President eulogises 'visionary' Aga Khan IV

Express Tribune10-02-2025

ISLAMABAD:
President Asif Zardari met with Prince Rahim Aga Khan V on Monday and offered his condolences on the passing of his father Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who died in the Portuguese capital last week, the press wing of the President Secretariat said in a press release.
It said that the president expressed his heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the people and the government of Pakistan. He said that the Pakistani nation mourned the loss of a "true friend" and "great philanthropist", whose "visionary leadership improved the lives of people" around the world.
The president lauded the late Aga Khan's contributions to Pakistan's social and economic development, particularly in healthcare, education, community development, and poverty alleviation. He hoped that Prince Rahim would continue his father's mission to serve the cause of humanity.
While en route to Lisbon, the president had a stopover at Istanbul Airport and held a brief meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two leaders discussed bilateral ties, matters of mutual interest, and exchanged courtesies.
The meeting between Zardari and Erdogan came as the Turkish president embarked on a four-day three-nation visit that would take him to Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan. According to Turkiye's Sabah Daily, Erdogan would visit Pakistan on the last leg of his tour.
It noted that Pakistan-Turkiye relations reached the highest level under successive tenures of the Turkish president. Two countries particularly increased cooperation in the defence industry, with deals signed on the acquisition of naval vessels and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).
During the February 10-13 visit, Erdogan's meeting would "focus on enhancing cooperation in various fields, as well as hot topics on the international agenda, from the Palestine-Israel conflict to the situation in Syria as well as the Russia-Ukraine conflict", the daily reported.

Trump willing to mediate Kashmir dispute after India-Pakistan ceasefire: US State Dept

The United States said President Donald Trump would like to mediate between India and Pakistan on the issue of Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce was asked about the president's offer to mediate after the ceasefire between Pakistan and India. 'What I do know is that I think we all recognize that President Trump in each step that he takes, it's made to solve generational differences between countries, generational war. 'So it doesn't – it shouldn't surprise anyone that he'd want to manage something like that. He seems very much to be – and not just seems but he is – has been the only one to bring certain people to the table to have conversations that nobody thought was possible,' she replied. She said while she cannot speak to any details, it was an exciting time that 'if we can get to a point in that particular conflict, thank God but also thank Secretary Rubio and President Trump and the Vice President'. Meanwhile, the spokesperson also confirmed a Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari met with senior State Department officials, including Under Secretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Without giving details, Bruce said the talks covered counterterrorism cooperation and US support for the India-Pakistan ceasefire.

Intra-day update: rupee declines against US dollar

The Pakistani rupee registered marginal decline against the US dollar, depreciating 0.07% during the opening hours of trading on Wednesday. At 10:25am, the local currency settled at 282.33, a loss of Re0.21 against the greenback. On Monday, the rupee settled at Rs282.12 against the US dollar. Internationally, the US dollar and China's yuan were steady on Wednesday as teams from US and China concluded trade talks in London, hinting at a thaw in a damaging trade war between the world's two largest economies but offering scant detail. The countries' officials agreed on a framework based on a trade truce reached last month in Geneva that would resolve China's export restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets, and remove some US export restrictions that were recently put in place. The US dollar firmed slightly in the wake of the news, pushing the euro down 0.07% to $1.141 and steadying at 144.91 yen. China's onshore yuan was little changed at 7.1873 per dollar, while the offshore unit stood at 7.1875. An index that measures the greenback against six other currencies inched up 0.1% and last stood at 99.132. However, analysts noted that any newly agreed tariffs would still be higher than they were late last year and would thus be a drag on the global economy. Also keeping investors cautious, a federal appeals court allowed President Donald Trump's most sweeping tariffs to remain in effect, while it reviews a lower-court decision blocking them on grounds that he had exceeded his authority by imposing them. Much of the year has been dominated by investors' unease over Trump's erratic policies. Despite a bounce back in US stocks, the erosion of investor confidence is clearly reflected in the dollar, which is down more than 8% so far this year. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, softened in Asian trade on Wednesday as markets assessed the outcome of US-China trade talks, yet to be reviewed by President Donald Trump, with weak oil demand from China and OPEC+ production increases weighing on the market. Brent crude futures declined 19 cents, or 0.3%, to trade at $66.680 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 16 cents, or 0.3%, to $64.82 at 0318 GMT. This is an intra-day update

President pushes to unlock Russia trade

President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday said Pakistan and Russia have enormous potential needed to be exploited to expand bilateral partnership in trade, investment, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. The president made these remarks as chief guest at the special ceremony celebrating the 35th National Day of the Russian Federation held in the federal capital. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Tariq Fatemi and members of the diplomatic corps attended the event. The president stated that Pakistan regards Russia as an important global power that has been a key player in ensuring regional peace and stability, particularly in the Eurasian region. President Zardari extended his sincere congratulations to President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation Albert Khorev as well as to the people of Russia. "On this significant occasion, Pakistan joins Russia in celebrating this National Day, reflecting our solidarity and friendship. I am glad to state that our bilateral relations have improved over the years, based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared interests in various fields," the president said. He said there have been extensive high-level interactions between the two countries that had laid the foundation for deeper engagement and understanding. Pakistan and Russia also continue to cooperate closely on regional and international platforms, he added. The president underlined that SAPM Tariq Fatemi had a promising meeting with Russian Foreign Minister in Moscow early this month where both sides had underscored the importance of peace and stability in the region. "I am confident that the bonds of friendship between Pakistan and Russia will continue to strengthen. As we celebrate this important occasion tonight, let us reaffirm our commitment to building bridges of understanding and cooperation between our two nations. Let us take hold of the opportunities that lie ahead and work together for a brighter and more prosperous future. Long Live Pakistan-Russia friendship," President Zardari said. Earlier, in his welcome address, Ambassador Khorev emphasized that Russia remains a sovereign, powerful, and resilient nation, driven by the unwavering support of its people. Reflecting on the words of President Putin, the Ambassador noted that Russia has historically played a unifying role in the region, stretching "from the Baltics to the Caucasus." Highlighting the steady progress in Pak-Russia relations, Ambassador Khorev stated that bilateral cooperation is advancing at a satisfactory pace across various sectors. He expressed appreciation for Pakistan's growing interest in Russian language and culture. "We commend the Pakistani enthusiasm for learning the Russian language," he remarked. "The Russian Mission is actively supporting the establishment and expansion of language learning institutions across the country." The ambassador also reaffirmed Russia's continued support for Pakistan on various international platforms, noting that both nations are working together to deepen ties in education, diplomacy, and mutual development. The event concluded with Russian musician's performance on folk music.
