic may only add fuel to the fire. As it stands, Dallas still hasn't spoken to Parsons' agent. Jones even admitted he's unsure if the star linebacker will be ready for Week 1. It's a strange standoff made even stranger by the fact that both sides apparently walked away from the same conversation with totally different interpretations. Unless Jones and the front office can get serious about putting numbers on paper, they risk losing more than a contract. They risk losing the locker room, the fanbase's trust and the future of their defense. Air India Express plane suffers bird hit before take-off at Pune airport
Pune: Around 140 passengers of an Air India Express' Pune-Bhubaneswar flight (IX-1098) on Wednesday afternoon had a close shave as the aircraft aborted take-off because of a bird hit after it started rolling on the runway. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Mohammad Nadeem, the passenger on seat number 22D of the plane, told TOI, "Flames started coming out of the engine after it gained speed. Right after that, the pilot hit the brakes and the aircraft came to a screeching halt. The brakes were hit so hard that some passengers' cellphones were thrown off and a child almost fell from a woman's arms." He said the aircraft rolled on the runway for approximately 15-20 seconds before coming to a screeching halt. The runway length of the Pune airport is 2,535 metres (8,316 feet). Aviation experts told TOI that the average peak speed of aircraft like Airbus A320 before the take-off is 250-300 kmph. "The speed of the aircraft is always decided by the pilot. There are three kinds of speeds — V1 (decision speed), VR (rotation speed) and V2 (take-off safety speed). V1 is the maximum speed limit at which a pilot can safely abort take-off in case of an emergency. After the V1 limit, the take-off must be continued. The speed depends on factors like weather and load factor. The safety of the runway in Pune is the sole responsibility of the Indian Air Force," aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar said. Last month, a bird hit was detected on an Air India's Delhi-Pune plane after it landed at the city airport. In June, an Air India Express flight from Bhubaneswar had to abort landing and make a go-around after its pilot spotted a dog on the runway. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nadeem, booked on the Air India' Pune-Bhubaneswar flight, said there was no announcement for around 5-10 minutes after the plane stopped on Wednesday afternoon. "Thereafter, the pilot told flyers about the incident over the PA (public address) system. He said one of the engines suffered substantial damage and the aircraft wouldn't fly. After some time, the plane returned to the bay. We were disembarked and taken back to the terminal building," he said. TOI contacted the airline's spokesperson over the phone and sent him a WhatsApp message enquiring about the incident. But a reply was awaited till going to press. A source in the airport said the right engine of the aircraft, an Airbus A-320, suffered damage. In a video uploaded by Nadeem, the pilot could be heard stating that five blades of the engine suffered damage. The pilot also said a large bird was spotted on the runway and it hit the plane's engine. Nadeem said, "The airline said an alternative aircraft was being arranged for the flyers. I had a connecting flight to Delhi. Now, I will fly there directly from Pune around 1am on Thursday on another flight of the same airline."

Residents urge authorities to shift Perambur tahsildar office
Chennai: At the Perambur tahsildar office in Vyasarpadi, residents queuing up to submit petitions are met not just with long waits, but also with broken chairs, stray dogs occupying seats, and a single unhygienic restroom. The office, temporarily operating out of a community hall for the past one and a half years, lacks basic amenities, making it distressing for petitioners who visit daily. Locals are now urging authorities to shift the office as they are unable to use the hall. Since there is only one community centre in the locality, residents depend on it for family functions as they cannot afford to rent private halls. Even though the authorities are aware of the problems, not even temporary measures have been taken. We urge authorities to upgrade the existing facility and maintain it properly," said S Chittibabu of Pattalam. Residents also say that those coming for services at the e-seva centre are often redirected to other centres, especially for aadhaar card updates. "We have been maintaining the existing facility at the Chennai Corporation's community hall. Since renovation work is ongoing near the Perambur railway station, we are expecting to move back within the next four months," said a senior official at the office.
