Picklum through to quarter-finals in El Salvador
The 22-year-old Australian won 12.57 to 11.53 in inconsistent conditions at Punta Roca on Saturday.
"It was definitely not easy," said Picklum.
"All these wildcards are deadly. They've done some damage already.
"Obviously, she's a really good surfer and competitor as well. For me, I try and settle down.
"It's not a rush, 35 minutes. I was stoked they added five minutes on so I could wait and be certain on a couple of waves I'm taking off on.
"Trying to make decisions and take off on waves that make me excited and then just finish them."
With an onshore wind picking up, the competition was called off for the day before the other two remaining Australians, Isabella Nicholls and two-time world champion Tyler Wright, got to contest their round-of-16 heats.
Earlier in the day, current world No.1 Caity Simmers, advanced to her fourth straight quarter-final of the year with a 12.67-11.67 win over 2024 world junior champion Luana Silva from Brazil.
"I was just doing some high lines and having some fun," Simmers said.
"It's been a really great time. Just hanging out with your friends and it's the best thing ever."

What do the Nets have in former UNC forward Drake Powell?
NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets selected forward Drake Powell out of the University of North Carolina with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft about two months ago. Brooklyn made five first-round picks in the Draft and Powell is one of the players that could present a different skill set from the rest of the class. Powell is ready for the change in role. "I feel like my defense, that's mainly just pride. That's just something that I've had since growing up at a young age playing with my older brother, older cousin," Powell said during the press conference that the Nets put on with the rookies following the Draft. Coming into the Draft, Powell was regarded as the prototypical 3-and-D wing who has the potential to add more to his game due to how he played in high school. "He didn't put up flashy numbers as a freshman, but he showed glimpses of his potential on both ends," Bleacher Report's NBA staff wrote in its scouting report of Powell. "His frame, motor and willingness to compete give him a strong foundation to build on. Of course, Powell's game is still raw, especially on offense. He will need time to polish his handle, shot and feel, particularly in the half court." Powell, 19, is coming off a 2024-25 college basketball season at North Carolina in which he averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point land. Despite heading into his freshman season as a 2024 McDonald's All-American, Powell was asked to play a supporting role to RJ Davis and Ian Jackson. Powell will be entering a 2025-26 season in which he will have to compete with the likes of Michael Porter Jr., Ziaire Williams, and Terance Mann for playing time at the small forward position for the Nets. Brooklyn finished the 2024-25 season 20th in defensive rating (115.8) so if Powell can bring their defensive ability to the floor early on, he may be able to play enough to show his growth on the offensive end as well.

Jets Trio Named to Team USA Olympic Camp Roster
Winnipeg Jets Connor Hellebuyck, Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk all named to Team USA's Olympic Orientation Camp Roster. As the countdown to the 2026 Winter Olympics continues, three key members of the Winnipeg Jets in Connor Hellebuyck, Kyle Connor, and Neal Pionk were all named to Team USA's Olympic Orientation Camp Roster on Tuesday. USA Hockey (@usahockey) on X Introducing the 44 players who will attend the U.S. Men's Olympic Orientation Camp 🇺🇸 Details: Hellebuyck stands at the forefront as the most notable name of the bunch as the 30-year-old goaltender is coming off a career-defining season with the Jets. Not only did he claim his second straight Vezina trophy, but he also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He posted an NHL-best 47 wins, along with eight shutouts and a 2.00 goals-against average with his dominance playing a key role in Winnipeg capturing the Presidents' Trophy with the league's best regular-season record. Internationally, Hellebuyck has been a steady contributor for Team USA. He represented the United States at the 2015 IIHF World Championship and again at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where he solidified his reputation as one of the country's top goaltenders. His elite-level consistency makes him the presumptive starter for Team USA in Milan, like he was during the Four Nations Face-Off. On the offensive end, Kyle Connor remains one of the most underrated lethal American forwards in the NHL. The 28-year-old winger led the Jets in scoring last season, notching 41 goals and 56 assists for career-high 97 points in 82 games. His speed and scoring touch has long been a part of USA Hockey with Connor previously representing the U.S. at multiple levels, including the 2014 IIHF U18 World Championships and the 2016 World Championships. Exclusive: Jets 2025-26 Complete Team Preview Released in THN Yearbook Explore 76 Years of Hockey History with THN + Get a Free Yearbook Preview The Michigan native recieved a small role on Team USA during Four Nations but following the tournament, returned to Winnipeg and proceeded to tear up the rest of the league. He could be looked at for a more meaningful role and added minutes. Neal Pionk, meanwhile, is a new name to the fold as he wasn't on Team USA for Four Nations and will look to bring his two-way presence to the American blue line. The defenseman anchored the Jets second pairing that helped the team secure the title of the league's best defence for the second consecutive season. Although his regular-season numbers weren't as flashy as his teammates', his steady play on the backend plus his experience make him invaluable. Pionk has a history with Team USA, having won gold at the 2013 World Junior A Challenge and helping the senior squad earn bronze at the 2018 IIHF World Championships. Jets' Top Defenceman Earns Place on NHL Network's Top-20 List Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey has been named to the NHL Network's annual Top-20 list. These three Jets join a stacked Team USA core that includes marquee NHL names such as Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and Dylan Larkin. With Hellebuyck anchoring the crease, Connor driving the offense, and Pionk holding the line defensively, the Jets' American core is poised to make a major impact in Milan. For Team USA, the road to gold may very well run through Winnipeg.

Cade Klubnik, Caleb Downs among early favorites for college football's top awards
The race for college football's most prestigious awards is about to begin, and proven stars and rising sophomores are early frontrunners. From Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik to Ohio State's star tandem of Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith, here are six players positioned to add their name in the history books during the 2025-26 season: Fred Biletnikoff Award: Jeremiah Smith Few young receivers have generated as much hype as Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, who comes off a dominant freshman season. Smith led the Buckeyes with 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, finishing ahead of first-round pick Emeka Egbuka. The No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class delivered for the Buckeyes throughout their national title run, connecting with quarterback Will Howard for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason. At 6-foot-4 with excellent hands and elite route running capabilities, it's hard to keep the ball out of Smith's hands. Jim Thorpe Award: Caleb Downs Two years into his collegiate career, accolades are stacking up for Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. The preseason first-team AP All-American was an immediate standout for the Buckeyes after spending his freshman season at Alabama. Downs was named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year after finishing the season with 82 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and six pass break-ups. He was critical to the championship run, consistently locking down threats in the passing and running games. He held tight end and eventual first-round draft pick Tyler Warren to four catches for 47 yards in Ohio State's 20-13 win over Penn State and picked off Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the CFP semifinal. Chuck Bednarik Award: Dylan Stewart After a breakout freshman campaign, South Carolina's Dylan Stewart is poised to lead the Gamecocks' defense in 2025. Stewart earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team after recording 23 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup. The edge rusher who can also drop into coverage put together one of the best freshman defensive campaigns in South Carolina since Jadeveon Clowney. Though Downs will likely make a strong case, the Bednarik Award has yet to be given to a safety in its 30 years of existence. Stewart is one of just seven sophomores on the watch list for the award. Doak Walker Award: Jeremiyah Love Love is widely considered the top returning running back after playing an integral role in Notre Dame's best season since 1988. The six-foot, 214-pound running back finished the season with 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries, averaging 70.3 yards per game, 8.5 yards per carry and at least one score in each of the first 13 games. As Notre Dame undergoes a quarterback shift in 2025, Love could see even more opportunities to carry the offense, putting the preseason AP All-American in prime position to take home the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back. Outland Trophy: Spencer Fano The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. earned the award in 2024, marking back-to-back Outland Trophy wins for the Longhorns after T'Vondre Sweat won in 2023. We expect the award to stay on the offensive side of the ball in 2025 and Utah's Spencer Fano is a player to watch. He led FBS offensive tackles in 2024 with a 92.7 PFF grade, allowing just two quarterback hits and one sack through 424 pass-block attempts. Fano held his opponents to zero sacks through the last 11 games of the season. The preseason AP All-American has shown versatility, lining up on the right and left sides, and seems a good bet to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Heisman Trophy: Cade Klubnik The most prestigious award in college football is likely to return to the hands of a quarterback in 2025. Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik headline early Heisman conversations and possess the best odds heading into the season. Klubnik has the experience Manning lacks, the mobility Nussmeier strives for and enough consistency in the receiving room to hit the ground running in 2025. The Clemson quarterback comes off an impressive 2024-2025 campaign, completing 63.4% of passes for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. A dual-threat, he added 463 yards and seven touchdowns on foot. His 36 touchdowns ranked behind only Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, who were both selected in the 2025 NFL draft. Clemson landed at No. 4 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. If Klubnik can measure up to high expectations, the Tigers could have their first Heisman winner since Trevor Lawrence.
