Firms of Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore team up to advance cross-border renewable energy supply

Malaysia Sun27-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Xinhua) -- In a move for regional energy cooperation, leading energy companies from Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam have signed a joint development agreement to explore the export of renewable electricity from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore.
This strategic partnership highlights the growing commitment among industry leaders to advance regional power integration and accelerate decarbonization through commercially viable solutions, the firms said in a statement.
Through this agreement, Malaysia, as represented by MY Energy Consortium, an unincorporated consortium established by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), will collaborate with a consortium comprising PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), a member of Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group (Petrovietnam) of Vietnam, and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp).
Together, the consortia will focus on unlocking Vietnam's rich renewable energy resources, particularly offshore wind power, as a source for green electron generation and to supply clean electricity across borders.
This alliance reflects the growing momentum towards a regionally integrated ASEAN Power Grid.
"Malaysia's participation in this initiative reflects our strong commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid vision, which aims to strengthen regional energy security through the creation of a power transit hub," said members of MY Energy Consortium Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, also president/chief executive officer of TNB, and Muhammad Taufik, president and group chief executive officer of Petronas.
According to them, this tripartite partnership is a step forward in advancing transnational green infrastructure, tapping into Vietnam's renewable energy potential, and delivering stable, low-carbon electricity to communities and businesses.
Meanwhile, Tran Ho Bac, president and chief executive officer of PTSC, said this agreement highlights the role of PTSC in particular, and PVN as a whole, in advancing national energy transition strategies.
Wong Kim Yin, group president and chief executive officer of Sembcorp Industries, said this agreement highlights Singapore's strategic role as a demand center and a key enabler of cross-border power imports to support its decarbonization goals.
According to the statement, this agreement endeavors to open pathways for a scalable model of cross-border renewable energy cooperation in Southeast Asia, which would position the region as a global leader in collaborative decarbonization and energy transition.
The formal agreement exchange ceremony between MY Energy Consortium, PTSC and Sembcorp was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday.

Stablecoin firm Circle scales record high after blockbuster NYSE listing

Jeremy Allaire, CEO and co-founder of Circle Internet Group, the issuer of one of the world's biggest stablecoins, reacts to the price of first trade, on the day of the company's IPO, at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), in New York City, U.S., June 5, 2025. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -Stablecoin issuer Circle Internet's shares climbed 41% to hit a record high on Friday, extending a stellar run after a blowout market debut on the New York Stock Exchange a day earlier. The New York-based company's stock touched as much as $117.45, more than triple its offer price of $31 and valuing the company at $30.5 billion on a fully diluted basis. The blockbuster listing also reinforced expectations that the IPO market was regaining its momentum after being stifled by tariff-driven volatility. "This is big enough that it extends beyond crypto," said Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital, a provider of IPO-focused research and ETFs. Wall Street executives also struck an optimistic tone on Thursday at an industry conference, emphasizing that markets were ready for the right companies. NYSE President Lynn Martin said Circle's IPO was a bellwether for the IPO market this year and not just for crypto listings. Investors are also realizing that the uncertain environment is going to be relatively persistent and focusing on putting their dollars at work, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman said. "This is the latest sign of building momentum in the IPO market. We'll likely continue to see moderate activity over the next month, but there is still some tariff uncertainty on the horizon, which is why we're expecting more of a full IPO rebound in the fall," Kennedy said. Digital banking startup Chime is poised to go public in New York next week. Sixth Street-backed cancer diagnostic firm Caris Life Sciences, private equity-backed debt buyer Jefferson Capital and Florida-based Slide Insurance have also joined the IPO pipeline in recent weeks. FuelCell Energy lays off 22pct of staff as part of restructuring plan

NEW YORK: Renewable power company FuelCell Energy said on Friday it had laid off 22 per cent of its workforce, as part of a global restructuring plan to reduce its operating expenses by 30 per cent from a year earlier. Shares of the Danbury, Connecticut-based company rose 5.6 per cent in premarket trading following the announcement. High interest rates and policy uncertainties around capital-intensive clean energy projects have forced many renewable energy firms to reevaluate their expansion plans. FuelCell said the new plan, focused on its operations in the US, Canada and Germany, follows a global operational restructuring in November that included reducing its workforce by nearly 13 per cent and cutting operating expenses by 15 per cent for 2025. The company said the plan is to protect its position "amid slower-than-expected market investments in clean energy." "Our priorities remain clear: reduce our discretionary spending, decrease our cash burn, and accelerate our trajectory toward our ultimate goal of sustained, positive adjusted EBITDA." CFO Michael Bishop said. The company reported adjusted core loss of US$19.3 million for the quarter ended April 30, higher than Wall Street expectations of US$16.1 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. As part of the restructuring plan, the company, among other methods, also plans to amend the production schedule for one of its manufacturing facilities to align with contracted demand rather than forecasted demand. The company said it has a total of about 426 employees worldwide following the latest reduction in workforce.
