Starlink Satellites Are 'Leaking' Radio Emissions
Light pollution stretches far beyond the hazy glow of a city on the horizon. Down in the radio portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, governments barter sections of light. Large portions of bandwidth stay reserved for the military, while others get auctioned off (sometimes literally) to communications companies. Squeezed in between these chunks of spectrum lie bands for public broadcasting, HAM radio, and science.
Governments, corporations, and private citizens are supposed to stay away from protected bands so that radio telescopes can observe in peace. When the Starlink satellites launched, SpaceX collaborated with key radio astronomy observatories to avoid broadcasting while transiting above telescopes. Strategies include turning off Starlink WiFi services completely in certain regions of the sky.
The resulting disruptions to Starlink operations are not insignificant. Spectrum management, especially in the United States, involves give-and-take on both sides. But American observatories have the benefit of observing at mid- to high-frequencies, at least by radio standards. Those frequency bands are less polluted than low frequencies, because emitting at low frequencies takes less energy and so costs less.
If corporations and the military ignored protected bands, it would cause serious problems for radio astronomy. But a new study by engineers at the SKA suggests unintended electromagnetic radiation, or UEMR, may be a bigger issue than intended radiation.
The SKA is still under construction. When completed, it will be the most powerful radio telescope in the world. The low-frequency part of the telescope (SKA-Low) is designed to go after trace echoes from when matter began to coalesce 13 billion years ago. SKA-Low looks odd even by the standards of radio telescopes. A thick forest of metallic Christmas trees in the Australian desert maximizes sensitivity to faint signals.
But the new era of radio telescopes is butting up against a new era of satellites. There are more satellites in orbit than ever before, including massive networks of related satellites called constellations. With 7,000 satellites in Low Earth Orbit, Starlink is the biggest constellation.
As they transit above SKA-Low, Starlink satellites release radio emissions through multiple protected bands. In a pre-print of their study, the SKA-Low team reports 112,534 intrusions of Starlink satellites in their radio images. Their month-long study showed that 30% of all Starlink satellites in the sky at the time appear in their data.
Most of this emission seems to be accidental. UEMR from Starlink interfering with radio astronomy isn't unprecedented. During the initial launch phase, radio astronomers found that the propulsion system on the satellites emitted at unexpectedly low frequencies, decreasing the quality of astronomical data in an already polluted band. But the satellites had all been launched at the time of this new study. So where is all this radio pollution coming from?
We don't know the various origins of the UEMR the SKA-Low team observed, except for one feature at 99.7 MHz. If that sounds like an FM radio band, it's no coincidence. Starlink satellites bounce FM radio shows back down to the Earth. For telescopes carefully located in radio-quiet zones, that's not ideal.
Fixing this issue is particularly crucial to the success of SKA-Low, which seeks to look further back in time than any telescopes in a similar radio band. Signals from the early universe are very faint, and Starlink satellites are not.
Unfortunately, the codes governing spectrum use only ban intended radio emission in protected bands. Consider a hyperbolic analogy: Imagine if murder were illegal, but manslaughter wasn't. Spectrum experts and regulators are currently discussing how to address this issue. For now, though, as long as Starlink is here, so are the unintended radio emissions.

All eyes are on Starship, but SpaceX has another key mission on Sunday, too
SpaceX is targeting Sunday for two important launches that will take place about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) apart. Most of the attention is fixed on the 10th launch of SpaceX's massive Starship rocket, which should leave the launchpad near Boca Chica, Texas, in the early evening. Recommended Videos But in the early hours of Sunday, SpaceX is also preparing to launch its 33rd commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) using its trusty Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft. The Dragon will be filled with more than 5,000 pounds of supplies for the crew aboard the ISS, which orbits around 250 miles above Earth. Besides plenty of food, the consignment will also include a number of experiments for crew members to work on, such as bone-forming stem cells for studying bone loss prevention, and materials to 3D print medical implants that could advance treatments for nerve damage on Earth, NASA said. While docked at the station, the Dragon vehicle will also perform a reboost demonstration to help the ISS maintain its current altitude. 'The hardware, located in the trunk of Dragon, contains an independent propellant system separate from the spacecraft to fuel two Draco engines using existing hardware and propellant system design,' NASA explained. 'The boost kit will demonstrate the capability to help sustain the orbiting lab's altitude starting in September with a series of burns planned periodically throughout the fall of 2025.' It added that the Dragon first demonstrated these capabilities in November last year during the 31st commercial resupply mission. Concerns grow that 'incredible' underwater phenomenon off Aussie coast is under threat
Hundreds of thousands of cuttlefish have begun their descent on the Australian coastline in the world's largest migration of the species, and authorities are on high alert as the lethal algal bloom in South Australia could wreak havoc on the "spectacular" phenomenon. Between May and August, cuttlefish migrate to the Whyalla coastline to mate and reproduce, with the environment creating ideal conditions for the females to lay and attach their eggs. However, as the deadly algal bloom continues to cover more than 500 kilometres across the state's waters, authorities are concerned that if it reaches the Whyalla coast, it could have a devastating impact on the species as the entire population congregates in one spot. "Cuttlefish may be vulnerable to the algal bloom should it be detected at Cuttlefish Coast," a SA Department for Environment and Water (DEW) spokesperson told Yahoo News. However as it stands, the algal bloom hasn't yet reached the cuttlefish hotspot. "There is no evidence to suggest the algal bloom is affecting cuttlefish or associated marine habitats at this stage," the spokesperson said. DEW confirmed to Yahoo News it will continue to monitor the algal bloom via satellite imagery and water testing, and is considering a range of options to protect the cuttlefish eggs if the algal bloom were to spread into the area. The department has not ruled out moving the eggs to a different location. DEW are keeping a close eye on the unfolding situation; however, it confirmed to Yahoo News in July that "nothing can be done" to stop it. "The algal bloom is a dynamic situation. Its movement depends on weather and water conditions, and therefore makes the effect on people and wildlife unpredictable," a spokesperson said at the time. "Nothing can be done to dilute or dissipate the bloom." The wind direction and its subsequent effect on the current could be all that stands between the cuttlefish and the algal bloom spread, Dr Zoe Doubleday at the University of South Australia told ABC Radio this month. "It's a nerve-wracking time and it's not something I've ever experienced before [in my] job as a marine ecologist to do research about whether we're going to see a potential wipeout of a piece of biodiversity," Dr Doubleday said. There is no indication of when the algal bloom will end, and there may be a small window of time that authorities have to intervene if it looks like the cuttlefish could be in danger. Why does Starship keep exploding? SpaceX report sheds light on 2 recent mishaps
Following a successful year for Starship in 2024, SpaceX has endured a series of relative disappointments for the world's largest rocket in 2025. Starship's first three test flights of the year, from January through May, all ended with the spacecraft exploding in dramatic fashion while traveling through the air. Those setbacks were followed in June by the fiery destruction of another Starship vehicle as the commercial rocket company founded by billionaire Elon Musk readied it for ground testing at its South Texas facility. These failures followed on the heels of a year of firsts, when SpaceX launched Starship four times and achieved new milestones each flight. These accomplishments included flying three consecutive times halfway around the world before splashing down as planned in the Indian Ocean, and, in October, the first of three successful returns of the Super Heavy rocket booster to the launch pad. But what might appear as letdowns are still learning experiences that SpaceX has long insisted can provide data on how to improve a spacecraft that will have a crucial role in the future of U.S. spaceflight. Still, that doesn't mean SpaceX isn't obligated to figure out what went wrong. "Every lesson learned, through both flight and ground testing, continues to feed directly into designs for the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy," SpaceX said in August on its website in revealing the findings of its investigations into the last two fiery mishaps. SpaceX plans to conduct the 10th flight test of its Starship spacecraft Sunday, Aug. 24, with a target liftoff time of 7:30 p.m. ET. SpaceX conducts Starship test flights from the company's Starbase headquarters in South Texas, located about 23 miles from Brownsville near the U.S.-Mexico border. Texas voters in Cameron County approved a measure in May for Starbase to become a city, complete with a mayor and a city council. What happened when Starship exploded? Starship's upcoming flight test was previously delayed June 18 when the Starship vehicle SpaceX assigned to the next flight, designated Ship 36, unexpectedly exploded while SpaceX was preparing it for launch. No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred as the Starship spacecraft was standing alone on the test stand being filled with cryogenic propellants for an engine test-firing prior to being mounted on top of the rocket booster. The mishap, which SpaceX later referred to on its website as "a sudden energetic event," completely destroyed the spacecraft and ignited several fires that caused damage in the area surrounding the test stand. The explosion was the latest fiery mishap SpaceX's Starship has encountered during – and, now, prior to – its flight tests in 2025. Starship's most recent demonstration came May 27 when the spacecraft spun out of control roughly halfway through its flight and disintegrated in a fireball. Though Starship was unable to achieve its most important objectives, the distance the vehicle traveled far surpassed the previous 2025 flights in January and March, when Starship exploded within minutes. Why does Starship keep exploding? SpaceX releases report SpaceX had previously released findings into the first two Starship explosions in January and March. Now, the company has unveiled the results of investigations for the two most recent mishaps, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches. The May 27 mission got off to a positive start, with the successful first-ever launch of a rocket booster – known as Super Heavy – that had flown during a previous flight in January. Reusing a booster was an important milestone for SpaceX to demonstrate that the rocket can be flown multiple times. But rather than making a controlled splashdown as planned, the booster came apart in the air and plummeted into the Gulf of Mexico, which the U.S. government has renamed as the Gulf of America. SpaceX attributed the crash to a structural failure to the booster's fuel transfer tube, which resulted in methane and liquid oxygen mixing and igniting. The vehicle's upper stage – known simply as Starship, or Ship – managed to separate from the booster and fire its six Raptor engines to propel itself on a trajectory taking it into suborbital space as it soared around the world. But contact with Starship was lost approximately 46 minutes into the flight as it spun out of control and once again came apart over the Indian Ocean. SpaceX traced the failure to the main fuel tank pressurization system diffuser, located on the forward dome of Starship's primary methane tank. Other issues with the nosecone prevented Starship from deploying eight test Starlink satellites. As for the June explosion, SpaceX said it was caused by undetected damage to a high-pressure nitrogen storage tank inside Starship's payload bay section, called a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV.) In a statement, the FAA said it "oversaw and accepted" SpaceX's findings and gave it the greenlight to proceed with its next Starship launch. "SpaceX identified corrective actions to prevent a reoccurrence of the event," the FAA said. What is Starship? SpaceX rocket to fly to moon, Mars But when it comes to Starship's development, SpaceX has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing that sometimes leads to explosive ends can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle's design. SpaceX is developing Starship to be a fully reusable transportation system, meaning both the rocket and vehicle can return to the ground for additional missions. In the years ahead, Starship is set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight. Starship is the centerpiece of Musk's vision of sending the first humans to Mars, and is also critical in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface. But the next-generation spacecraft has yet to reach orbit on any of its nine uncrewed flight tests, which began in 2023. SpaceX received key regulatory approval earlier in 2025 to conduct up to 25 Starship tests a year, after which Musk took to social media in late May to proclaim that the vehicle's next three launches would occur much faster than normal – at a cadence of one "every 3 to 4 weeks." How big is Starship? The Starship, standing nearly 400 feet tall when fully stacked, is regarded as the world's largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever developed. When fully integrated, the launch system is composed of both a 232-foot Super Heavy rocket and the 171-foot upper stage Starship itself, the spacecraft where crew and cargo would ride. That size makes Starship large enough to tower over SpaceX's famous 230-foot-tall Falcon 9 – one of the world's most active rockets. Super Heavy alone is powered by 33 of SpaceX's Raptor engines that give the initial burst of thrust at liftoff.
