Analysts stay upbeat on Malaysia's renewable energy outlook

KUALA LUMPUR: Analysts have stayed positive on Malaysia's renewable energy outlook in the second half of this year, underpinned by a strong orderbook, reported Xinhua.
Maybank Investment Bank said in its recent report that it retains a positive view on the country's renewable energy sector, underpinned by strong Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP) execution, stabilising trend on solar panel prices, and upcoming catalysts from large-scale solar 5+ programme (LSS5+) and LSS6 rollouts.
Looking ahead, it noted that orderbook visibility in the sector has improved. This will be driven by solar project commissioning, stable engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) margins and initial progress on battery energy storage system (BESS) investment.
The report also noted that the government is progressing toward LSS5+ and LSS6 rollouts, with requests for proposals (RFPs) expected to be released in the second half.
Meanwhile, LSS6 is anticipated to open up two gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity and may incorporate BESS elements as part of grid firming requirements.
"CGPP and LSS5 remain critical growth engines, with most awarded projects targeting to complete by FY2026-FY2027," said the research house.
Maybank also highlighted that solar panel prices have remained stable at multi-year lows, with the latest quotes below US$0.10 per watt.
This is supportive of the project's internal rate of return and is expected to sustain through the second half due to global oversupply, despite higher demand from Southeast Asia, it added.
Meanwhile, Kenanga Research highlighted in its recent report that the EPCC contract value for the sector has now surged to 17.4 billion ringgit (US$4.1 billion).
While LSS5+ is entering the award phase, the research house noted that Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) is also back in play as the recent tariff hike hits data centres, triggering a surprise jump in EPCC job flow.
Hong Leong Investment Bank Research also anticipates an extended growth phase in EPCC orderbooks due to the coming solar EPCC award cycle driven by LSS5, LSS5+ and LSS6.
"Domestic orientation reduces the risk of negative earnings revision due to uncertain external developments," the research house said in its recent report.

Samaiden gets profit enhancement via new RE jobs

TA Research estimated a gross aggregate capital expenditure of RM171mil for the upcoming FiT assets. PETALING JAYA: Samaiden Group Bhd 's recent contract wins in the renewable energy (RE) sector indicate a potential 20% enhancement to its annual earnings and a 10% valuation enhancement once all three projects come online. In a report, TA Research said under the latest Feed in Tariff (FiT) 2.0 bidding cycle, Samaiden secured contracts to develop three new bioenergy power generation plants with aggregate gross capacity of 18MW. The three contracts that were won separately include a 1.5 megawatt (MW) biogas plant in Bachok, Kelantan, a 5.5MW biomass plant in Tangkak, Johor and a 11MW biomass plant in Kemaman, Terengganu. TA Research said the positive trajectory for Samaiden's earnings and valuation is based on a high single-digit pooled internal rate of return and a capital expenditure (capex) of circa RM10mil per MW. All three assets are expected to be commissioned by July 25, 2028 and will operate under the 21-year RE power purchase agreement. The research house estimated a gross aggregate capital expenditure of RM171mil for the upcoming FiT assets. 'The gross equity portion of the capital expenditure capex, estimated at RM34mil, should be manageable considering the group's financial year 2027 (FY27) gross cash of RM120mil,' TA Research pointed out. The research house added it would make no changes to earnings projections as the assets are only expected to come onstream in FY29. It said it maintained a 'buy' call with an unchanged target price of RM1.38 'We continue to like Samaiden as one of the key beneficiaries of an upcycle in RE plant-up, underpinned by a solid order book, strong net cash position and secured pipeline of RE assets to boost recurring income,' it said. TA Research said some of the catalysts include Samaiden's Large Scale Solar 5 (LSS5) and LSS5+ engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract awards as well as its Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme. The research house noted the generation asset wins under LSS5+ and CRESS are also catalysts. Meanwhile, TA Research said risks include a sharp rise in raw material costs such as solar modules and delays in project implementation.

AI fuels costly corporate data breach: IBM Report

SACRAMENTO: As US companies race to embed artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday work, they are discovering a hidden cost: bigger, more expensive data breaches, reported Xinhua. The "Cost of a Data Breach 2025" report, published by IBM on Wednesday, revealed that 13 per cent of the 600 organisations studied suffered breaches involving their own AI models or applications. Crucially, basic access controls were missing in 97 per cent of those cases. The report also found that attackers are turning the technology against its creators: one in six breaches involved criminals using AI tools, primarily to craft convincing phishing emails and deepfake impersonations. So-called "shadow AI," systems employees deploy without authorisation, proved even costlier. Twenty per cent of respondents blamed their breach on unsanctioned AI, which added approximately 670,000 U.S. dollars to the average loss. When "shadow AI" was present, overall breach costs rose to US$4.74 million, compared with US$4.07 million when it was absent. Recent incidents illustrate how seemingly minor AI security oversights can spiral. In 2023, a single misconfigured Azure sharing link in a Microsoft AI research repository exposed 38 terabytes of internal files and over 30,000 Teams messages. That same year, Samsung temporarily banned generative AI tools after engineers pasted confidential chip designs into ChatGPT, risking sensitive leaks. Even AI providers themselves are vulnerable. A March 2023 bug in OpenAI's ChatGPT service briefly exposed some users' payment addresses and partial card details. Despite such warnings, 87 per cent of companies still lack governance policies or processes to mitigate AI risks, even though supply chain compromises already trigger nearly one-third of AI-related breaches. To address these gaps, analysts emphasise that security starts with identity: organisations must enforce strict credential management for both staff and algorithms, rotate keys frequently, and encrypt all data used to train or prompt models. Quarterly "AI health checks" that bring business and security leaders together can identify unauthorised projects, while automated threat-detection platforms help understaffed teams distinguish genuine threats from false alarms. The report concludes: "Security AI and automation lower costs, while shadow AI raises them." Organisations with mature controls reduced breach costs by nearly 40 per cent. The report noted that with the average US breach now costing US$10.22 million and regulators from Brussels to Washington drafting new rules for data-hungry algorithms, boards had a clear financial motive to treat every model, notebook and chat interface as a critical asset protected by multifactor authentication, time-limited sharing links and continuous audits before the next wave of smart machines arrives.
