SGEI and Singa plan subsea electricity link from Indonesia to Singapore

Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI) and Singa Renewables, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RGE, have formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint development of a subsea electricity interconnector between Singapore and Indonesia. The collaboration aims to enhance regional energy integration and the growth of renewable energy within the ASEAN region. The MoU was presented in the presence of government officials from Singapore and France during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Singapore. TotalEnergies Renewables APAC head of business development Gregory Thomassin stated: 'We welcome SGEI to the Singa project, enhancing the resilience and viability of the interconnector and the entire project. Our combined expertise will improve energy access and security for Indonesia and Singapore, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy future.' The agreement outlines the joint effort in planning, financing, constructing and maintaining the interconnector assets for low-carbon electricity imports to Singapore from Indonesia. The interconnector project is central to Singapore's aim of importing up to six gigawatts (GW) of low-carbon electricity by 2035. SGEI CEO Ong Teng Koon stated: 'SGEI is pleased to partner with Singa and bring together our complementary strengths to develop an interconnector between Singapore and Indonesia. 'The interconnector project will play a crucial role in enabling clean energy imports into Singapore while contributing to win-win outcomes for Indonesia and Singapore.' The initiative also bolsters the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) vision, which seeks to interlink the power systems of member states, fostering cross-border electricity trade and improving energy access across the region. RGE global head of renewable energy William Goh stated: 'In partnering with Singapore Energy Interconnections, we look forward to advancing the development of critical infrastructure to deliver reliable, low-carbon energy to Singapore and enable a greener and more connected energy future for the region.' The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has granted Singa Renewables a conditional licence to import 1GW of renewable energy from Indonesia. This follows a co-investment agreement between the companies to develop a hybrid renewable power plant in Indonesia's Riau Province. The planned power plant will supply clean energy to Singapore and to industrial areas near the solar site in Indonesia. Sarawak steps up role in ASEAN Power Grid, expands RE vision

OSAKA: Sarawak is stepping up a plan to integrate Borneo into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), underlining its commitment to regional energy cooperation, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said Sarawak has been supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is currently in the process of supplying power to Brunei. 'We will play our part to contribute to the APG. Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond,' he said after the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, today. Besides renewable energy (RE), Awang Tengah said Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, oil and gas (O&G), petrochemical products, and aerospace. These developments complement the sustainable O&G sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities, leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, he said. 'Sarawak is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity,' said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is going to be the hub for RE, anchored in hydropower as it has the potential to generate at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) or 30 gigawatts (GW), if fully developed. Currently, Sarawak is targeting an increase in its generating capacity to 10,000 MW or 10 GW by 2030, and to 15,000 MW or 15 GW by 2035. 'Apart from hydropower potential, there is also huge potential for us to develop this RE through solar power and bio-energy from biomass and waste,' he explained. Awang Tengah also revealed that Sarawak will be hosting Sarawak Week with the theme 'Sustainability for Tomorrow' at the Malaysia Pavilion for the World Expo Osaka from August 4-10. The Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka spans 2,654.52 square meters across three floors, reflecting the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. With the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. The pavilion also serves as a hub for international collaboration and dialogue, as well as pocket talks, product launches, memorandum of understanding signings and business matching sessions. It will also host forums, summits, and networking events that would position Malaysia as a dynamic global partner.

The MOU establishes a framework for strategic collaboration between Sarawak Energy and JBIC to advance renewable energy initiatives and enhance regional interconnectivity. 'Sarawak is stepping up its plan to deeply integrate Borneo into the ASEAN power grid,' Awang Tengah commented during a press conference after the MOU signing. 'Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond. 'Besides renewable energy, Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), oil and gas, petrochemical products, and aerospace. 'These developments complement the sustainable oil and gas sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities with advanced technologies and sustainable practices.' The Sarawak Deputy Premier said this is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity. 'Today's signing of an agreement between Sarawak Energy and the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation will partly enhance our collaboration. 'In this respect, I would like to invite more Japanese companies to invest and participate in Sarawak's economic development agenda.' Aligned with the ASEAN Power Grid initiative and the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), the partnership contributes meaningfully to long-term sustainability and strengthens regional cooperation. Both organisations will engage in ongoing dialogue and explore joint opportunities that support Sarawak Energy's long-term growth strategy and Southeast Asia's broader decarbonisation efforts. The MOU signing was coordinated with the support of the federal Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, and Sarawak's Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, through the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak.
