Lokman: Hishammuddin must seek forgiveness himself, show remorse to rejoin Umno
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam has reportedly said that Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein personally appeal and show that he sincerely regrets his actions if he wants to return to the party.
According to Malaysiakini, Lokman said yesterday that the Umno leadership has not received any formal request from Hishammuddin, a former Umno vice-president, since his suspension in January 2023.
'I've never heard of the individual himself (Hishammuddin) appealing. What I know is that he doesn't want to appeal,' he was quoted as saying.
'(Therefore) to me, this issue doesn't need to be discussed (because) if the individual himself isn't interested, it's highly unlikely that the supreme council will discuss it in a meeting,' he reportedly added.
Lokman, who reportedly said he had appealed eight times after being expelled from Umno in 2018, added that the party needs to see clear signs of Hishammuddin's remorse and loyalty.
'He should also demonstrate loyalty to the party. The Umno supreme council needs to be convinced that he is truly with the party and not with Perikatan Nasional,' Lokman reportedly said.
Hishammuddin, who is the MP for Sembrong and a former defence minister, was suspended from Umno for six years alongside several other leaders. The party did not disclose the reasons for their suspension.
Last Saturday, the Sembrong Umno division again called for Hishammuddin's suspension to be lifted.
This was reportedly the second time in two years the division had passed such a motion.

Anwar says KL's future is public transport, not private cars, as 2040 blueprint unveiled
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said public transport will serve as the backbone of future development in Malaysia's capital under the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL40). He said new infrastructure projects under the Transport Ministry, including the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), have been identified to support this shift. 'In this local plan, the city hall's priority is not private vehicles, but public transport. We make decisions in favour of the majority,' he said during his speech at the PTKL40 launch, held at Institut Latihan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) in Cheras here. 'That's why I said new projects identified under the Transport Ministry, such as the MRT and others, are meant to form the backbone of the city, ensuring comfort for everyone.' Adding to Anwar's remarks, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the plan aims for 70 per cent public transport usage by 2040, supported by the Traffic Master Plan and pedestrian and cycling routes. 'Initiatives such as micromobility and covered green pathways are direct examples of how this plan is being translated into action,' she said in her speech. Maimunah added that DBKL is also developing the Urban Digital Twin Kuala Lumpur, which will enable real-time updates of development data. 'This will ensure that our policies and actions are based on facts, not perceptions, a practice that reflects the values of accountability and integrity, and marks a reform in governance at DBKL,' she added. Meanwhile, Anwar also highlighted that all new housing developments must include solar power as part of their design under PTKL40. 'These are new requirements that have not existed in our regulations or laws before. This will ensure the sustainability of the city,' he added. PTKL40 was gazetted in May this year and came into force on June 11. The plan incorporates 12 development principles, including site suitability, basic amenities, utility networks, and environmental harmony, to ensure that new developments do not burden existing systems but instead strengthen them. Maimunah said the plan also identifies reserved areas for future facilities and introduces concepts such as stratified, mixed-use, and integrated development. 'We do not want Kuala Lumpur to be merely a dense city, but one that is friendly and human-centric, another core principle within the Malaysia Madani framework,' she said. PTKL2040 also sets a minimum target of 20 square metres of open space per city resident, equivalent to over 4,700 hectares. To promote a healthy and active lifestyle, community parks are set to be linked through a 254-kilometre Green Connector network. The plan also targets the development of 305,000 affordable housing units by 2040. Building height controls are being introduced to preserve the character of low-intensity areas. A total of 139 areas have been identified as having redevelopment potential, with a focus on ageing public housing estates.

Home minister calls for stronger Asean cooperation to tackle rising cybercrime threats
PUTRAJAYA, June 24 — The rising threats of cybercrime, ranging from financial scams to ransomware attacks, highlight the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated cooperation among Asean member states, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin Nasution said these crimes have emerged as a serious and pressing challenge in today's digital age. 'It clearly shows us that this is not just a future problem; it is a pressing issue right now. Our digital defences must evolve as fast as technology does. 'This means we must adopt new technologies, including the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), to significantly improve how we detect, prevent and enforce laws against these crimes,' he said when opening the 25th Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crimes (SOMTC) and Its Related Meetings here today. However, Saifuddin Nasution noted that technology alone is not enough, stressing that the true strength of the collective response lies in trust, information-sharing and building each other's capabilities even as new tools are embraced. He called on Asean member states to strengthen collaboration through platforms such as the SOMTC to ensure regional efforts keep pace with fast-evolving cyber threats. Malaysia, he said, remains committed to working closely with Asean partners to safeguard the region's digital landscape. 'This is crucial for our shared goals of peace, safety and stability in the region. We believe this is not just something we should do; it's something we must do,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution emphasised that in today's increasingly fragmented global environment, international cooperation remains the cornerstone of regional stability. He said such cooperation is not only vital in addressing shared security threats but also in preserving economic resilience and maintaining public trust in institutions. 'We believe that not choosing sides is not a sign of passivity. It is, in fact, a strategic approach that protects our collective credibility, preserves our sovereignty and strengthens our unity. 'Asean's strength has always stemmed from its unity and inclusivity in diversity,' he said. He added that Asean must now ensure its commitment to consensus is matched by a readiness to act decisively in the face of evolving challenges. 'What we need is not only alignment but also courage to confront new and hybrid threats, courage to reform outdated mechanisms, courage to make bold policy decisions in the interest of our people's safety and dignity,' he said. He also recalled Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's remarks at the opening of the 46th Asean Summit last month urging member states to be both practical and principled, to look ahead with optimism and to act with firm determination in navigating regional and global challenges. Regarding SOMTC, Saifuddin Nasution described it as more than just a routine gathering but a strong reflection of Asean's collective commitment to combating transnational crime. He said the meeting plays an important role in strengthening regional cooperation, enhancing enforcement efforts and encouraging the exchange of best practices in addressing crimes that cross national borders. — Bernama
