Airlines divert, cancel flights after Israel's strike on Iran closes airspace in Middle East

CNBC17 hours ago

Airlines around the world canceled flights to Israel and were skirting a large swath of airspace in the Middle East on Friday after Israel's overnight missile strike on Iran. Iran later launched drones toward Israeli territory.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines canceled service to Tel Aviv, Israel, through at least Saturday. Both carriers' Tel Aviv-bound flights turned around over the Atlantic Ocean to return to the New York area after Israel's strikes.
Israeli airline El Al has indefinitely suspended service.
"Following recent security developments and in accordance with the instructions from the state's security and aviation authorities to close Israeli airspace, all EL AL and Sundor flights are suspended for the time being," it said on its website.
The carrier said it won't take bookings until at least the end of June and warned customers against going to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport.
"For customers currently abroad, we recommend arranging accommodation until there is a change in security directives," El Al said. "Flights that were en route to Israel have been diverted to land at various EL AL destinations."
Turkish Airlines and European budget carrier Wizz Air also suspended Israel flights. Germany's Lufthansa said it was suspending Tel Aviv and Tehran service until July 31 and flights to Jordan and Lebanon until at least June 20.
Airlines offered travel vouchers and waived change fees to customers affected by the disruptions.
Escalating military conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine have forced airlines to repeatedly take longer and more costly routes to avoid conflict zones.

Delta Cancels All Flights into Tel Aviv Amid Israel-Iran Conflict

Amid conflict between Israel and Iran that escalated this week, Delta has shut down one of its major international routes. On Friday, June 13, Israel's capital city of Tel Aviv was hit with missile strikes from Iran in retaliation for Israel's strikes against Iran on Thursday. As conflict continues to escalate between the two nations, Delta Air Lines has made the decision to stop all flights from New York-JFK to Tel Aviv until at least August 31. "Delta has paused flights to Tel Aviv (TLV) from New York-JFK through August 31 in response to the current conflict in the region," Delta wrote in a statement on Friday. "Customers impacted by flight cancellations will receive notifications via the Fly Delta app and contact information listed in their reservation as these cancellations are processed in Delta's system and may contact Delta or their travel agent for rebooking options." This move comes after Delta had just resumed the route at the end of May after previously pausing service to Tel Aviv due to conflict in the area. While the decision makes sense given the danger it would present to travelers, it is a significant change for travelers as the Tel Aviv airport is one of the biggest hubs in the Middle East and could put a wrench in travel plans going forward. Delta has indicated that it will continue to monitor the situation as it looks to prioritize the safety of its customers. "The safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority. Delta is continuously monitoring the evolving security environment and assessing our operations based on security guidance and intelligence reports. Updates will be communicated as needed," Delta's statement continued. It's likely that the airline's service to Tel Aviv will be put on hiatus until the conflict between Israel and Iran comes to an end. A square-neck jumpsuit with built-in shapewear that eliminates the need for undergarments. Don't worry — it's nice and thick! Some budget-friendly high-waisted leggings if you've sworn off jeans and any other bottoms without at least 5% spandex. Or a pair of Savage x Fenty seamless high-waist leggings that earn rave reviews from even the pickiest of leggings aficionados as they don't roll or leave seam marks after extended wear. A two-piece lounge set you're certain to feel comfy and pulled together in because getting up at the crack of dawn for a 5 a.m. flight is *not* your forte, but it did save you a pretty penny. A silky satin midi skirt with a silhouette that says "chic" and an elastic waistband that says "I'll give your most comfortable sweats a run for their money." A classic London Fog trench you can throw on over anything and immediately look like you belong in whatever European city you're visiting. A pair of Levi's Ribcage jeans that go where no low-rise jeans have ever gone before — up, up, up past your belly button. Thesus Weekend Boots — the ideal choice for adventure travelers everywhere thanks to their seam-sealed water-resistant upper, anti-slip rubber lug sole, and temperature-control lining. While they're perf for hikes and other demanding activities, the versatile design lends itself just as well to brunch, window shopping, and putzing around town. A stylish midi tank dress with straps wide enough to hide your bra so you don't have to waste any room packing a strapless option you absolutely detest wearing anyways. A pair of 100% European linen pants I have worn to legit every country I've ever been to in the last four years. Full stop. A seriously *stunning* slip dress you can gussy up or tone down. They're ultra-comfortable, waterproof, and can take a serious beating, too, if you need to shove them in the exterior water bottle pouch of your backpack because you bought more souvenirs than anticipated. A ruched bodycon dress with a simple silhouette made more exciting by adjustable ties. Slip on some color-coordinated sandals or chunky sneakers and you're all done, bb! A two-pack of tank tops because they match literally everything. Idk about you, but as a carry-on-only traveler who rewears clothes, that's essential! The asymmetrical design makes them a little more interesting than a plain tee, they don't wrinkle, and they take up next to no space in your bag, which is a win-win-win. Some trusty Birkenstock Arizona sandals — mine have been around the world with me and I guarantee yours will quickly become your go-to plus one!! An off-the-shoulder top that's such a hit with reviewers, many have bought it in multiple colors. A comfy wire-free bra that does the impossible — goes completely undetected under white T-shirts! No more having to pack a separate bra just for finicky tops. A Black Diamond sun hoodie with UPF 50+ so you don't burn to a crisp on your next hike. That said, it's also lightweight, so you won't sweat out more H20 than you can carry in your lil' sippy backpack. A pair of lightweight legging-style joggers reviewers say are comparable to Lululemon Align Joggers — but for less than 30 bucks, so you can girl math an extra excursion into your trip! A pair of handmade huaraches with all the airflow of a sandal, but also the benefit of a closed-toe design if you have any vacation activities in mind that are more intense than suntanning on the beach. (Zip lining, anyone?) A trusty jean jacket you can *literally* wear with anything. There was a time when my mom told me to stop using the word literally 'cause I said it every two seconds, but mom, I swear it's justified in this case! A trusty pair of Reebok Club C Doubles — the only shoes I'd save from a burning building if given the opportunity. They're comfy straight out of the box, and they pair with literally every outfit! An oversized hoodie with a built-in sleep mask that ensures some quality shut-eye whether you're traveling by plane, train, or automobile (most likely Lyft or Uber...).

Oil in biggest gain since 2022 as Israel hits Iran, but Citi warns gains may fade

– Oil prices notched the biggest one-day gain since March 2022 on Friday as the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict threatens to disrupt crude supplies in the oil-rich Middle East region, but the surge was largely driven by short-covering, suggesting there's limited room for further upside unless the conflict spills over into a regional war or Tel Aviv targets Iran's energy infrastructure, according to Citi analysts. 'If the overnight operation against Iran effectively were to reduce managed money gross shorts from 187k lots to 0, then the price move could have been ~$14/bbl,' Citi analysts said in a recent note, adding, 'we do not expect a further short-covering rally in meaningful size.' Brent crude spiked to an intraday high of $78.5/bbl before settling at following Israel's military strikes, but Citi sees energy flow disruptions as likely limited, and doubts prices will stay elevated for long. 'Heightened geopolitical tensions may well remain, but we don't expect energy prices to stay elevated for a sustained period of time,' the analysts said. On the ground, Israel's military said its attack on an Iranian nuclear facility near Isfahan dismantled infrastructure used to reconvert enriched uranium—a key step in the nuclear weapons production process. The Israel Defense Forces said Israeli fighter jets 'completed a strike on the Iranian regime's nuclear site' near Isfahan, about 350 kilometers southeast of Tehran, destroying facilities for producing metallic uranium, reconversion infrastructure, and laboratories. The escalation followed Iran's barrage of missiles and rockets after Israel's earlier strikes on targets inside the Islamic Republic. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran had crossed 'red lines' by targeting civilian areas in its missile strikes, vowing that Israel would 'continue to defend the citizens of Israel and ensure that the Ayatollah regime pays a very heavy price for its heinous actions.' The escalating tensions aren't expecting to keep oil prices on a continued surge, Citi says, attributing managed money positioning as key driver of the rally as short sellers were squeezed. "Fresh longs would then need to lift prices further,' Citi added, signaling that additional upside would require a material escalation—such as direct attacks on energy infrastructure or a broader regional conflict. "The market is closely monitoring further Iranian and Israeli responses and whether military actions might involve energy infrastructure in the future,' Citi said Related articles Oil in biggest gain since 2022 as Israel hits Iran, but Citi warns gains may fade Precious metals rally is broadening as silver and platinum close the gap to gold India reportedly suspending rare earth exports to Japan amid domestic needs Error while retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data
