Airlines divert, cancel flights after Israel's strike on Iran closes airspace in Middle East
Airlines around the world canceled flights to Israel and were skirting a large swath of airspace in the Middle East on Friday after Israel's overnight missile strike on Iran. Iran later launched drones toward Israeli territory.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines canceled service to Tel Aviv, Israel, through at least Saturday. Both carriers' Tel Aviv-bound flights turned around over the Atlantic Ocean to return to the New York area after Israel's strikes.
Israeli airline El Al has indefinitely suspended service.
"Following recent security developments and in accordance with the instructions from the state's security and aviation authorities to close Israeli airspace, all EL AL and Sundor flights are suspended for the time being," it said on its website.
The carrier said it won't take bookings until at least the end of June and warned customers against going to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport.
"For customers currently abroad, we recommend arranging accommodation until there is a change in security directives," El Al said. "Flights that were en route to Israel have been diverted to land at various EL AL destinations."
Turkish Airlines and European budget carrier Wizz Air also suspended Israel flights. Germany's Lufthansa said it was suspending Tel Aviv and Tehran service until July 31 and flights to Jordan and Lebanon until at least June 20.
Airlines offered travel vouchers and waived change fees to customers affected by the disruptions.
Escalating military conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine have forced airlines to repeatedly take longer and more costly routes to avoid conflict zones.

While the decision makes sense given the danger it would present to travelers, it is a significant change for travelers as the Tel Aviv airport is one of the biggest hubs in the Middle East and could put a wrench in travel plans going forward. Delta has indicated that it will continue to monitor the situation as it looks to prioritize the safety of its customers. "The safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority. Delta is continuously monitoring the evolving security environment and assessing our operations based on security guidance and intelligence reports. Updates will be communicated as needed," Delta's statement continued. It's likely that the airline's service to Tel Aviv will be put on hiatus until the conflict between Israel and Iran comes to an end. – Oil prices notched the biggest one-day gain since March 2022 on Friday as the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict threatens to disrupt crude supplies in the oil-rich Middle East region, but the surge was largely driven by short-covering, suggesting there's limited room for further upside unless the conflict spills over into a regional war or Tel Aviv targets Iran's energy infrastructure, according to Citi analysts. 'If the overnight operation against Iran effectively were to reduce managed money gross shorts from 187k lots to 0, then the price move could have been ~$14/bbl,' Citi analysts said in a recent note, adding, 'we do not expect a further short-covering rally in meaningful size.' Brent crude spiked to an intraday high of $78.5/bbl before settling at following Israel's military strikes, but Citi sees energy flow disruptions as likely limited, and doubts prices will stay elevated for long. 'Heightened geopolitical tensions may well remain, but we don't expect energy prices to stay elevated for a sustained period of time,' the analysts said.
